Are vampires dead and buried - permanently?

I've posted this on other YA groups.

The vampire boom may be drawing to a close according to some publishing pundits.

But if you scan through the posts in many reader forums, the bloodsuckers with the looks of an Angelina Jolie or a Johnny Depp are still attracting hosts of readers (mainly female).

These paranormal romantic vampires tend to be extensions of Mills & Boon type heroes and heroines - square jawed, sensitive, rakish, seductive and so on. Not like 'real' vampires at all.

Some time back I read that true vampires in the mould of Vlad The Impaler and other 'families' in certain parts of Eastern Europe where the vampire myths originated were actually suffering from a form of congenital haemophilia - which would explain a lot if true.

Today's fictional vampire has become an iconic stereotype, albeit a hugely successful one as series such as 'The Hunger Games' proves beyond a shadow of a doubt.

But, are publishers becoming disenchanted with the fangs and the undead? If not, just what is the attraction? Have there ever been any disgustingly ugly, dissolute, savage and brutal vampire heroes and heroines in popular fiction? Or are the undead only seductively attractive because they perform an esoteric form of rape - sucking the life blood in an agony of pleasurable excitement.

    Thoughts?

Thank Heavens, I'm tired, tired, tired of not finding anything but bloodsucking sex objects on the shelves.

I stilll love vampire books, but i haven't read a lot of them lately. I have a whole vampire series on my bookshelf that i still have to read. I love them with all my heart and i think that there will always be a little bit of popularness in vampire books.

I am still working my way through many of the saries that are out there. I enjoy them, and the kids seem to as well. Many of my reluctant readers enjoy them and pick them up when they refuse to read anything else, so I hope they are not "dying" out, no pun intended. :)

I think Vamps have been big for a while, they come in and out of style like for instance they were in during the Interview with a Vampire craze then died out then came back with Twilight. Way back when there was a long string of Dracula Ballets and Opera's that were hot, then they died down. But, even when they die down they never go away.

I care think as a reader and a writer the story is what matters the most to me, not the type of magical creature in it.
