    Mary, Oh Mary

Black skirt and a white shirt,
    My brother stands beside me.
The walls are pale, the chairs cold,
    And the wood is dark

    Her face is still,
Not smiling like she always was.
    Her skin is pasty,
    Red hair a mess.

As water leaked from my eyes,
I reached out to touch her hand,
Cold and still, grasping her cigarettes.
As skin touched skin, I heard her voice.

“Do not worry, I love you all.
Do not cry. I will never leave you.”
The voice was croaky, rough yet soft.
It made me smile through the pain.

I sat next to my father and hugged him tight.
Good-bye for now, Grandma Mary, Good-bye for now.
