My name is Bridget. I married my high school sweetheart and I am now a SAHM of two rambunctious children. We also have two naughty pugs and three persnickety felines. Together, they do not give me a lot of time to read during the day. I can often be found from 9PM - 2AM with my e-reader. I love my e-reader because it can house thousands of books in the same space a slim line paperback would fit on my shelf. Leaves me more room for those favorite authors you just have to have a hardback copy of.

Interesting perspective on the e-reader Bridget. I'm curious to see how people react to them in relation to holding books. I love holding a book, but as a librarian, am swaying toward offering both mediums in my libraries. I am particularly interested in the iPad. What e-reader do you have?

I am a sucker for first love tales (both true and fiction) and I find it adorable that you are married to your high school sweet heart. I liked your perspective on the e-book. Like Melissa I love the feeling of having a book in my hands but I can see where having an e-reader might add an element of convienence that physical books lack. Do you read a mixture of both types or primarily e-books?

I'm Aimee, I hale from a small community in Wyoming where bookstores aren't up to my expectations. I love reading (average a book every two days or so) and I like to write stories. I work for a Title Company where I get to read in my down time. I like to read just about everything but right now I'm stuck in the Paranormal genre.

My goodness! Alot! I won a free copy of Immortalis Carpe Noctem and it was fabulous. The author is Katie Salidas and it is her debut novel. Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter (only two books out thus far). I just finished Wings by Aprilynne Pike too. I've found tons lately and I could go on for a while!

Hello everyone!!! My name is Channon. I am a wife, mother, grandmother, and student. When I am not in school, I work at the local hospital. I have 2 years left until I graduate and become an RN. When I am not studying I am reading a book. I love to read alot. I could read up to 3 books a week but with life sometimes that is not possible. I love my Kindle, too; but just like Lucky Irish Gal said it "Leaves me more room for those favorite authors you just have to have a hardback copy of."

I have a loving husband, who has put up with me for almost 24 years and we have 4 children (3 girls, 1 boy). And they have all made us proud Grandparents of 10 children (5 boys, 5 girls).

Life can come at you from all directions and the motto that I live by is: To take each day as it comes and never get angry, to not stress, for tommarrow can always be better.

Hi everyone, I am a wife and a mother of 2 wonderful daughters, and I work part time as well in our family business.

I love to read and just started writing with much encouragement from my family.

I went with a mini notebook for reading my ebooks which I am never without and a full size lap top for home use. I originally chose to switch from books to ebooks because I ran out of room to store them. Then chose to go with the notebook because it can run any reader format and store over a 120 G of books, which I am sure I will do some day. I also can write anywhere the spirit moves me.

There's something so undeniably freeing to have so many titles in a light, slim gadget. I'll straddle the print & e-book worlds until a) I have finished all the books on my physical TBR pile and b) until every book that I covet is offered in e-format. Happy reading to you!

Hi, I work in senior level management for a large non profit organization in VA. I love to read yet don't seem to get enough time to read as I would like. Work gets in the way of pleasure sometimes. My husband gave me a Sony Reader for Christmas and I truly love using it to read. Like someone posted earlier, I love the feel and smell of books but ereaders are so easy to carry around; I have about 10 books loaded at a time and can pick any to read easily without having to carry around 10 books. Hi - I'm a librarian, love to write and a parent of three beautiful people - I'm interested in e-books for educational and/or entertainment reasons - I still read print books because everything I've read doesn't seem to suggest the alternative is all that workable, however what I have read in these introductions suggests otherwise - so am interested in finding out how well these readers cope with the harsher realities of life like can you use them on the beach or read in the bath or just throw them in the back of the car etc. as I sometimes to do, reading tending to be crammed into the day where it fits or where I steal time - and how well do they stand up to children and teenagers (and some adults) who don't tend to look after their stuff ever - and - do they break down often - and what do you do about that, how easy/expensive are they to repair etc.

I am a soon-to-be certified K-12 school teacher librarian (I graduate in a month!) and am a voracious reader of all genres of literature. I am lucky to be one of those eclectic life-long learners who likes everything from sci-fy to fantasy to romance to history to...YOU NAME IT! I have a stepdaughter heading off to college in the fall and two lovely little elementary aged children -- a little boy (who is not so little any more) and a little girl (who seems to be getting closer and closer to those pre-teen years...). So far, we are still losing teeth at a rapid rate in our household and cuddling stuffed animals. I am still number one. I'm holding onto these days as long as possible for surely they will fade!

"I'm of a fearsome mind to throw my arms around every living librarian who crosses my path, on behalf of the souls they never knew they saved."
      Barbara Kingsolver

I love my K1 but a library is still an almost sacred place for me...always feel better leaving a library than when I walked in.

    Robert,

Thank you so much for inviting me to join the group! Hi to all the other members. I'm a Masters student working on my second Masters in Liberal Arts - just finished the first yesterday with the University of Phoenix in Curriculum and Instruction. Now I'm trying to finish off the 18 credit hours in literature/writing/grammar/linguistics in order to teach at the community college level. I'm a voracious reader of anything (and as my son says - everything), but have been confining myself to my e-readers - of which I have many options. The IPad was my graduation gift to myself so I've been using B&N, Kindle, and IBooks to read old favorites, new favorites and anything (and everything) in between.

I'm Darla, a military spouse currently living in Heidelberg, Germany. The Sony e-reader is a good fit for me because I read a lot and space is getting to be an issue. The last time we moved, I had 31 boxes of books. And I left half of my books back in the U.S. Yikes. It's also great because I'm active in some online book clubs, and there have been several times when I just couldn't get a book in time to participate--it's not a problem with e-books.

I do have a book review blog, but I've been awfully lax about posting reviews of late.

I'm a librarian from Luxembourg, europe. I'm learned animation (disney style) but couldn't find an intership place so I started as librarian (I've read a lot) and know I'm totally in it :)
For now, I don't have a Ereader, but thats becoz here (lux / german/ France) EReaers are really expensive (starts by 600 Dollars) for something called "Bookeen". So I'm still waiting for some new models...
But It's hard to wait and not simple order a kindle on amazon. Last month I was a week on holiday and had like 14 books with me... that was heavy and took a lot of space. so I could really need a Ereader ;P

Hello to all! I'm Ange from Montana. I was born & raised here, but I dream of moving to New England one day and writing books for a living. Right now, to support my lifestyle and love of books, I work as an advertising consultant.

I suppose I am a fairly eclectic reader. I keep a fairly open mind. I love historical fiction, mystery, gothic, chick lit, horror, suspense, humor, classics, fantasy, drama, essays, (auto)biographies & memoirs, non-fiction, philosophy, spirituality, new age, self-help, business, media, advertising and coffee-table books.

Several friends of mine recently obtained Nooks and lured me in to the dark side! In the end, it was a fantastic Nook saleswoman at the local Barnes & Noble that made me teeter over the brink as I sat on the ledge and contemplated whether or not to take that precipitous plunge. I was of the die-hard print-lover ilk. I've had withdrawals from the smell of the ink on a freshly-printed page, the thin paper leaf between my fingers as I turn a page. I still have at least fifty paper books yet unread on my shelves. But as for the e-reader, I'm overjoyed by the immediate gratification, the portability of library (into my purse it goes and voila, I can now read everywhere!...although I'm telling myself traffic-reading is a no-no!) and the twist that it's already put into my eclectic reading life. Plus, I like to save money and the environment in small ways; here's hoping this is a step in both directions!

    Happy to e-meet you all!

Hi everyone! So happy to be here. I am currently living in Arkansas, USA but I miss the Rocky mountains so I'm hoping a move is in the near future. I am a preschool teacher working with the 18 months to 3 year old children in the Even Start program. It's literacy based program focusing on breaking the cycle of illiteracy and lack of education. I love it! It's the first time I've felt like I'm actually making a difference in the world. Also, I get to play with the little ones all day long while getting paid for it! We read every day so if anyone has any fabulous children's stories I could incorporate into my lesson plans, I would be most grateful.

I'm a voracious reader, a book every other day or so. I often get chided at work because they just can't believe I read that fast and can still absorb the text. I just can't seem to get enough information into my head. A life long learner, that's what I will always be.

Ello! I'm a recent high school graduate and my family's bookworm. All I've basically done this summer so far is read, sleep, read, eat, organize to br read list, read, go shopping for books and read. It's been very fulfilling and Today I'm proud to say that I've sorted through about 95% of my TBR list (the other 5% is what's on my shelfari shelf)

I'm still wary of ereaders (though I THINK I might get the the nook) because I love holding paper books and getting that wonderful new book smell.

I have to say, I was a little reluctant about letting go of my physical, turn-the-pages, and hope-I-don't-bend-the-cover-accidentally books for the Nook. But I love it. Particularly if you're one of those people who likes to read while drying your hair or eating or lying in bed, it's much easier to manage. And I was won over by the sheer volume of books I can store on it. Particularly the free ones.

Hi. I'm a published author and a freelance copyeditor and proofreader for authors who self-publish.

I read mysteries mostly and write romantic suspense set in warm places. My fifth novel, number three from Five Star Expressions/Cengage, will be out 07/11. It's called Pele's Tears and it's set on a flower farm on Kauai. The other two are River of Dreams (Brazil, rain forest, my only romantic adventure) and Sanctuary (Brazil, cerrados).

Three of my books, Lokelani Nights (Hawaii), River of Dreams, and The Spaniard's Cross (Cornwall, England), were put up in e-reader formats by the publisher who did the e-books. I recently put Sanctuary on Kindle and Smashwords by myself. This process was akin to herding cats. I'm okay at Smashwords but I still don't have a go from Amazon. And I love my e-reader cover, done by a fellow writer.

I'm a former library cataloguer, so I'm hardwired for DTBs, I'm afraid. But I have to say I'm tempted!

I have a husband I've been married to forever, a happily married son and d-i-l, and an elderly cat who's seeing me out of pet ownership. I'm in PA.

I'm a 53 year old seamstress in CA. I consume about 200 books a year. I read mostly Romance in Paranormal, Historical, a few contemporary and Paranormal Erotica . I also read Urban Fantasy, Si Fi, YA Paranormal. As I work 8-12 a day I listen to many audio books. I'm in a Paranormal Book ring where 10-13 books are offered each month and I usually read 3-4 of them (in paperback format).

Hi, I'm a wife (35), an (empty nest) mom (5), and an author. I love ebooks and I love eReaders. I read contemporary romance, science fiction romance and am exploring steampunk romance.

By the end of the year, I'll have nine published novels. They are a mix of humorous suspense/mystery, romantic suspense, action adventure time travel, and more recently, science fiction romance and steampunk romance/science fiction. I also have short stories in a variety of anthologies and have written three non-fiction books.

    Love talking ebooks and ereaders!

Hi. I'm David in Austin, Texas, a son of a librarian and lover of writing and books. I love gadgets and the thought of e-readers taking a load of textbooks off a poor student's back. I'm most excited about ebooks bringing animation, sound, and video into texts to take books further than what they do for us today. I don't have any of the readers out there. I'm waiting for something that really speaks to me and reading engadget and gizmodo, etc excited about flexible metal screens and multi-touch screens, etc. I'm very much concerned about freedom in technology. I won't support closed and/or controlled systems that inhibit porting to other devices, etc. Yay Android, Boo Apple. I'm definitely not into Amazon coming along and deleting a book I've already bought from them as happened with 1984. Hah. I want to write ebooks and try to push the envelope with the way they work.

Hi! I'm Kari, SAHM from California. I read quite a bit. In fact, I just finished my 100th book of the year. I started out with a Sony PRS-505 and was surprised at how much I liked it. I read 6 books at a time so it was fabulous to be able to take all 6 with me without overburdening my purse! For Valentine's Day my husband got me The Nook and I love it. I still love to collect and read the physical books, but new books I'm trying out or series I like to collect, but not necessarily house I put on my Nook. The best thing about it is that I can check out books from my local library on it! Looking forward to the discussions in this group, can't wait to see what everyone's interested in!

I'm Annie from the Netherlands, aka weaverannie, because I'm a weaver, spinner, dyer of fiber, yarn and cloth, knitter, lacemaker, and whatever else one can do in the textile world. I also love reading. Favorite genres: historical fiction and non-fiction, thrillers, psychology, languages, well - anything, actually. Each at it's time. I own a Sony e-reader and like it, especially when travelling and you want more books than you could normally carry. But I still prefer 'real' books, with letters on paper. Until now I've only read Dutch (translated, some of them) ebooks and the choice isn't too good here yet. Probably I should try out a few English titles soon.

Hi, I'm new to Shelfari but hardly new to ebooks. As an erotica writer, I've written for Ellora's Cave, Samhain, Loose-Id, and Changeling. My dear, dear friend Pat White embraced ebooks before most people knew what she was talking about and encouraged/nagged me to branch out beyond print publishers. As an old broad, I wasn't sure I could do erotica but I've written Native American historicals about survival in the Everglades, buffalo hunts, and a Blackfeet winter. Hey, I can research anything. And I do.

I wish I had more time to read but writing and life come first. Maybe because I emerse myself in fiction all day, my fav pleasure reading is nonfiction, particularly man against nature. Does anyone have a suggestion re a new release along the lines of Into The Wild?

Oh, I just published my first Kindle story acting as my own publisher. In the past my various publishers handled that but Wilderness Night http://www.amazon.com/Wilderness-Night-ebook/dp/B003X95LU4 is my baby following a too-long learning process.

What a great surprise! Now I'm able to take my books with me wherever I go. My favorite type of books to read are fiction. Hello! I'm Jennifer, a freelance writer from Chicago. Although I had initially resisted, I recently got a Kobo eReader and am extremely happy with it. That's not to say that I'll never go back to traditional books, but the portability of my Kobo means I'm reading much more--I always have it with me, so I don't miss those random reading opportunities that pop up!

    Hello everyone
I am a new Kindle owner and I love it. I will probably use it mostly when I travel. Books weigh much more. I am excited to find so much available electronically and even free. I am retired psych nurse and counselor. I am a widow with 4 kids and 9 grands. I am a feminist, I marched and picketed for years. I helped to start one of Pa's first Domestic Violence Shelters. I worked for Rape Crisis and ARC as a counselor. I worked at a women's reproductive clinic. Presently I am recovering from sad really bad health and taking art lessons. My favorite medium is acrylic painting. I have been a photographer for 30 years. I am not religious but I am a very spiritual person. I believe in the Divinity in every living thing. I travel a fair amount so I am not always around. I love gardening and cooking and live with my younger sister. Nice to meet all of you.

Hello, everyone! Like most of you, I'm an avid reader and am wild about the ebook format. My husband gave me a Sony Reader as a Christmas present a year ago and I bought an iPad in August which then really unleashed the beast from within. I'm using the Kindle, Nook and Kobo apps for most of my book purchases and recently added the Bluefire app to facilitate library ebook rentals.

Welcome to the group. Isn't the iPad great!! I have a nook and when I got the iPad I was in heaven. I was able to utilize my amazon account to purchase books as well as Borders. I've discovered a whole new world in books. I'm sure you're familiar with all of the websites that offer free books for Sony, kindle, etc. There's another site that provides free advanced reader copies that you can down load to bluefire and stanza, my favorite is netgalley.com, it's amazing. You should check it out, if you're interested.

Thanks for your comments...the netgalley tip just solved one of my dilemmas! I didn't know I could put my Sony Reader library on Bluefire. I am now complete:). Yes, I absolutely love my iPad.

Question re netgalley.com: I registered as a reader but it seems as if they're looking for a company association. Is this correct?

    Hello,
I'm new to the site and found that this group sounded interesting. I'm an avid reader of fiction, non-ficiton, cereal boxes or whatever. I have a Sony 505 reader that I purchased a few years back (before the prices of readers began to tumble). Now I rarely have a paper book in hand. ebooks are just too convenient....and the variable type size is a big plus.

I written two books, one non-fiction about accurate restoration of antique American clocks. It sells well globally, but if you're not into it you would fall sleep reading it.

The other book (now available on Amazon and B&N) is a fiction piece (sort of) about growing up in the 1950s and 60s. It mixes humor and real events of those times as seen through the eye of the children who lived through them. Check it out if you want a peek at baby-boomers as children. Title: Cheese Grits, Stories to Nourish the Southern Soul.

I'll keep an eye on the discussions here and contribute when I can.

I plan to move on to The University of North Florida after that and get my BA in English. I love to read, and I have way more books than I can possible read anytime soon plus twice as many on my wishlist! I try to go for 40-50 books a year but if I had the time I would read so many more! I bought a Nook about a year ago and it is a life saver! My little apartment couldn't fit my books and sometimes I will put off reading a book just because it was heavy or wouldn't fit in my purse. So now I don't have to worry about that. I love my ereader!

Hello, I'm Ariel (no, I wasn't named after the Disney character). I'm 24 years old and live in a small Texas city where my "real" book purchases were limited to Books-A-Million and Hastings. My boyfriend got me a Nook for Christmas, and I'm surprised at the amount of time it took me to abandon "real" books and replace them with ebooks; it was pretty much instantaneous...it's also why I still haven't finished A Tale of Two Cities.

My mother taught English for years, and both she and my dad read a lot. I inherited a love of books from them, and now I read whenever I have time. (Which isn't as often as I'd like, between my job at the hospital and my boyfriend and sleep--which I find highly inconvenient.)

While I do miss turning pages and smelling the paper of a book, I've managed to get over it and learn to love my Nook. Of course, it helps that the classics (which I love reading) can be found for free and that my choices are not limited to what I can find in bookstores here. I am willing to read books from pretty much any genre, be they for children or adults. I do prefer fiction to nonfiction though.

Currently in the mood for reading sci-fi/fantasy... Any suggestions? I'm a huge fan of Tolkien and I'm enjoying the Septimus Heap series (or at least what I've read of it). I'm kind of thinking I'm wanting to read something rather magical or witchy. Thought about The Wheel of Time, but that's a little bit too much of a project for right now. And you can suggest....NOW!......

Green Rider by Kristen Britain is pretty popular and not as long as WOT. Also, I like Elizabeth Haydon's books but neither of these series are very...witchy? Maybe Green Rider, more so than Elizabeth Haydon (Symphony of Ages books) but not really. Green Rider does have magic though and it's very interesting. Hmm. It seems as if I am rambling and probably not making much sense.

Hello all! My name is Keair Snyder and I recently became a Kindle Author. My book, Castles Made of Sand, is here on Shelfari along with all of its information and the link to purchase it. The ironic thing about me becoming an author of an e-book is that it was the last move I ever expected to make. I love my physical books very much and I almost feared the e-book revolution because I can't imagine a world where books were not available in a physical form. However, since I published with Kindle I have been trying to keep a more open mind on the subject and after reading some chapter previews of some e-books I am considering downloading the free Kindle app for my PC. Who knows? Perhaps I will learn to love e-books as well. I will say that the great deals you can sometimes find on an e-book makes it very appealing for me. Anytime I can get a great deal on a delightful book, I am happy. For now I am an e-book writer, I am dabbling in e-book reading, and I am thrilled to be a part of this group. :)

Professionally, I have been involved in software development for nearly 30 years, and so had an early keen interest in e-books, and I am now a very proud owner of an iPad, on which I have read dozens of books so far.

These threads have come together in my life and now I am re-publishing in e-book format a collection of my SF stories, and two gothic novels for early teens, through Smashwords ( http://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/drgrigg ) and now Amazon's Kindle Store ( http://www.amazon.com/David-Grigg/e/B0053A9QIY ) .

    Hi everyone,

I use a Kindle 3G for my ereading and i'm not going to lie, I haven't bought a single book on it. The downloading sites I use most are "freebookspot" and isohunt. In my opinion any reading is good reading, pirated or not.
As much as I love my ereader I do still love buying artsy/photography books, those are something that will never be replicated on an eReader as far as i'm concerned.

I like a wide range of books mostly historical/historical fiction or fantasy based but anything with a good storyline suits me :)

    HI Everyone,

My name is Elizabeth Dunne and I am both a reader ( a lot- various) and writer. I've just published my dark humor novel "Wage$lave" to Kindle. http://www.amazon.com/WAGE-LAVE-ebook/dp/B005IGX7GU. I've worked as a lawyer for nearly ten years, and live in Dublin, Ireland. The book is a bawdy almost Chaucer-esque look at pre-economic bust Celtic Tiger Ireland. It's partially offensive, and really only for the morally flexible. So I'm concerned *only slightly* that it may disturb some people. This is by far the friendliest and most professional of online communities for e-authors that I have seen. As if that should bother me, but in truth, nasty should be confined to fiction.

    Nice to meet,

I write near-the-knuckle dark thrillers, crime thrillers (a new character is Mike Delaney - ex assassin, ex hit man and ex monk) , YA fantasy and children's books - oh, and a bit of non-fiction.

Titles on this site are: 'The Immortality Plot'; 'Knife Edge'; 'Bodyswitch'; 'Kingdom Of The Nanosaurs'; 'An Angel On My Shoulder'; ''The Weather Kids and the Rainbow Superhighway' and 'The 10-Minute Miracle'.

I have been a musician and played with Elton John, Rod Stewart and Billy Connolly. You can check out my books and my music on http://www.davidcallinan.com.

I am looking for help researching a new thriller. I am collecting 'unforgettable' memories. Details on my website.

I have been battling with this site so much I have not played a full part yet. Note I have had to resort to putting my own 'Author' artwork on my photo, cannot sync to amazon or change my email. Not to worry, it'll get sorted.

How does an author go about getting reviews on this site and maybe getting books up onto shelves?

      Hi Dave,

As an author I found the best way to get my books to readers is to offer them in a giveaway on Goodreads.com. You can choose how many books you wish to give away and Goodreads does the rest. The great thing about this giveaway is the exposure you gain, but if it works the way it is supposed to, you should also receive reviews from those readers as well. Hope this helps.

Hi everyone and thanks for the welcome. I'm new and already love Shelfari! I published 5 books on Amazon and Kindle and am loving it. Reviews are fun and I'm meeting interesting people and learning a lot. Here is the short on my best work, selling for 3.99 with Kindle, but free for whoever asks, as long as they add tags and leave a review!

Sequel To Roll Call: Upon Release from Pelican Bay Prison, B.J struggles not to look back at the Criminal Justice System that tried to kill him. Inspired to help prisoners turn their lives around through art, he tries to work for the church. Running into judgment, the church doesn't tell the shelter he lives at he was volunteering his time helping orphans and B.J is on the run again. Add a beautiful ballerina, a good cop squeezed out of the loop by overzealous detectives, a prison protest to help the voiceless, and the temptation to do a massive drug run from Mexico, and you have the perfect recipe for a Spiritual revolution, where compassion is missing, all leaving the reader wondering; who are the real criminals?

Hi! I'm a published author with three books with a traditional publisher (Kregel Pub). However, I have decided to quit the traditional publishing and start self-publishing. I just self-published the Second Edition of The Mormon Missionaries in soft cover, but plan on putting it on POD. I also have articles that I want to have as E-books. By the way, would someone tell me how to view a member's profile? I acquired one follower, but when I clicked on the person's name to learn about them, it didn't tell me anything about her--just the books she has in her library. Thanks!

However, my husband got me a Kindle Touch for Christmas this year and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! Katherine, You really have to start taking part in the social media. It can be time-consuming, but eventually you'll learn how to organize your time. You need to join Facebook. You can start with just a Profile page, but as an author, you also need to have a Fan Page as well. There are some U-tube videos on how to do it. There, on FB, you can start accumulating "friends" and write on your "Wall" about your book and give its URL, and suggest everyone check it out. You also need to join Twitter and do the same thing. (You need to tweet at least once every day). You are only allowed about 126 characters, so you need to learn how to make it really short. Also, join LinkedIn, and do the same. Search for "Groups" that write in your same genre, or just plain writing groups, and start mentioning your book there as well. If you can manage to make your invitations not sound like a "sell," you'll do well. Also, start a blog. Everyone recommends WordPress, but it was too complicated for me, so I chose blogger.com. Much easier.

I also forgot to mention that when you set up your Facebook Fan Page, or a blogsite and you have the pictures of the cover of your book, you need to hyperlink it to where they can buy it. A PayPal Buy Now button is effective.

Nice to type to you! I recently stumbled across a great book on promoting via social media by Kristen Lamb. There are two books, One is We Are Not Alone (if you search on that and her name, it will come up) and one about blog writing. Some of the stuff is outdated, but the techniques are valid for any kind of social media. Some of the info in We Are Not Alone is in the blogging book.

      Hi Janis,

This is a learn as you go experience for me and others I am collaborating with. Each layout is so personal, it is almost like co-painting or co-sculpting. The good folks at Apple (iBook Author), Mobi and Calibre have taken care of the software end so it is literally drag and drop. However, the creative end is the more involved end. Also, the market is still evolving as to what readers want in interactive media. Most want want the software readers currently provide (Kindle example) if one can propose that sales are a useful indicator.

What we are currently looking at is replicating the book group interaction. Right now we have a book group linked at San Francisco, Munich, London and Tokyo, and have recently added Helsinki. This approach provides a means of authors simulcasting creation, post editing and distribution including concurrent language translation.

      Cheers, Michael

Hi, Janis - I've got 6 books on Kindle now. I've uploaded them all myself and I am not . . . well, let's just say I'm pretty technologically challenged.

The first five I did by following the instructions on a website called "CJ's Easy as Pie", which gives you detailed step-by-step instructions for formatting and tells you to load your properly formatted manuscript into a free application called Mobipocket Creator and from there onto Kindle.

But when I loaded this last one I discovered that you don't need Mobipocket Creator - if your ms is in Word and you've followed the formatting instructions according to CJ's Easy as Pie, you can load it directly onto Kindle!

      I hope this helps.

    Hi,
I'm new here and also new to the world of Indie e-publishing. I just finished my second cartoon e-book, the sequel to my first titled "More Cartoons That Will Send Me Straight To Hell". Don't let the title scare you, it's a bunch of fun, edgy and whacky cartoons that folks seem to get a real kick from.

I took online courses after my first book to learn how to properly create and style my books using InDesign and a couple of other apps and export them to the epub format and then do a conversion for the Kindle mobi format. I applied and received accounts to directly deliver content to the iBookstore and to Amazon. I also gained an account with Lightening Source POD printers for hard copy versions of my own and clients books.

I have dreamed of being a self published author ever since my career started and the e-revolution has made the dream come true. Independent publishing is now a reality virtually making every author with a little effort his own publisher, distributor and marketer in the fastest growing field of publishing since paper was invented.

Any other Indie publishers out there? Let's talk!

My name is Glenn Snyder, and I published my first novel, One Moment in Time, last year as an ebook.

One Moment in Time is a story about how one person can change the world...

On a stormy November evening, Jack Barrett had plans to treat his best friend Travis to a night of fine dining and jazz. As they neared their destination, a truck ran a red light, plowing through Jack’s car, and changing his life forever. Jack found a new outlook on life, and took on adventures that made him one of the world’s most admired people. With each step, Jack grew as a person and a leader; piecing together a family from different corners of the world, while risking himself and his family to save others. Jack’s impact on the world was like no other, but in the end, when the lights and the cameras were gone, Jack was about to die, or was he? Prepare yourself for a surprising ending that questions the very nature between life and death, reality and dream.

One Moment in Time is available in all ebook formats for $2.99 at www.OneMomentInTimeNovel.com or any major ebook website.

    Hello Everyone!
I am Jennifer Strong and I published my ebook, Hidden Jewel, on Amazon about a week and a half ago. The first in the Heartfire Series, my Not-So-Fairy-Tale fits very well in the fantasy/romance genre. The story of Ailill~ Princess of the Realm of Faerie, Hidden Jewel involves elements of Celtic Mythology, Druidism, Magick, Scottish history, a bit of Gaelic, time travel and, perhaps best of all, Tall Sexy Men in Kilts! Haha! Or, if you're a guy who doesn't mind reading a "chick book"{g}, Ailill is a tiny, fiery beauty who knows well what not to wear under her own mini kilt! A warrior in the making, she is bold and sure, until she learns that her heart must be divided to save her Tribe.

Here is a link to my blog: http://chroniceltic.tumblr.com

Or you can just go to Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Jennifer-Strong/e/B008BTXT46/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1
I welcome reviews and look forward to the challenge!

*Just a small warning~ Hidden Jewel contains some graphic scenes, both sexual and/or violent, as well as explicit language. I, personally, wouldn't advise it for anyone under 16, although Ailill believes that it might be alright for ages 14 and up. It would depend on the individual.

Hello! I am Ivy and addicted to books. I read mostly mysteries but have been known to branch off into other genre on occasion. I am currently reading Cutting Edge by Robert Walker...it is the first book in the Edge Series. When I am not reading you can find me in front of the telly crocheting up a storm.

Hi. Just shifted to reading ebooks exclusively. Now reading Salvage the Bones as Isaac barrels towards the gulf coast. On another note, Be happy to gift via Kindle a copy of my middle grade historical fiction novel to anyone interested i a review, or better yet if you know a middle grader interested in sports and adventure.

Ever since I was a young teenager I have had a pseudonym. I have always wanted to write. I started out with short opinion pieces and poetry. I tried my hand at writing a book when I was 14 but only got about five pages in before moving on to other things. I wasn't ready then, my vocabulary superseded my plot and character development abilities. With some prodding and a lot of editing help, I have begun writing a novel again. This time though, I have more experience and knowledge under my belt. Plus, I've got Google on my side. Check out my book... THE CUBE. Every time I sit down to edit, I get sucked back into the story I'm so familiar with. The action and adventure is so much fun to write and even more fun to read!

The Cube - Episode 1 - Rainy Season

I ran outside as thunder boomed to meet me. Rain streamed down in little waterfalls. Lightning cracked and the sky shook fearfully. I ran under the downcast sky and twirled. Puddles formed beneath my moving feet. Rain dripped down my nose and my hair lay wet against my head. My clothes were soaked through, but I was not cold. I was exuberant, I loved life and life loved me. I ran up and down the street, dancing to the feelings inside of me. I didn’t feel the cold or the wet raindrops splashing down around me. The puddles around me formed a pool and slowly, ever so slowly, they crept up my ankles. My dancing stopped; my shoes were too full of water for my waterlogged feet to move. All that was left was a light drizzle. The sun pushed away any remaining clouds and shone bright and true. My body moved sluggishly toward the drooping shed. I went around to the back and pulled out my kayak. I hopped in the knee-deep water and pushed my kayak forward. I jumped in and paddled toward the sun, shedding water as I glided effortlessly like a swan across the smooth surface. Around and around our little ditch I went, laughing at the hilarious picture I must have made. There I was, an emerging adult at seventeen, and I was kayaking in three feet of water, in our ditch, still soaked through.

Several hours later, I was in bed cozying up to my teddy bear, under my fluffy comforter. Freshly showered, my skin felt tingly; under my clean sheets. I turned on my back and gazed up at my ceiling. The cat’s eyes from my ceiling poster stared back at me. Four sets of eyes from my roommate’s Beatles poster, also pinged on the ceiling, fell on me. Side by side, all eyes fell on me. Jeanie made a muffled sound and rolled over in the bed next to mine. She was a pretty sound sleeper, but she had a tendency to talk in her sleep. At the Academy, where everyone kept secrets, Jeanie’s bedside habits did not do her well. As a roommate, I knew more than anyone about her. She had once talked about a crush she had on our self-defense instructor in her sleep-murmurs. She was pretty cool though, and mostly kept to herself when she was awake.

More so than Jeanie, I never told anyone my secrets. They would get me expelled. I was careful never to get too close to anyone and after three years at the Academy no one really knew who I was. I shuffled my blankets off my feet and rolled over onto my stomach. Time to sleep. I needed my sleep. Tomorrow the fourth years are going to start their training in the Cube and I wanted to be ready. In this last year, I needed to prove myself capable. It was very important for me to rise to the top of my class and the Cube was crucial to my success. If I failed now, all my hard work would be for nothing.

To get to sleep I started to tell a narrative in my mind. It always helped me to concentrate on something as benign as a story. I liked to create the same story every time but with different details. A great ravine formed in my mind. The rocks were dull and covered in a dust that swirled through the air and whipped into my eyes. I took to the skies in flight and swept up and down the drafts of wind, getting caught up in the particle clouds coating my wings in a fine layer of brown dust. I swooped up and down and found my usual spot within the rock wall, a narrow slit that formed my cave. I could have reached it easily from climbing down the wall, but would never have found it without a panoramic view from 100 feet above the narrow racing river below and 20 feet out from the rocks, suspended in the air. I raced for the crack and stopped short as soon as I was encased in the cool rocks. A slight outcropping of rock kept the raging winds out and I settled down in my favorite chair, a little droopy from all the years since I had created it and sat in it. I contemplated my surroundings: a small dingy bed that had started to sag in the middle, a wooden table that would have made any dining room proud with its elegant dark designs, and finally, a coat rack that stood in an empty corner. I never knew why I imagined a coat rack; I never had on a coat while I was flying around in my swirling ravine. I got up from the chair and ran to the edge of my little cave and jumped.

The alarm sounded exactly at 6:00 AM. Jeanie hit the snooze button and rolled over.

“Come on, girlie time to partay!” I said.

She just mumbled something unintelligible. I knew she would get up as the second snooze rang, so I let her be. I didn’t really want to talk anyway, no sense getting familiar. I still found it funny to imitate the other girls now and then with their ridiculous mannerisms and phrasings. Then again, they all came from upper class backgrounds and had nothing else to do but gossip and lay about before the Academy chose them. I, on the other hand, had better things to do.

I pulled on my requisite outfit for the Cube, like a spandex outer layer of skin. I swear they had not updated these outfits in years, and before that they had probably copied them straight out of all the old sci-fi movies with virtual reality games. Whatever. I didn’t care and they were designed to allow complete range of motion. I started my morning stretches, pulling the fabric this way and that, as I readied my throwing arm.

As I walked through the dark hallway out of the building towards the Cube; I messed with the settings on my suit. I changed the color from the school’s standard black fabric and white middle screen on the chest plate to my favorite, tie-dye. Each player was part of a four-man team and ultimately the colors would reflect that but when not actually competing; the suit could be altered to reflect any individual’s desired colors. I saw blues, reds, and a multitude of rainbow suits walking or jogging impatiently outside. This was our chance to shine. We had been training for this moment, strategy classes, psychology and human behavior, anatomy, etcetera; all designed to help us in this moment of competition. Of course, only fourth years were allowed on the Cube itself but every week we practiced on the grass fields behind the building.

The Cube loomed ahead, a large mundane structure, at least five stories tall. Large castle-sized doors were open and our trainers were standing at the entrance ready to scan our identity chips. I held out my wrist and the machine beeped in recognition. The first time I had to get scanned, I had nearly freaked out in anticipation. What if it didn’t accept me? Slowly I had gotten over my fears that I would be caught. I relaxed outwardly and continued walking through the large wooden double doors, looking up to read the motto I had heard a thousand times at the Academy, “Aim with all your ammunition and you lose your chance to succeed.” The first time I saw it; I was puzzled but back then I had never heard of the Academy before or the Cube or knew what the matches were. Simple really, the meaning: Aim with your entire round of ammunition and you would lose because you had more than one enemy. Take down one and you leave yourself defenseless from the rest. Some other student told me, “You better have accurate aim because you can’t be using the entire fireball on one and frankly you can’t even divide it into fourths either; you have to take tiny pieces. You better break off and use a marble sized ball because it’s rough out there.”

    “I don’t understand” I had replied.

He laughed and stated back, “You will.”

During my first years at the Academy, the upper classmen were never very informative. They were too busy to explain anything to the noobs like me. I had to learn the hard way. I had never played before; I didn’t come from that kind of background, no grooming for the Academy or anything. The very first field day we had, we divided into several teams of four. I was handed my fireball, my ammo: a round spherical ball. I watched as my three teammates took small pinches off to get ready. I did the same. The stuff smelled like electric clay. It felt powerful. The trainer told us to get ready. We all stuck our back feet firmly on the ground and held our small pinches in our right hands, except Jeanie, she’s left handed. She held her fireball in her right hand. Our outfits had turned purple in unison and we stood against four yellow-clad girls. They glared at us. Several blow up obstacles stood between us and them; a large cylindrical red piece, a couple rectangles and several cubes. Obstacles to the team that took the offensive but great walls of defense to the team that hung back. Looking around at the sweet and innocent smile on Jeanie’s face and the diminutive frames of the other two girls; I assumed we would be using the objects for the latter objective.

The whistle blew and I saw bits of yellow flying toward our end of the field. Our team took off as well. The two small girls leapt to the right, behind the cylinder, and Jeanie and I headed to the left. The yellow team came around the cylinder and threw their small weapons. One of the small girls on my team screamed as one of the small balls of ammo made contact. Her body froze for an instant and she looked terrified, as she slumped to the ground. Confusion hit me for a second as I looked down at the ball of ammo I held in my right hand, what did it do? I didn’t wait for long to figure it out; as the yellow team took down the other small girl and started rounding on Jeanie and I. We both looked at each other and then hopped over the rectangle in front of us. This obstacle was quite large and shielded us from view from the yellow team momentarily. The other blown up squares were nearby and Jeanie made as if to run for them but, I pushed her down and scrunched up beside her. The first yellow girl flew over the obstacle and I chucked my little ball at her but it missed. Jeanie, without missing a beat, threw hers and it contacted; down the girl came, confusion playing all over her face. The second and third yellow team members were right behind the first and Jeanie and I took both of them down as well. The fourth yellow girl had caught on and was hanging back, waiting for us to show ourselves, or perhaps she was sneaking around the far square? I couldn’t tell but it was time to move. Jeanie was a lot smaller than I; so I put her right behind me and motioned for her to use me as a shield, and take out the yellow girl when she appeared. Roaring like a madwoman the final yellow girl rounded the far square obstacle and a huge orb hit me square in the chest.

It was like being hit by a thousand fireflies from inside and as they burst out of me, I collapsed to the ground. Jeanie did not wait a moment as she rose up from behind my falling body and threw her entire fireball; as well, surprising the yellow girl, who now only had half her ammo left and didn’t have time to throw it or move as her momentum from throwing the other half at me was still carrying her straight towards the oncoming electric storm. Jeanie beamed proudly and tried to pull me up by my arm but, I was paralyzed and much too heavy for her to lift.

Suddenly, I could hear cheering, as our other classmates clapped for our victory and the show we had put on. The trainer appeared, frowning. She pressed a button and suddenly I could move again. The other players were allowed movement as well and we all started to stand up.

“Heroic but ineffective. You will now play the red team. Angela, Jade, Quinn, Ashley, You’re up.” She shouted at four of the girls sitting on the side. Their uniforms started to morph in color: a deep shade of crimson.

“You do know that you are only allowed one fireball per game and each game will last until there is only one team left. I see that you have sacrificed your entire ball Jeanie, and you have used more than half of yours Molly. You do not get any more.” With that she blew her whistle and the second game had begun. Confused over what to do without any ammo, Jeanie hung back and looked pathetic. Now we were like a three man team against the fresh, ‘blood thirsty’ scarlet team.

“Now you see what it is like to continue a fight after a victory. You will have many victories but you will also have many battles. Aim with all your ammunition and you lose your chance to succeed.” The trainer looked at Jeanie as she said this and then continued, “Learn to be accurate with smaller pieces, so that you don’t sacrifice yourself as a useful player to your team.”

That night I slumped down in bed. I was physically exhausted and my arm was starting to feel a deep and enduring tiredness that I would come to get familiar with as the physical training continued. I reached my sore right arm up to the ceiling, nearly touching the cat’s glazed eyes and sighed. It had been a straining day, pretending to know all the rules of the game while in fact learning on the spot. I had to mask any surprise and anxiety I had felt while on the field; and suppressing my emotions had drained me more than chucking smaller and smaller balls, at the opposing teams.

I started drifting off; running along the ravine, running with the rabbits, my hair whipped around my face. I was wearing one of those long and flowing white gowns, which was thin but somehow not see through. The dress curled around my legs protectively, letting go every now and again but coming back to meet my ankles every time. I laughed and ran faster, waving my arms like windmills and then suddenly taking to the air and flying up, up, up into the sky. I spun around and then stopped moving and for a second all physics stopped before I plummeted feet first; back down to the bottom of the ravine. The water rushed to meet my bare feet but I spun so my body was parallel to the river… just as my dress leaned down and dipped into the water. I took off, now aligned with the river, dragging my hem along, splashing droplets everywhere.

Hi I'm Rachel from Devon, England. I'm a single 46 year old who works as a craft designer and teacher; if you buy UK craft magazines you might have seen my articles. I've just started a crafting and green issues blog up at http://rachelahyde.blogspot.co.uk/ which has more information.

I love reading and favorites include craft books (of course), fantasy, historicals, romances, classics and mysteries. I particularly like historical mysteries and the American sub genre of "cozies" and read all I can find.

Until recently that meant the printed page but now I want to buy an ereader and am not sure what to get so over to all you experts for some advice. Living in the UK means the Kindle Fire is out and our library system won't lend ebooks to Kindle owners so that is limiting, I don't own a tablet so I want something with as many bells as whistles as possible. I love consoles and am a game addict so if I can do that on it as well so much the better.

I've been recommended the Nexus 7 and so far this sounds the best option but before shelling out all that money I thought I would see what you all think.

    Over to you!

Atomic Summer by Elaine D Walsh rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 27 reviewers

And its FREE Wednesday, Sept 26 and Thursday, Sept 27

About me... I am a winner of the Chairman's Award for Excellence and a little known indie author. But my latest novel is going to change that!... Ok I hope. And if my fans are correct, the movie will be coming soon.

THREE friends, TWO secrets, ONE lie, and the summer that changed their lives.

"Captivating", "A Page Turner", "Must Read", "Put this at the TOP of your List"

The world is ripe for destruction in 1953. The Korean War drags on and the Rosenbergs are executed as spies. Senator Joseph McCarthy convinces the country communists are infiltrating the government, and the threat of nuclear war festered in the collective consciousness of the nation.

While the nation worries about communist bombs, sixteen-year-old Bernadette Vaughn holds court in the family bomb shelter, finagling a way to read Kinsey's groundbreaking work on human sexuality. She obsesses about boys and big city life. Her best friend, Faith McNulty is a devout Catholic who dreams of staying in their small town, marrying Allen Hanlon, and raising a family. Their awkward and unattractive friend, Octavia Mansfield doesn't have room in her life for boys, dreams, or God. She spends most of her young life caring for her severely disabled brother.
Their conversations about what each of them would do if the end of the world were imminent become the catalyst for a prank that spins wildly beyond control and draws in an entire town.

Left behind in the wake of that summer's events are their unrealized dreams and open wounds. In 1973, a reunion trip to the small town of their youth returns them to the summer of 1953 and the passion and betrayal that changed their lives.

If you liked the Ya - Ya Sisterhood, The Help, or just love good character driven novels, Atomic Summer is for you!

Hello, I'm G G Collins, author of the "Reluctant Medium." My reporter Rachel Blackstone calls back the dead using a Native American ceremony. Of course, things go bad in translation. Working on "Lemurian Medium" in which Rachel goes astral traveling. She's an amateur and not even a promising one, so one hopes she isn't lost forever in the cosmos.

My reading tastes usually have to do with whatever I'm researching. So right now it's on Lemuria and astral travel. But I enjoy animal stories and just finished "Rescue of Bell and Sundance" a Canadian story. I also like animal communication books and most anything by Shirley MacLaine. I especially enjoyed her book "The Camino." When I read fiction it's usually mystery thriller with a hint of weird.

I'm not very good with these forums -- just starting to get the hang of Goodreads, so excuse me if I'm not Shelfari savvy yet.

My name is Bessie S. James and I'm the co-author of a book called "Intimate Acts with Strangers". It is FREE today!

    http://www.amazon.com/Intimate-Acts-Strangers-Erotobiography-ebook/dp/B008MT8Y2W

Please be warned. I'll say it again just to make sure: Please be warned. As one reviewer commented recently in a Kindle forum:

"It is very graphic, and can be classified as erotica/pornography, but it is also a good look at the suburban escort business as well. Not for those who are easily offended, but the writing is so good, I could not put it away."

Already today it is number one in non-fiction, "Sexuality".

    Number twenty in "Memoirs".

I hope you will enjoy it.

Hi, everyone! I am flogging my crime thriller "Born to Kill" which is free in Amazon's Kindle store this weekend (Nov 17-19): http://www.amazon.com/Born-to-Kill-ebook/dp/B0094WFGDQ

"How far would you go to clear your name if a famous criminal profiler called you a menace to society?

When Matt Hamilton got a full scholarship to Stanford, he had one shot at clawing his way out of poverty. But then forensic psychologist Susan Witherell told America about the genotype shared by Matt and all convicted serial killers. As media hype spun the message out of control, Matt refused to sit by and watch his dream turn to ashes. Now he's in prison, getting unwelcome attention from Witherell's first big profiling success story, the serial killer Jack Carlson.

Matt just wants to be normal. Susan just wants attention for her discoveries. Jack just wants to share the 'love' he received in his recent religious conversion. But three people this single-minded can’t all get what they want."

Recommended for fans of gritty crime novels, who can handle reading profanity and graphic violence. One reviewer compared it to Chuck Pahlaniuk. Hope some of you read it and enjoy it!

Hi! I'm not very romantic, but my first novel did receive a good review from:

    Coffee Times Romance:

    RARITY FROM THE HOLLOW
    ROBERT EGGELTON
    Science Fiction/Fantasy

Lacy Dawn is a teenager with some minor changes in an average life that a normal teenager would not have in real life. She has a dog that can do technical details to improve life as she knows it, and Lacy Dawn has an android boyfriend to boot.

DotCom is the person responsible for the risks Lacy Dawn is willing to take to better her lifestyle. He shares what he knows with Lacy Dawn so that they can have a chance of being together.

But what will it cost DotCom and Lacy Dawn to take their own lives in their hands in order to save two planets?

A unique way to bring two different races together. At first, I was worried that I was not going to be able to like the world Mr. Eggleton had created. But I was surprised that as I read more of the book, the people had a way of touching a part of you that I was not expecting at all. A good read for any lover of satire and science fiction. A well written book.

Hi all.... I finally decided to check out Shelfari after putting it off too long, and this is my first group to join. I wrote "Lesson One: Revolution!" and some other titles. I probably won't get the "author" badge on my profile photo here because I didn't know about that before setting up my account, and I used my "as a shopper" account with Amazon rather than my Author Central account (which wasn't intended to be a separate account but that's another artifact of jumping without looking first). :-/ Someday hopefully Amazon will offer account merging capabilities! Anyway, all of my books are available for the Kindle, and all but one are available in print as well. Most are also available for other e-reader apps and devices, basically anything that can handle an ePUB file.

Who are you? I would love to read something and have over a thousand of free ebooks, no thanks to my daughter-in-law that loaded me up as if I couldn't get loaded by myself. Do you have any professional reviews. I no longer count reader reviews after all their disappointments. I don't mind trying a self-published if there is a professional recommendation. Otherwise, I figure that if one can't get published except by spending money to publish oneself, that person is not an author -- they are an 8th grader with a 'C" in creative writing class. Anyway:

…unabashed, unashamed exploration of the life of young Lacy Dawn, as she learns that she is the savior of the universe. The naked, genderless android, Dot-com… Add her abusive father, her weak-willed mother, a sexually-abused ghost for a best friend…trees that talk to her, a dog that can communicate telepathically with cockroaches and so much more.
There is so much to this story, and its writing is so unblinkingly honest…spares us nothing…her father beating her and her mother, the emotions…the dark creeping insanity that eats away at her Iraq-veteran father, and the life in general of people too poor, too uneducated to escape.
In part, it is a grueling exposition of what children endure when …abused. …the only way…to escape is to learn that she is the savior… strong, tough, smart—all those attributes that any child should have—and she reminds us that children are survivors, adaptive and optimistic.
But don't think you're going to be reading something harsh and brutal and tragic. This book is laugh-out-loud funny at times, satiric of almost everything it touches upon…The characters from the hollow and from the planet Shptiludrp (the Mall of the Universe) are funny almost to the point of tears.
    ...It's absolutely fantastic…."

    First Chapter:
    Cozy in Cardboard
Inside her first clubhouse, Lacy Dawn glanced over fifth grade spelling words for tomorrow’s quiz at school. She already knew all the words in the textbook and most others in any human language.
Nothing’s more important than an education.
The clubhouse was a cardboard box in the front yard that her grandmother's new refrigerator had occupied until an hour before. Her father brought it home for her to play in.
The nicest thing he's ever done.
Faith lay beside her with a hand over the words and split fingers to cheat as they were called off. She lived in the next house up the hollow. Every other Wednesday for the last two months, the supervised child psychologist came to their school, pulled her out of class, and evaluated suspected learning disabilities. Lacy Dawn underlined a word with a fingernail.
All she needs is a little motivation.
Before they had crawled in, Lacy Dawn tapped the upper corner of the box with a flashlight and proclaimed, "The place of all things possible -- especially you passing the fifth grade so we'll be together in the sixth."
Please concentrate, Faith. Try this one.
    "Armadillo."
    "A, R, M, … A … D, I, L, D, O," Faith demonstrated her intellect.
"That's weak. This is a bonus word so you’ll get extra points. Come on."
Lacy Dawn nodded and looked for a new word.
I’ll trick her by going out of order – a word she can't turn into another punch line.
“Don’t talk about it and the image will go away. Let’s get back to studying,” Lacy Dawn said.
My mommy don't like sex. It's just her job and she told me so.
Faith turned her open spelling book over, which saved its page, and rolled onto her side. Lacy Dawn did the same and snuggled her back against the paper wall. Face to face -- a foot of smoothness between -- they took a break. The outside was outside.
At their parents’ insistence, each wore play clothing -- unisex hand-me-downs that didn’t fit as well as school clothing. They’d been careful not to get muddy before crawling into the box. They’d not played in the creek and both were cleaner than the usual evening. The clubhouse floor remained an open invitation to anybody who had the opportunity to consider relief from daily stressors.
"How'd you get so smart, Lacy Dawn? Your parents are dumb asses just like mine."
"You ain't no dumb ass and you're going to pass the fifth grade."
"Big deal -- I'm still fat and ugly," Faith said.
"I'm doing the best I can. I figure by the time I turn eleven I can fix that too. For now, just concentrate on passing and don't become special education. I need you. You're my best friend."
"Ain't no other girls our age close in the hollow. That's the only reason you like me. Watch out. There's a pincher bug crawling in."
Lacy Dawn sat almost upright because there was not quite enough headroom in the refrigerator box. She scooted the bug out the opening. (delete here for word count) Faith watched the bug attempt re-entry, picked it up, and threw it a yard away into the grass. It didn't get hurt. Lacy Dawn smiled her approval. The new clubhouse was a sacred place where nothing was supposed to hurt.
"Daddy said I can use the tarp whenever he finishes the overhaul on the car in the driveway. That way, our clubhouse will last a long time," Lacy Dawn said.
"Chewy, chewy tootsie roll. Everything in this hollow rots, especially the people. You know that."
"We ain't rotten,” Lacy Dawn gestured with open palms. “There are a lot of good things here -- like all the beautiful flowers. Just focus on your spelling and I'll fix everything else. This time I want a 100% and a good letter to your mommy."
"She won't read it," Faith said.
"Yes she will. She loves you and it'll make her feel good. Besides, she has to or the teacher will call Welfare. Your daddy would be investigated -- unless you do decide to become special education. That's how parents get out of it. The kid lets them off the hook by deciding to become a SPED. Then there ain't nothing Welfare can do about it because the kid is the problem and not the parents."
"I ain't got no problems," Faith said.
    "Then pass this spelling test."
"I thought if I messed up long enough, eventually somebody would help me out. I just need a place to live where people don't argue all the time. That ain't much."
"Maybe you are a SPED. There's always an argument in a family. Pass the test you retard," Lacy Dawn opened her spelling book.
Faith flipped her book over too, rolled onto her stomach and looked at the spelling words. Lacy Dawn handed her the flashlight because it was getting dark and grinned when Faith’s lips started moving as she memorized. Faith noticed and clamped her lips shut between thumb and index finger.
This is boring. I learned all these words last year.
"Don't use up the batteries or Daddy will know I took it," Lacy Dawn said.
"Alright -- I'll pass the quiz, but just 'cause you told me to. This is a gamble and you'd better come through if it backfires. Ain't nothing wrong with being a SPED. The work is easier and the teacher lets you do puzzles."
"You're my best friend," Lacy Dawn closed the book.
They rolled back on their sides to enjoy the smoothness. The cricket chorus echoed throughout the hollow and the frogs peeped. An ant attempted entry but changed its direction before either rescued it. Unnoticed, Lacy Dawn's father threw the tarp over the box and slid in the trouble light. It was still on and hot. The bulb burned Lacy Dawn's calf.
He didn't mean to hurt me -- the second nicest thing he's ever done.
"Test?" Lacy Dawn announced with the better light, and called off, "Poverty."
    "I love you," Faith responded.
"Me too, but spell the word."
"P is for poor. O is for oranges from the Salvation Army Christmas basket. V is for varicose veins that Mommy has from getting pregnant every year. E is for everybody messes up sometimes -- sorry. R is for I'm always right about everything except when you tell me I'm wrong -- like now. T is for it’s too late for me to pass no matter what we do and Y is for you know it too."
"Faith, it's almost dark! Go home before your mommy worries," Lacy Dawn's mother yelled from the front porch and stepped back into the house to finish supper. The engine of the VW in the driveway cranked but wouldn't start. It turned slower as its battery died, too.
Faith slid out of the box with her spelling book in-hand. She farted from the effort. A clean breeze away, she squished a mosquito that had landed on her elbow and watched Lacy Dawn hold her breath as she scooted out of the clubhouse, pinching her nose with fingers of one hand, holding the trouble light with the other, and pushing her spelling book forward with her knees. The moon was almost full. There would be plenty of light to watch Faith walk up the gravel road. Outside the clubhouse, they stood face to face and ready to hug. It lasted a lightning bug statement until adult intrusion.
"Give it back. This thing won't start," Lacy Dawn’s father grabbed the trouble light out of her hand and walked away.
"All we ever have is beans for supper. Sorry about the fart."
"Don't complain. Complaining is like sitting in a rocking chair. You can get lots of motion but you ain't going anywhere," Lacy Dawn said.
"Why didn't you tell me that last year?” Faith asked. “I've wasted a lot of time."
"I just now figured it out. Sorry."
"Some savior you are. I put my whole life in your hands. I'll pass tomorrow's spelling quiz and everything. But you, my best friend who’s supposed to fix the world just now tell me that complaining won't work and will probably get me switched."
    "You're complaining again."
    "Oh yeah," Faith said.
"Before you go home, I need to tell you something."
To avoid Lacy Dawn's father working in the driveway, Faith slid down the bank to the dirt road. Her butt became too muddy to reenter the clubhouse regardless of need. Lacy Dawn stayed in the yard, pulled the tarp taut over the cardboard, and waited for Faith to respond.
"I don't need no more encouragement. I'll pass the spelling quiz tomorrow just for you, but I may miss armadillo for fun. Our teacher deserves it," Faith said.
"That joke's too childish. She won't laugh. Besides, dildos are serious business since she ain't got no husband no more. Make 100%. That's what I want."
"Okay. See you tomorrow." Faith took a step up the road.
"Wait. I want to tell you something. I've got another best friend. That's how I got so smart. He teaches me stuff."
    "A boy? You've got a boyfriend?"
"Not exactly," Lacy Dawn put a finger over her lips to silence Faith. Her father was hooking up a battery charger. She slid down the bank, too.
He probably couldn’t hear us, but why take the chance.
A minute later, hand in hand, they walked the road toward Faith's house.
"Did you let him see your panties?" Faith asked.
"No. I ain't got no good pair. Besides, he don't like me that way. He's like a friend who's a teacher -- not a boyfriend. I just wanted you to know that I get extra help learning stuff."
    "Where's he live?"
Lacy Dawn pointed to the sky with her free hand.
"Jesus is everybody's friend," Faith said.
"It ain't Jesus, you moron," Lacy Dawn turned around to walk home. “His name’s DotCom and….”
Her mother watched from the middle of the road until both children were safe.

Too long, didn't read, not really worth it. Was this posted as an example of writing similar to an "8th grader with a 'C" in creative writing class" or was that just a coincidence?

Hi, My name is Trina and I am a new author as of January 2013. I now have my book "Wrong Victim: A Novel" published in both paperback and kindle version. It is a kind of a psychological thriller/mystery plus "girl power" kind of book. I really hadn't planned on writing this type/genre of book, it just kind of started and progressed and then ended the way it is. Family members have liked it (lol!). I think my writing style is different, I don't know... it is just me.

I would love to have someone who isn't a person named in my will to read my book for me and let me know if they like my style of writing and the story (or not). Criticism is welcome, just as long as it is constructive and not destructive.
Thanks, Trina Ator Ernst (published under name)

HI! Who published your novel? I would never read a self-published anything. How did you get it published? Did you have to pay anybody to publish it? If not, and if it has professional book reviews (not reader reviews) I am interested. I have so many free kindle ebooks from my daughter-in-law that I'd rather have a heart attack than even look at the list. If you have something for real, please let me know because I'm kinda hungry for a read and can't find anything despite the thousands "advertised." I hate most "best sellers" as they are mostly fake from corporate america. Indie are juvenile. What happened to good ol' reads? Check out Rarity from the Hollow, a small press production with no advertising (and minimal sales, which is an asset).

Robert, I have no idea if your above message was specifically to me, or to everyone. Nevertheless, I'll answer it.

While I did self-publish my 2nd edition of "The Mormon Missionaries" (making it available in paperback, POD and as an ebook--and yes, it cost me), the 1st edition was published by a traditional publisher, Kregel Publications, then went out of print with all rights reverting to me. My other book, also published by Kregel, "Out of the Cults and Into the Church" is still under contract with them for the paperback, but since my contract didn't specify anything about electronic printing, I was able to legitimately put an ebook out on that myself and not violate my contract. Since Kregel Pub is a traditional publisher, I didn't have to pay them anything, and they gave me an advance. This was back in the good ol' days when submitting to a publisher without an agent was much easier.

Regarding not reading self-published writers, I wouldn't dismiss all of them, Robert. While admittedly there are some self-pub. books that are poorly written and desperately need editing, there are some good self-pub'd ones out there--often by those who have been published by traditional publishers previously. You can go on Amazon and read the first chapter of most books and be able to tell if they are well written.

Many authors who have been published by traditional publishers in the past are now turning to self-publishing. Why? (1) Because trying to get an agent today is like pulling teeth; (2) It will take about 2 years after acceptance by a trad'l publisher before your book will even appear in a store; and (3) unless you end up a best seller, royalties are diddelysquat.

I am presently working on a thriller novel and went back and forth with myself on whether to submit to a trad'l publisher again, or self-publish. But when I thought about how I can make more money on royalties by self-publishing, plus get my book out faster, the answer became clear. And yes, for self-pub'd ones, you will have to pay someone to format the book for an ebook (unless you can do it yourself), and for the paperback version, pay a printer. But I've decided I would rather go the self-publishing route and get my book "out there" so I can move on to something else.

Be aware that if you are going to put a book out as an e-book and have it formatted that way, it is important to choose someone who has been recommended. I got burned on two guys, one of whom kept dragging his feet until finally he admitted he couldn't do it, and then said he was too broke to refund my money. I now have a guy I totally trust and he really goes the extra mile to be sure everything about your book is exactly to your liking. If anyone needs that referral, they can contact me.

Some people need "professional" recommendation to tell them what to like. Other people can think and decide for themselves without needing to be led along by an "authority" figure. The two types can get along just fine as long as nobody makes a point of aggressively challenging others, like demanding to know what "authority" figure is behind another person's work. Robert, you need to rein yourself in.

    Janis,

Thanks for the information. I'll be 62 in a couple of months. My dream was to retire early and spend my time writing between visits to the free health clinic. Unfortunately, after working forty years for nonprofit social service agencies, I don't have money saved to pay for ebook formatting or printing (or medical treatment). In general, I agree with your logic, but I still hold the "old fashioned" view that if one spends a penny to have a work published, that person does not meet the definition of "author" of that work.

The above noted view is an unfortunate barrier to accomplishing my dream, as I also agree with you that traditional publishers have forsaken their roles as advancers of civilization in pursuit of profit. In my opinion, perhaps similar to yours, Agents have always been equivalent to used car salespersons, with occasional exception when a work is so compelling that it reaches into a particular agent's heart. Looking back, I screwed up by turning down one agent's interest, but that was seven years ago and a lot has changed since then.

I write for enjoyment. Author proceeds are donated to a nonprofit agency for the prevention of child abuse in West Virginia where I live. Especially given the federal cuts and the gridlock on the budget, every little bit that I can give to these kids helps. The Lacy Dawn Adventures project is also an emotional boost for the staff of Children's Home Society (the recipent) who work for low pay trying to find permanent loving homes for the kids.

Thanks again for your input. I have my next novel almost finished, but have stalled because I don't know what to do with it. The situation reminds me of '72 when I bought a farm sixteen miles from a job promise but too far from all other prospects. My wifes' grandmother and her husband had retired to the country. When we told them about our plan, grandma says, "don't wait too long." They were too old to maintain the farm despite it having been theire lifelong dream. My job offer fell apart when a change in mental health policy (the institution was closed) and I got so busy helping kids in so many other ways that the last thing I need is an ego boost. But, we are too old to move to the country now, and maybe Lacy Dawn Adventures will never succeed either as envisioned. But, at least I've got my name on the covers of a few traditionally published works even if Rarity from the Hollow never buys another kid a new pair of tennis shoes.

    Good luck with your projects!

    Robert,

Well, you at least have your "Rarity from the Hollow" published by a publisher who pays a royalty, although I never heard of Dog Horn Pub. before. However, I did, check out their website. My compliment for your donating your proceeds to a nonprofit agency, and I'm happy you have a book published wherein you can truly call yourself an "author" according to your own criteria.

You say you don't know what to do with your next novel? Strange. You already have a foot in the door with Dog Horn. Don't you want to go with them again? I know you are against self-publishing, but when you talk about the expense of ebook printing, don't go by those companies you see that offer packages for hundreds and hundreds of dollars. You can find very efficient individuals who can format it and get it on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and iTunes for much cheaper.

Thinking of your new novel, if you don't want to go with Dog Horn again and do end up considering self-publishing, you can have your novel done as a POD (print on demand) on Amazon for very little expense. For example, I had Create Space (arm of Amazon) format and place my nonfiction (272 pages) book on Amazon as a POD for only $166.00. If that is of interest and money is tight, you could save either $14/mo for one year, or $7/mo for two years, and since time is going to pass anyway, set your goal. As a self-publisher, you'll probably end up with a better royalty rate than what Dog Horn offers. Nevertheless, even with all that said, I do respect your personal stance.

If you want to draw more potential buyers to your book you have with Dog Horn, as an individual you can help by promoting Rarity on Twitter, FB and Linkedin. I am amazed at the response I get from Twitter alone when I advertise my different blog articles that I publish once a month. I get at least 2,000 hits each time. Of course, on my blog, I also advertise my books. Setting up a blog for yourself would be an option you might want to consider.

Nevertheless, with all that said, I wish you well on your novel that is in progress.

      Janis,

Thanks. Dog Horn Publishing apparently has no money in its budget to promote. Maybe it is too small. It did spend many hours and postage costs on the ms. going back and forth with marks in the margins that I had to look up on the internet to figure out what was instructed. I appreciate this investment. But, I don’t necessarily expect any better sales if it would decide to publish the next novel.

I need to learn how to set up a blog. Do you publish book reviews? How much did it cost to set up your blog? I’m not very tech savvy. Thanks again.

    Bob,

To answer your first question, do I publish book reviews, the answer is no. Sorry. But, do a Google search for book reviewers (try typing in Free Book Reviewers). There are some who charge a fee and some who don't. Of course, having a book reviewer review your book doesn't necessarily guarantee sales, but it at least will get it out there.

Regarding setting up a blog. There are two that you can turn to. Word Press and Blogger. Since I am technically challenged (ha!) I went with the simpler blog program, that of Blogger. It is through Google.

To check it out, go to www.google.com. Then in the search box type in blogger. One of the first in the list you'll see is "Blogger: Create your free blog." Read that. It also has a video tutorial. There was a lot to figure out, but believe me, it was far easier than Word Press. For Blogger, you have to have a Google Account (which is also free). Everything was free.

Hi everyone, I am new to Shelfari. I have just helped a friend publish on kindle his first novel "Uncut & Unfinished" the first in "The Salvors Series".

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AQVO6DA

I got to know Barry the Author a few years back while playing some bowls, we then got talking about books and what we like to read, then he tells me that he had written a book, I was a bit shocked but he then gave me the manuscript and "Oh Boy" what a book!

This story follows an array of interesting characters battling together and against each other in the search for war time treasure. The plot revolves around a wartime plane that ditches in the channel with gold and Diamonds on board and covers how different groups of people compete to recover what they think is theirs.

They all play their part in making this a fantastic read, with plenty of highs, lows and surprises along the way.

It's very long, but as with all good stories, I found it hard to leave it alone, consuming all my spare time for a couple of weeks.

Be warned, it is very graphic with a number of violent action and sex scenes, plenty of death and mayhem, so if you're squeamish, this isn't for you.

I found myself rooting for the heroes and hating the villains, just as you should in a good story and I loved it.

We will be having a Free Promotion some time in May or sooner when the second in the Series "Close The Door" is released and will keep you updated on that..

We will be giving away both in our promotion "Uncut & Unfinished" and "Close The Door"..

    Authors Website: http://www.salvorsseries.co.uk/

    Publishers Website: http://jyampublishers.co.uk/

    Barry Jyam on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Barry-Jyam/e/B00AYEOYZY/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_pop_1

Please check out the book. Many thanks!
