Young Adult Historical Fiction

This is a group for those of us who are fans of young adult historical fiction from authors like Ann Rinaldi, Carolyn Meyer, Patricia Beatty, or Kathryn Lasky. I couldn't believe there wasn't a group specific to YA historical fiction and I hope there are more people out there who are fans. If you are a fan of this type of book please feel free...more »

    Whatcha Reading in February??

    Save Changes Cancel
No YA-HF at the moment. I'm currently working on the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison but there is a book I picked up from the library Prisoners in the Palace by Michaela MacColl. It is about how Victoria became queen. I'm pretty excited about the whole thing :)

I am currently reading Awakened by PC and Kristin Cast. No HF yet, but there are a lot of YAHF on my TBR.

I have Awakened on hold. I'm a little nervous about reading it because I've heard that it is pretty terrible. I have to read it though. I figure I've stuck with the series this long I might as well know what is going to happen next. Let me know what you think of it :)

I finished it a while ago, it was okay but it was mostly just moving the plot along with a few highlights. I am now reading Juliet by Anne Fortier, All Quiet on the Western Front, Pride and Prejudice, and The Shack. Yes, I do mean all at the same time.

LOL..I completely believe you. I tend to do that as well. Can't ever seem to stay focused on one book at a time. Like right now I'm in the middle of Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare, The Darkest Passion by Gena Showalter, and For a Few Demons More by Kim Harrison. I'll flip back and forth between the three until they're done :P

Ya the only problem is that The Shack and All Quiet on the Western Front are for school.

O yick...It doesn't matter whether I've desperately wanted to read the book or not, if it is assigned for school it's almost a promise that I won't read it.

Me too, and I don't think I will like All Quiet anyway. I hate war books and that's what the entire book is about.

I have to warn you, you will feel like hurting ALL of the main characters in the House of Night series...I read all of them up until the most recent, where I gave up on it (I found a few better books...). I just finished Vivaldi's Virgins by Barbara Quick. Very good. :) I'm going to start Her Mother's Daughter by Julianne Lee, about Queen Mary Tudor. And I have to read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry for school.

I am also reading The Explosionist for fun. It's based in Scotland, during a point of rebellion and in the 1900s (early-mid, but not sure exactly what year).

@Ciarra - Yea, I don't mind war stories as long as they aren't really dry.
@Brady - I've read them all so far as well, up til this new one. I keep hoping it's going to get better so I keep reading. I reallly want to read Her Mother's Daughter!! I'm a big fan of Mary Tudor, I tend to think she got the shaft in terms of her life. Let me know what you think of it :)

@Brady- I feel like hurting the characters 99% of the time, but I keep reading hoping it will get better or at least that Nefret gets hers.
@Megan- All Quiet isn't boring, its just not my cup of tea to use a bad cleche.

I read Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith. That's the only historical fiction I have read so far.

I really liked it. It is hard to find a world war 2 novel that doesn't just talk about fighting

Very true...I imagine that's because usually it's a guy writing and they tend to focus strictly on all othe military maneuvers. Usually that doesn't really bother me but I'm also a history major and am really used to that sort of thing being involved in whatever I am reading.

Well, it was better than what I had to read before this; The Prince and Communist Manifesto are the most boring books EVER!!

And we have four more to read this semester, but I can't think of the titles off the top of my head.

My Honors World Civilizations class, we are doing this instead of using a test book. It is getting more interesting as the semester goes on though.

That does sound good. I would always much rather read a novel then attempt to read a textbook.

Me too, I don't mind reading novels that aren't in my usual genres if I don't have to read a World Civilizations text book.

I've had this on my TBR for ages. I saw the Broadway production when I was in NYC a couple of years ago but I have yet to read the book.

So..I finished Prisoners in the Palace: A Novel of Romance and Intrigue by Michaela MacColl and really enjoyed it. I haven't read much about Queen Victoria before or after she was crowned so this book was interesting to me. I will probably be searching out further reading on her.

I am now reading Threads and Flames by Esther Friesner which is about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. I'm only about 40 pages in but thus far I am enjoying the story.

I may have to look into that book. It sounds really good and out of my comfort zone for reading. I have really been diverse with my reading lately. It makes things more interesting.

Sure does. I mean I've read books from this era before but nothing on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire so I thought I'd give it a try. What are you reading right now?

Well, I am reading Animal Farm, which is an allegory about the Russian revolution I think. I am still reading Juliet and Pride and Prejudice and began reading Antigone for English class.
