I read The Kingdom, Book 2 in the Graveyard Queen series, by Amanda Stevens, and I re-read Hunger Games, to prepare for the movie. I enjoyed the movie !
I just finished Alias Grace, by Margaret Atwood - 4 stars
This is a fictional account of a true crime story that took place in Canada in the 1800s, just prior to the start of the American Civil War. Grace Marks was convicted of being an accessory to murder and ultimately placed in prison. I do not particularly enjoy fiction that was written in this time frame, based on the small number of books I have tried, however, this is contemporary fiction and I found it wonderfully engaging. The letters and articles written at the time, I believe are authentic, and give you both frame of reference and an authenticity that some modern fiction cannot attain on its own. I was not immediately taken with Grace, but as she launched into her life story, I was sucked in, and fully interested in how she got where she was, and how the murders took place, since the reader is faced with a question early on as to whether she is actually guilty. The book does not answer this question definitively, but poses some interesting questions. The ending was a little bit of a surprise since I did not think it would happen, but apparently, it is true to the historical facts of the case. I highly recommend the book.
