    Becoming Who I Am...

    Save Changes Cancel

I step out of my condo complex and step into the chilling New York winds. After spending a week in San Fransisco, the icy nip of the air chills me to the bone. Although I'd forgotten to mention the fact that I'd be gone for a while, nobody really seemed to care. People are here one day, gone the next. That's just how it was for me.
My boots plod onto the concrete as I run down the sidewalk, pushing past people. Only in New York, I thought, pushing through the crowds of people. It was only six in the morning and the sidewalks were already packed.
I run down into the subway station and grab onto one of the handles. The subway doors close, and I finally have a minute to myself. I know that it wasn't right of me to just leave like I did, but after what had happened last time I was at my internship, I had to leave. Either I have to quit, or my boss does, and I know how that would turn out.
Looking out the glass windows to the next subway over, I see someone who looks just like me. Except this girl is wearing nearly all black. The girl turns and looked over at me, and we quickly broke eye contact.
I see someone come up behind the girl and wrap his arms around her. I slowly look up at the guy's face, and see my boss.
My eyes grow wide. Already? I nearly start crying as the subway doors open and the two of them walk out, arm in arm. I freeze for a few seconds before I finally manage to walk out of the subway car, just in time. I slowly follow behind them and start tearing up. As I reach up and tuck my hair behind my ear, I notice the girl does the same. What is happening?
After they pass, I walk in the opposite direction. I don't want to go to work, not after what I just saw. I decide to go back home and rest, maybe go upstairs to the ballet studio three floors above her condo. I sigh and walk back to got onto the next subway.
My phone rings, and I answer it. "Hello?" There's just rustling on the other line. "Hello, who is this?"
"It's Justan. I saw you on the subway." I gasp a little. As I listen closer to the rustling in the background, it starts to come clear as a high, throaty voice.
"Who is that?" The voice stopps.
"It doesn't matter. Aren't you coming to work?" He sounds hurt, innocent.
    I sigh. "Yes. I'm coming. But I don't think I could-"
He cut me off, his voice suddenly strong, controlling. "You can, and you will." His voice goes soft again. "I love you, Natalee."
I think of the girl on the subway. "Fine. I'll be right there." I hang up.
I know he wasn't good for me, and that he never chose me before, so why would he now? But there was always that possibility, maybe he would actually want to be with me someday. It was a stupid hope, but I can't keep from thinking about him. That girl keeps on flashing into my head, her voice running through my thoughts. What could I do about it anyways?

I sigh and walk back up the steps on to main street. It's busy, but I can't seem to hear anything. I step across the traffic-filled streets, turn corners, pass by people, all in what feels like a matter of seconds. Of course, it had been longer than that.
I walk into Rockefeller plaza and turn towards my building. I see Justan yet again, he's sitting on the edge of the flower garden, with that girl. He stands up and runs towards me.
I hear the girl scoff. I realized I had never actually seen her face until now. She had the same color eyes as me, her hair was the same color, same length. But her skin was darker than my pale complexion, she looked tan, or olive skinned maybe. She was the same, yet the exact opposite.
"Natalee. I'm so sorry. This girl, she is a new worker here. She's going to work with you, as your intern for now." He touched my cheek. "You did well, and I rewarded you for it. You've been promoted, young girl."
My eyes soften. "Really? I've been promoted? And she's just my intern?" I think about it. Why was I promoted now though? Why not before? "But what did I do to deserve this?"
He winks. "I think you know." The girl comes running up behind him.
"Justan, you haven't introduced me to my boss!" She smiles. Her voice isn't as high as I first thought. It sounds friendly, but still kind of throaty.
"I'm Natalee." I shake her hand.
She smiles. "I'm Mia." She hugs me. I back away a little.
"Nice to meet you." I start walking, she follows. "So today we're going to have to work on setting up the magazine's layout."
Justan just stands there and looks at us both, walking away. Eventually he catches up.
"So, Natalee, I'll need you to meet me in my office to discuss your promotion." I step into the elevator and press the button for the top floor.
"Alright. I'll get my stuff set up, then I'll be there immediately." Mia grabs a notebook out of her purse and writes stuff down.
"Um, so what will I do?" I look over at her.
"You can start off by making sure that all of the articles we need are on my desk. You can check the database on my computer and check them off." She writes it down.
Finally the elevator reaches the top floor. All three of us step out. "So, Mia, can you take my purse to my office, and I'll meet you there after my meeting." She takes my purse and walks towards my office. I walk with Justan to his office.
He closes the door behind us. "Natalee." He sits down. I almost sit down, but he stops me. "No, come over here. Sit with me." I look over at him. He smiles and beckons me over. I go over, and he pulls me onto his lap.
"Natalee, darling. You remember what you did to get this promotion, don't you?" I nod, nervous.
"Is that the only reason you're doing this for me?" He laughs, and puts his hand around my waist.
"Not the only reason. But I want you to be with me. To stay with me." I try to stand up, but he holds me there.
"Okay, so I'm senior editor now. And, um, I'll stay with you." He smiles and turns my head towards him. He kisses me.
"You'll need to work for this, though." I nod, and stand up.
"I will, thank you." I wanted to be with him, but this was kind of weird... why was he doing this?
"Wait, Natalee." I turn back to him. "You promised you'd stay with me."
He stands up, and kisses me. I avoid him at first, but then I let him kiss me. "What about Mia?" He chuckled. "She can wait." I gulp, and give in.

I step out of Justan's dark office a while later. I scream. "Mia!" The girl is staring at me, her eyes angry, a letter opener in her hand.
"Don't worry, Justan will be mine soon anyways." She moves towards me. I blink. The vision disappears. I take a step back, and breath.
"What just happened?" I mumble. I walk down the hall into my office. Mia is there, opening letters on my desk.
"Mia! Why are you going through my mail?" She looks up at me and smiles.
"Well, hello to you too!" She laughs. "I ran out of things to do, so I decided to open the business letters."
I look at her, confused and unsure. "Uhh, were you in the hall just a minute ago?" She stands up.
"Nope! I guess that meeting with Justan must have made you kind of tired, if you're seeing things!" She winks, then laughs.
"Oh. Well, good job with the articles. Did you set them all on the table?" She nods.
"And I finished the layout for you." I look at my desk. The articles look perfectly arranged and stacked. In the corner of my eye, Mia's face turns dark, she smirks, and glares. I turn to her again. She's smiling, once again. What is even happening to me? Am I seeing things? Is Mia right?
"Thank you, Mia. You're free for the afternoon, so if you'd like to leave, you can." She grabs her black peacoat and purse.
"Hey, Natalee?" She turns to me. "Meet me at Fresh, the new nightclub on 42nd street. I think we should get to know each other." She smiles.
I nod. "Okay, sure. I'll be there around eight. But nobody knows, right? It's kind of a rule, don't hang out with your interns."
She shrugs and laughs. "Um, okay! Later."
I collapse into my chair once she's gone. This day has been so weird, I don't even know what to think of it. I flip through the layout she's set. It's perfect. I decide to scan it into the computer so I can finish a day early. And maybe even spend more time with Justan...
I carry my articles to the scanner and send them through. After I finish, I decide to go back to my office. Mia is there again, sitting in my chair. I gasp. "What do you want?"
She smirked. "I want you to leave. This is my place in the company, and I think even you are figuring that out." I grab my purse and close the door, locking it.
That girl... what is she doing? I run out of the building. I brush past Justan on my way out. "Natalee!" He grabs my wrist. "What's wrong?"
I try to shake him off, but he won't let go. "Nothing, I just realized that..." I think up a lie, "I realized that I forgot to feed my cat this morning. She must be starving. I'm sorry, I'll see you tomorrow?"
He loosened his grip a little. "Meet me tonight. At the new nightclub on 42nd street. Fresh, is it?" I nod. "Right then. I'll see you there at nine, okay, Natalee?" I nod again.
He lets me go. "Goodbye, Justan!" I wave as I run.
"Goodbye, my darling!" He slowly walks back into the building. I slow down, and look up at the window of my office. My eyes grow wide, and I gasp. Mia is standing at the window, staring, smirking, almost jeering at me. A second later, I see Justan. He kisses her, touches her leg. I close my eyes and turn away. What's happening? Why is this happening to me? I walk to the subway station as fast as I can, and try to calm my nerves.
