Anything Victorian: Murder, Romance, or Lace

This is the group for anything Victorian. The Victorian Era is between 1837 and 1901. Wether it's a series or stand-alone book in mysteries, romance, non-fiction, fiction or horror, if it's based in the Victorian Era then it belongs here.

I'm Eileen and I love all sorts of books, but especially creepy ones. For some reason, the Victorian era was an incredible source of this sort of book. So I am happy to be here!

    Hello everyone!
My favourite reading interests are: Victorian crime fiction and true-crime, steampunk and mysteries- mostly set in England and France. It all started while reading Victorian novels as a child, which instilled in me (amongst other things) a taste for button-up boots, bombazine and bustles- I'm a sucker for good costume decriptive passages! Hope others share my anachronistic interests!

Now, I have heard great things about steampunk but have never read any. Can you recommend some titles?

Hello Eileen M ! If you want a good intro to Steampunk, read "The Difference Engine" by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling - that was the book that started it all off really. Steampunk is typically set in an alternative Victorian world which derives from H.G. Wells and Jules Verne- so, as you would expect there is an element of the fantastic in all of it: secret cabals, megalomaniac villains, amazing gadgets and inventions. Fictional characters mix with historical ones. And, of course, there's lots of adventure- all done in top hats and bustles! If you've seen the film "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" , based on the eponymous graphic novel by Allan Moore you will see what I mean.
