Anything Victorian: Murder, Romance, or Lace

This is the group for anything Victorian. The Victorian Era is between 1837 and 1901. Wether it's a series or stand-alone book in mysteries, romance, non-fiction, fiction or horror, if it's based in the Victorian Era then it belongs here.

    What is it about Victoriana...

...That lends itself to such creepactcular horror fiction? Even horror stories written earlier or later (like Dracula or The Phantom Of The Opera) work better when the characters are in Victorian period costumes and going through their paces onscreen by gaslight.

Good question Eileen, Ive noticed that too. Perhaps its the mystery of the era. I guess it makes it creepier precisely because of the lifestyle back then. It certainly has both extremes, utterly romantic and the ghostly horror side as well.

    And it's so, you know, dimly-lit. :)

Yes, I agree it's most about atmosphere and period detail. It's a window on another (disappeared) world- a world that is the precurser to ours historically, and yet it is different enough and far way in time enough to be exotic at the same time. Ahhhhh... flickering gaslight, rustling silk, cloak and dagger, horse drawn carriages and shadowy, winding streets!
Jack the Ripper is considered to be the first serial killer- but compare him with his contemporary counterparts, who seem mundane, sleezy and alot less mysterious, thanks to CSI, etc.
Whatever happened to the skulking poisoner?
Whatever happened to the sense of mystery? Everything these days has to be forensically analysed and explained.

Life, I admit, was more mysterious before the invention of DNA testing.

I think because there was so much stuff. Everyone worse so many layers of clothing, and there were so many things on the furniture, that it just seemed tailor made for drama!
