Author of the Week - Tess Gerritsen (November 27)

    Save Changes Cancel

    BACKGROUND
    From the author's website

Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.

While on maternity leave from her work as a physician, she began to write fiction. In 1987, her first novel was published. Call After Midnight, a romantic thriller, was followed by eight more romantic suspense novels. She also wrote a screenplay, “Adrift”, which aired as a 1993 CBS Movie of the Week starring Kate Jackson.

Tess’s first medical thriller, Harvest, was released in hardcover in 1996, and it marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list. Her suspense novels since then have been: Life Support (1997), Bloodstream (1998), Gravity (1999), The Surgeon (2001), The Apprentice (2002), The Sinner (2003), Body Double (2004), Vanish (2005), The Mephisto Club (2006), The Bone Garden (2007), The Keepsake (2008; UK title: Keeping the Dead), and Ice Cold (2010; UK title: The Killing Place.) Her books have been translated into 37 languages, and more than 20 million copies have been sold around the world.

Her books have been top-5 bestsellers in the United States and abroad. She has won both the Nero Wolfe Award (for Vanish) and the Rita Award (for The Surgeon). Critics around the world have praised her novels as “Pulse-pounding fun” (Philadelphia Inquirer), “Scary and brilliant” (Toronto Globe and Mail), and “Polished, riveting prose” (Chicago Tribune). Publisher Weekly has dubbed her the “medical suspense queen”.

Now retired from medicine, she writes full time. She lives in Maine.

    Additional info from Wikipedia
Tess Gerritsen was the child of a Chinese immigrant and a Chinese American seafood chef in San Diego, California. While growing up, Gerritsen often dreamt of writing her own Nancy Drew novels. Although she longed to be a writer, her family had reservations about the sustainability of a writing career, prompting Gerritsen to choose a career in medicine. In 1975, Gerritsen graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in Anthropology, intrigued by the ranges of human behavior. She went on to study medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. She received her medical degree in 1979 and started work as a physician in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Inspired by the romance novels she enjoyed reading while working as a doctor, Gerritsen’s first novels were romantic thrillers. After two unpublished 'practice novels', Call After Midnight was bought by publisher Harlequin Intrigue in 1986 and published a year later. Gerritsen continued on to write another eight romantic thrillers for Harlequin Intrigue and Harper Paperbacks.

In 2001, Gerritsen's first crime thriller, The Surgeon, was released introducing homicide detective Jane Rizzoli. Although Rizzoli was only a secondary character in The Surgeon, the character has been a central focus of a series of seven books along with medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles and the Rizzoli & Isles television series with Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander portraying the main characters respectively.

I've read The Surgeon and really liked it and the writing style but was confused because Rizzoli was indeed a secondary character. Now I know the author made a shift after the second book. Also, the character is very different from that portrayed in the series, which I understand to be true for the rest of the books.

I had no idea, until doing the research for this discussion, that Gerritsen started writing romantic suspense before shifting to this body of work. Those books are now published by Mira in the UK. I think I'll add one of the more recent works to my shelf.

I'm also going to add the next book in the Rizzoli & Isles series, The Apprentice, to my December reading plan, along with one of her medical thrillers, The Bone Garden.

Thanks to Lauren for recommending Gerritsen as our first author of the week. I learned quite a bit about Gerritsen beyond the one series.

@Lauren - Good choice of author. Tess Gerritsen is one of my favorite writers.

@Jonetta - If you liked The Surgeon I think you will love The Apprentice. It is one of the best sequels I have ever read.

The first 4 books of the R&I series are brilliant! You will be glued to the pages. The Bone Garden has been my favourite so far of her medical thrillers.

I've read the entire Rizzoli & Isles series except for the newest one The Silent Girl which I hope to read in December. I've also read all of her medical thrillers except Gravity
It is weird that Girl Missing is called a UK Crime Thriller when it takes place in Boston. I would consider it a medical thriller. The heroine is the precursor to Maura Isles.

I don't know why either, Lauren. It's how she has it categorized on her website. It may be related to how it's being distributed.

It IS related to distribution. The Kindle and paperback versions are only available on the UK site of Amazon. I could only access the audiobook version on the US site.

The Silent Girl is not bad but I feel the series is losing it's grittiness and suspense.

The first books I read by Tess Gerritsen were a couple of her Harlequin Intrigues. They were OK reads, but not keepers for me.

Years ago I picked up Harvest and was totally blown away by the plot. Certainly didn't figure everything out until the reveal at the end. Loved it. After reading Harvest, a friend recommended The Surgeon and The Apprentice. That got me hooked on the Rizzoli & Isles series. I've read the first six books in that series so far and liked them all though I didn't like The Mephisto Club as well as the rest.

My favorite Gerritsen book is Gravity. I think I like it because it has such an original plot and an original setting...the International Space Station. I didn't even think I would like the book when I first picked it up. Now it's my favorite Gerritsen book so far.

I have been reading them as they came ot,right from the 90's,and cant believe it is 10 years since The Surgeon came out!I could do with a reread to refresh my memory, because so many people are now reading the whole series, and its a bit of a blur.If I only had time...sigh...

I've never read anything by Tess Gerritsen, but one of my mom's friends bought me Ice Cold as an audiobook. It's on my "To Be Listened To" shelf. I have a few library audios that I need to listen to first.

Ice Cold is book 8 in the Rizzoli & Isles series. I think it can be read as a stand alone but you might miss out on a lot of the back story. If you have the opportunity, I recommend starting with the first book in the series The Surgeon which is simply excellent.

Same here but I can think of only one time that jguidry read book 1 first in a series since she's been a member:)

Kris, there's a pretty large group here that's a little OCD about reading books in a series in order. I admit I'm near the head of the line of that club:) Lauren may be #1!

Ha ha. I really don't usually start at number 1. I think the one time I did, it was purely by accident. Someone's gotta be the oddball, it might as well be me. ;)

@Lauren I can usually tell pretty quickly if I can follow along mid-series. If I can't then I do go back to number 1.

I just saw Amazon is offering a free download for the Kindle. It's a Rizzoli & Isles short story called Freaks.

Well, I read both The Apprentice and The Bone Garden and really liked both. I would not have read the second book without the recommendations here.
