    Claims Thread

    Save Changes Cancel

When you are ready to claim a title to work on, post a reply to this thread with the following information:

    Title of the work
    Author of the work
Shelfari link to the book page

Please also let me know if the book is on the List of Books to Work here: http://www.shelfari.com/groups/51004/discussions/185850/List-of-Books-to-Work

If the title is NOT on the List of Books to Work, please do one of the following:
    1. Confirm that the book is on the SF Group shelf here: http://www.shelfari.com/groups/10013/lists/read. If the book IS on the SF Group shelf, note that in your post.
    2. Confirm that the book is NOT on the SF Group Shelf and then add it to that group's shelf. It goes without saying that you should only add books that you believe are relevant to that group's interests -- in other words, science fiction novels or anthologies. Once you have done this, note that in your post.

A proper claims post should look something like this:

I will claim The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury: http://www.shelfari.com/books/36009/The-Martian-Chronicles
It is currently on the List of Books to Work

    OR

I will claim Six Moon Dance, by Sheri S. Tepper: http://www.shelfari.com/books/55141/Six-Moon-Dance
It is not currently on the List of Books to Work or the SF Group Shelf, but I have added it to the SF Group Shelf.

When I see your post I will update the List of Books to Work and this group's bookshelf, then I will reply to your post to let you know that I have logged your claim.

Once you have completed your work on the book, reply to your claims post to let me know. I will then verify that you have completed the book, move the title from the List of Books to Work to the Hall of Fame and move the book from the "Currently Reading" section of this group's bookshelf to the "We've Finished" section of this group's bookshelf.

If there are any non-essential sections of the book detail page that you have NOT filled in, please note that in the Bits and Pieces thread here: http://www.shelfari.com/groups/51004/discussions/185863/Bits-Pieces---help-needed-thread

And then we get to start the process all over again! :)

      Cora,

The editions tab has some work remaining, if you have the time to do that.

I suspect that a combine was done for this title after you worked on the book.

Let me know when you're ready for me to mark it as complete!

Thanks for all the hard work. There are many editions of this classic on the catalog and you did a really fine job of putting them all together!

Those four editions at the end that are uncategorized are editions that I requested to be moved since the three German ones are the entire trilogy and the last one is a periodical. I guess I jumped the gun and should have waited to say finished until that request was approved. Sorry about that. I will repost once that approval goes through.

There are several titles on the shelf that puzzle me too.

Unless you guys tell me to remove a title from the Science Fiction Shelf (and from the list on this group), let's just go ahead and work the title.

I'm gonna ask you to specify (just edit your post - don't add a new post) the title names by Carey. This helps me keep an audit trail to verify my own changes to the list of books.

I added New Amsterdam to the list (You get a prize for being the 1st to complete an edit on this team. Please accept this virtual box of chocolates with my thanks! LOL)

You also showed me that I need to change/add the approach to notifying the team that a book is completed.

To help me keep the audit trail for my own list edits, let's post a new thread to this group when editing the book is finished. Hoping that will ensure that I don't miss any such notifications!

      Thanks SO much!

Here's the problem. If there is a combine pending and someone is working on the book detail page, the combine, when processed, might mess that up.

You are so FAST at combines (I work on the approval queues and you have many every day!) It isn't YOUR work that could get in the way, it is how slowly we approvers are able to get through the queue of pending requests.

What I suggest is that we ask people to team up with you.

Team - what do you think? If you look at Shelfari's Current Edits list, you'll see that Pequeno is #2 in the Top Twenty Editors! She kicks butt on this stuff. If she is willing to do the combine request work, that is a large part of the editing job. Randy?? That Star Trek Project is no small task. Might not Pequeno be able to use your Series records to do the combine work?

Thanks SO much, Pequeno, for being willing to help with this project!

Ah - the question about what IS Science Fiction! LOL.

Because there is unlimited shelfari group member access to the shelf, there is simply no way to audit what should and shouldn't be there except at the grossest level. I don't even try with this group because the shelf was so large when I was promoted to admin and because, as in the instances you cite, there is reasonable argument on both sides about whether the titles are appropriate for the shelf.

For this clean-up effort, we are going for the "number of books" we are working rather than cleaning up the shelf itself.

I do think this might be a VERY interesting discussion to have on the home group. You might consider posting there about how the group members use the group shelf and what might be the criteria they'd want to see for any book placed there.

I'd love to see the replies!

      Lookin' good.

I added a "Ridiculously Simplified Synopsis."

I set up a new subcategory in the editions tab for a couple of things: 1) English: Audio and/or Digital versions - there were quite a few of these. Hope I got them all! and (This is really interesting!) 2) German: Audio and/or Digital versions and 3) German

This was a really good example of the editions work. One of them (2 above) had a non-english title for the audio version. I used the Amazon link to check it out and found the product descriptions written in German. (I hope - may have been Dutch but I don't think so.)

Another thing we should check out is when the publisher name sounds unusual (to Americans). Check out that Amazon link that is almost always provided and you can get clues about whether this is a foreign language version even if it doesn't say so on the title line.

Thanks for all your hard work.

The Google Language tools are good for translating a web site to read a description. I have used this a lot in 1984 to identify some German study guides. http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en You can tell it the web address of the the page and the language you think it is and it will give you an English version of the page. Another tool is to just put a word or phrase in and it will translate it for you (you have to guess at the language).

Another language site is TextCat Language Guesser (http://odur.let.rug.nl/~vannoord/TextCat/Demo/textcat.html). You can put in a title and it will tell you what language it is likely to be (it is not 100% right all of the time, but it gives you somewhere to start). I take its guess and then plug it into google and see what it says.

Yep - I use those all the time while processing edit requests.

Good info for this group, thanks!

I just didn't take the time to validate my assumption about that one edition - I relied on my own (less than perfect) knowledge of German. Ironic since my maiden name in Dutch that I don't know more about that language.

It's exactly the wording from the dust jacket (well, before you reordered the paragraphs). . . I have noticed that in a lot of my hardcover editions of books, where there's more space for description, the publisher digresses to more opinionated discussion of the author/editor. . . for instance, in the Kushiel novels by Jacqueline Carey, I used all the mass market descriptions because the hardcover dust jacket descriptions were three times longer and all the extra length was comparing Carey to other authors. . . when I have both versions it's easy for me to pick the one that seems most appropriate to a description here, but in this case, that was all I had to go with. I can cut the second paragraph (it isn't strictly necessary, after all) but it IS what the publisher put on the book itself. . . what are your thoughts?

      Re the description content...

      Include the material that is:

      1) Descriptive of the content of this book
      2) Informative about the history of the book and/or the author

Avoid "sales talk" - enthusiastic wording, etc.

My personal style is to append "Source: Book Cover" when that is where I get the info.

Perhaps you can recommend wording for the thread "Description Section" that will make this easier to understand???

Oh, that's right, forgot we could edit the title. . .

The Company novels are really good, but should definitely be read in order, and the first three have a different feel from the later ones because they're first-person and much more narrowly focused. . . but if you do start reading them, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! :)

      Re: Descriptions
Maybe just add that the publisher sometimes includes sales content as well, and it should be edited out of even their descriptions?

      Fabooluz!

Randy - I copied the whole list to the "Title, Subtitle, and Series..." thread so that all the series lists would be in one place. The request for that came after I had asked you to place these in this thread and I should have notified you about that! Sorry I didn't get to you in time.

You can either leave your post as-is or you can delete the actual series records from it.

If you alter the names of any of these series or add new ones, post in the "Title..." thread with that information.

I do have a question about the 3rd one on the list - "Star Trek Archives: Best of." (Again - post the answer as a reply to the Star Trek Series Records List in the "Title,..." thread.) Did you just forget to include the URL or is this one so much under construction that you wish to hold off until it is more complete?

Axis of Time is a time travel / World War Two romp by John Birmingham. http://www.shelfari.com/series/Axis-of-Time

(Funny the stuff you come across when cleaning up, during editing editions I stumbled across a book 'Six Legged Soldiers' about the use of insects in wartime. It's now on my to read pile).

Re the "bad" and "better" copies...

I hope you read the OP on this thread. Believe me when I tell you that it is always better to do the combine work before you do anything else. Depending on several factors, the detail page, author work, and ALWAYS the editions tab work can be lost or, at least, really messed up by the combination process.

OK - Be sure to post the URL, the title, and the author for any book that you are currently working and especially when you are declaring the work to be complete.

Good job on War of the Worlds! This title seems to be a favorite of one of the top editors - I see combine requests from her frequently for it.

      Couple of things...

Do you wish to leave all the locations stuff that Shelfari inserted? Have to tell you I don't think it is at all helpful or useful but I will leave that up to you to decide. It is my own personal opinion that unless a character and location entry have an explanation or supporting text also included, they shouldn't be on either of these lists. Please look at both character and location entries and decide what you wish to do there.

I separated several books that shouldn't have been combined. This books (and other HG Wells things) seem to be a favorite and I see them in the approval queue all the time. Graphic Novels, comics, performances, plays, etc shouldn't be combined with the work from which they are drawn. In addition, one of the things that the Librarians are struggling with at the moment is when to separate children's versions from such books. They aren't the same in content but there is a line of books intended for juvenile readers that is almost the same - sorta like an ordinary abridged version - which should be combined. This book contains many editions that I think should be moved into a "Children's Version."

That would be a LOT of work and I'm not asking you to do that. Just be aware of such things as you go forward. You'll find these issues more prominent in classics such as WofW.

Another thing ... One of our prominent editors got carried away with the subcategories and started putting every variation known to man on books she edited. It isn't necessary and some may say it isn't helpful to separate hardbacks from paperbacks. There comes a point when such granularity creates more complexity than it reduces. It isn't "wrong" to do it but it is also certainly not "required." That may save you a few hours in future work too.

Hope all the members of this team read this post so that they can see this information. I'll check the guidelines thread to see if this is there as well.

Thanks again - good work! I've marked it as "complete" but hope you'll review the things I mentioned above.

Running low on books to work on again so. . . I will do all the single Vorkosigan Saga titles by Lois McMaster Bujold. Those are:

    Shards of Honor
    Barrayar
    The Warrior's Apprentice
    The Vor Game
    Cetaganda
    Brothers in Arms
    Mirror Dance
    Memory
    Komarr
    A Civil Campaign
    Diplomatic Immunity

I'm not 100% sure all of these titles are on the shelf, but any that aren't I will add, because I think they should be there. . . :)

      I think it is. . . wouldn't have it on my favorites shelf if I didn't. ;)

If you've never tried Bujold before, you really should. . . if you like stories that start with a little lie that ends up snowballing into greater and greater hilarity, definitely give The Warrior's Apprentice a try; if you like survival stories and a bit of romance start with Shards of Honor instead (either place is a good place to start the Vorkosigan Saga) but both are early in her career when her writing was a little rougher, so if you want to get a sense for the sort of writing she does at her best, check out her Hugo and Nebula award-winning short story "The Mountains of Mourning" (set just after The Warrior's Apprentice, but none of the books/short stories really need to be read in order as they weren't written in order and all have stand-alone plots) which Baen has up on its website for free: http://www.baen.com/library/1011250002/1011250002.htm.

Every book I do for this group I end up filling out more fields. . . it makes it take longer, but it IS awfully satisfying to see all that information up for everyone to use. :)

I don't know about this one specifically...but some vampire novels are science fiction and some are fantasy, so I think it depends. For example I just finished reading Fledgling by Octavia Butler. Although no one was sure what the origin of the Vampires in that book were, a group of the vampires believed they were aliens. The vampires were not mystical beings but another species and they were working with genetic engineering to enable them to be exposed to sunlight without burning. In this case I considered the novel to be science fiction. Twilight and Dracula though, I consider fantasy.

OK, finally finished this one. . . it took longer than expected, because I had to separate out the editions for the two-volume paperback version. I filled them in while I was at it, but they aren't on the SF group shelf, so I don't know if you want to count them for this group. They are:

The Science Fiction Century, Volume 1
The Science Fiction Century, Volume 2

And to keep them together I created a series listing for them:
      http://www.shelfari.com/series/The-Science-Fiction-Century
(If you do put the two-volume edition on the group shelf I'll add this series listing to that thread on this group, but not until then.)

      Nice work!

There is still a "volume 1" in the original book. Should that be separated or is that edition mislabeled?

It appears that the "new" books as indicated on the series record are volumes 1 & 2 of the original work. Right?

If so, I recommend putting the "whole" book on the series record as well. If not, I need some help understanding the relationships among all these editions. I scanned the titles/authors of the separated volumes and, together, they do appear to constitute the single edition work but I may have missed something. I especially liked the way that you did the contributor sections.

I'm gonna put all 3 of these on the shelf for this clean-up group.

Thanks for all the hard work!

D'oh! I thought I separated out all the single volumes. . . I submitted the request to separate that straggler you caught.

Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 do together comprise the original edition (the one I originally signed up for); I was undecided about putting the single-volume edition in the series listing or not, so since you came down on the side of including it I added it to the series.

It was fun (though time-consuming) doing the contributor section like that -- and a funny thing happened. I was putting in all those "contributors" and thinking to myself that I wish Shelfari broke down the author pages by what their contributions were to the books they were listed on (so author vs. editor vs. contributor) then I went to spot check to make sure that the author pages were getting updated with the addition of The Science Fiction Century and lo and behold Shelfari had read my mind and broken up the author listings by type of contribution! Of course, then I got caught up cleaning the contributions up on some totally unrelated books. . . but still, I felt like I was in one of those PC commercials. ;)

This stuff is addictive isn't it? Shelfari just did a sort of mini-survey of us approvers/librarians about why we did this kind of work and what they could do to encourage us.

I told'em not to worry about it. Obviously it is a sort of mental illness (OCD, I'm certain) and no encouragement is needed. There is a kind of personality that, when it encounters situations that need to be organized or cleaned up in some way, finds it impossible to turn away from that work.

This is so intrusive on my own life that my reading rate has been reduced to less than 1/3 of my usual pace.

I told Shelfari that I'd like to get the catalog to some sort of acceptable condition that I could actually READ my books rather than work on the Shelfari instantiations OF my books! LOL!

Thanks so much for your superlative work on this team,

I found doing standard google searches, using Amazon descriptions, and Wikipedia helps a lot. The google searches often find author sites that give good details and those searches also find professional reviews that can help stir memories.

Another thing you might do - I've done this a few times but have to be careful or I'll become a pariah on the site! - is look at who has ranked the book with 4 or 5 stars and ask if they'd be willing to either do the book or help you refresh your memory of it.

      RE Nemesis:

      1) I replaced the description with the blurb found on the book cover. I don't like it because I think it inaccurate and misleading but it does give more information than the one sentence which just extolled Asimov.

      2) Cleaned up the crap that "Shelfari" dumped in the locations and characters lists and added/completed Pitt.

      3) Edited the book number in the Asimov's Expanded Universe series record to be "1" rather than "-1". If, for some reason, this should be a negative number, just change it back.

Thanks for all your hard work!

      Re Old Man's War..

Now THIS is SF! Just bought it because of this detail page. Great job!

      Re Pale Horse...

Sigh. More magic. Don't know Anthony - is all his work in this fantasy/magic genre? Anyway - great job. I removed all the Shelfari added crap so, if you like, you might want to revisit the locations section. I think having a list of names without ties to the story or explanations of any kind is less than helpful. JMO. I'd rather have a blank section than just a list so it is up to you.

I cleaned up a couple of new editions that had been combined since you worked on the book.

Yeah. . . I'm always on the fence about tables of contents. . . because there isn't actually a formal table of contents in most of the books I've worked on, so I've been just typing in what I interpret as the chapter headings, but in these two books they're sort of borderline. . . they're there to indicate a change in perspective, rather than the end of a chapter. . . but the shift in perspective does accompany a shift in the plot, so I figured it made sense.

(Another one just as long that I did was for The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden -- whew! Lots of typing!)

This one is done. I wanted to note that someone had already done the edition work and chose to separate hardcovers and paperbacks into language edition subheadings. Although I do not usually do that, since someone put so much time into it I did not undo their work.

So I was scanning the list of titles and noticed that half of the Vorkosigan omnibuses are also on the SF group list. . . so, since work on each individual title is also obviously the same work that needs to go into the omnibuses, I may as well claim them too. ;) They are:

    Currently on the shelf:
    Cordelia's Honor
    Miles Errant
    Miles, Mystery, and Mayhem

    Adding to the shelf:
    http://www.shelfari.com/search/books?Keywords=young%20miles
    http://www.shelfari.com/books/3551682/Miles-in-Love
    http://www.shelfari.com/books/684262/Miles-Mutants-and-Microbes

And because work on the omnibuses will include work on the two non-Vorkosigan Vorkosigan novels (I promise, that does make sense if you know the series, lol), and they're already on the group shelf, I will claim them too. They are:

    Falling Free
    Ethan of Athos

All of these, by the way, are by Lois McMaster Bujold. :)

PF - are you working from the SF shelf or from the list of books provided on this group? I'm definitely NOT complaining if you are, I'm just curious about how you select books for this effort.

I'll update the list and the shelf for this work later in the day. If you've been following my (as DL) rant sessions on various support-related groups lately, you'll know that the Shelfari developer (poor man) who has been assigned to resolve my issues believes they may be a result of some FF browser conflicts and has asked me not to use it for awhile. Very large pain in the posterior but I don't want my personal shelf to become even more screwed up than it currently is. Therefore I am using SAFARI which I, usually, restrict just for SFCU work.

I have about 600 more books to process for my personal shelf so I will be using this browser for that purpose for most of the day. I think FF can be used for SFCU work without too much risk and I will start that up later.

Thanks again for your excellent work on this team.

I was just looking at the list you kindly posted here (I thought that was just taken from the SF group shelf?). . . the actual group shelf is too unwieldy for me to scan quickly for books I know backwards and forwards.

I have noticed a bit of ranting. . . hope they get it straightened out! I don't use the features that have been giving you so much trouble that much myself, but it would be nice to know that if I ever did start to track my books that way my notes would stay where I want them! Good luck! (And good luck with Safari -- it always bugs the hell out of me when I have to switch to it, so my sympathies!)

(Sigh - having to use Safari as both DL and SFL is going to cause me a bit of member identity confusion.)

Yep - that is why I posted the list. In addition to capturing a baseline at the time we started this project, it was intended to help find titles and the status of the work being done on them.

      Glad you find it useful.

Safari is fine for managing this one project. It is a BEAST if you are attempting to manage a bookshelf, editing, combining, AND working with about 10 active groups. Oh well. I can put up with it for a while until they get the FF conflict repaired. Better than losing data, anyway. They suggested I use IE. I'll do that only if there is a gun pointed at my head!

I use Chrome as Book Crazy (another manifestation of my multiple member name disorder.) I don't hate it but I don't love it either.

The thing is that I am very active as all three member names. Browsers will only allow you to use one name at a time. BC is more important to be kept separate because of the statistics involving editing are associated with that name so, since I have all my bookmarks set up for BC on Chrome, I feel less comfortable using any other member name with that browser.

Having trouble with it too - it distinguishes, sometimes in very irritating ways, between a refresh and a reload. Drives me nuts.

      It's a short trip anyway,

      BC aka SFL aka DL

EtA: one of my major complaints about both Safari and Chrome is that there is no ad-blocker. I am convinced that is why Safari is SO much slower than FF. Seems to have lots more ads than Chrome for some reason.

I'm waiting for a combination request to go through. Is there a way to combine two books with their Shelfari URLs? Asimov is over too many pages, and sometimes translations do not indicate what the English title is.

I found some collections that included The Gods Themselves and I cleaned them up a bit too.

Also, while I'm waiting, I'd like to work on Enchantment by Orson Scott Card (http://www.shelfari.com/books/31052). It's in the list, but you haven't got an author's name next to it.

What I do in that situation is create a community list with all the titles I want to combine. . . I just add them all to the community list (usually labeled something like "To Combine") and then when I'm sure I have all the translations and alternate titles I'll submit one combine request with a bunch of notes to the effect of "I'm really sure this combine is correct, PLEASE approve it even though the titles are all over the map!" :)

Updated the list and shelf with your claims on Enchantment and Chaos. Just let me know when all the requests go through and you're sure they're as done as you can make them, and then I'll verify their completeness!

It looks like someone has since removed Chaos from the SF Group's shelf, but we've just been working the shelf that existed on Feb. 2nd -- it would be far too much work to keep track of all the books that get put on and then removed from the shelf to keep it totally up to date. If you find something on the SF Group bookshelf that you don't think belongs, feel free to remove it from that group's shelf; it's just going to stay on our list of books to work because that way we have a good baseline.

Great work! Sorry to hear about your laptop. . . even if everything was backed up, that won't be fun getting it all back together. Good luck with that!

On Enchantment, I hid the "Organizations," "Awards," and "Links to Supplemental Material" sections, and I added a few other Sleeping Beauty retellings to the "More Books Like This" section. I also removed the sales pitch from the description. In the "Editions" tab I separated out the audio and e-book versions and marked that one "unknown" set at the bottom "French."

On The Gods Themselves I removed the page numbers from the TOC, as they won't be the same in every edition, and I hid the "Organizations," "Links to Supplemental Material" and "Books with Additional Background Information" sections.

Is "LCM combine list" the community list you created to combine the different editions? If so, please don't forget to delete it now that the combines have processed. :)

Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card

The Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer

There doesn't look to be a lot to add for any of them. (I'm also getting my laptop back either tomorrow or Monday :D )

Also, I did (I think) all of the combination requests for Naomi Novik's Temeraire series and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series (including translations) before I joined this group. Unfortunately, I never finished Temeraire and of Artemis Fowl, The Lost Colony is the only one I re-read, so I don't really feel comfortable editing all of the series, but the combinations should save someone a lot of time.

I usually put them in "English" with the subset "Unknown/Broken Link" -- it's a fairly safe assumption that's they're English because they come from the American version of Amazon, but that way they're kept separate and at the end of the list.

But I don't think that's actually what the Shelfari gods want -- there's a discussion in the Librarians and Editors group about this sort of thing, and they apparently didn't originally intend for any of those subsets we've been using (Paperback/Hardcover/Audio etc.) to exist. . .

I added some stuff to the detail page of Catch-22, but it looks like the Editions tab still needs a bit of work. . . I spotted a number of editions that don't quite belong -- derivative works like the "dramatizations" and "critical editions" are supposed to have their own pages rather than be combined with the main work -- and there's some weird duplication of formats -- two different sections for "English-Hardcover" for instance. Can you clean that up a bit?

Other than that it looks good -- as soon as you're done with the editions let me know and I'll mark it off!

Hi science fiction lover! I don't know what to do with the 5 editions under the English tag. I think that the Gebundene Ausgabe is a german edition, but I'm not sure.
I've already combined the duplicate sections.

A note though: it's probably not necessary to break the English-language editions up into Hardcover/Paperback unless they stretch over multiple pages. I certainly wouldn't undo the work you did here, but if it takes more time to do that then there's no need.

Hi Phoenix, under the english tag I left editions (like the ones illustrated) that I don't know if they should be separated. They are others like the ones that says "Enriched class" or the ones that have more than 100 pages that maybe are annotated editions. And I don't know if it's worthy to create a Turtleback optional for the 2 or 3 books that has that kind of binding. Regards

Okay, that editions tab is a nightmare! DL listed it over in the Catalog Clean-Up Special Projects group (http://www.shelfari.com/groups/63223/discussions/250963/%5BIn-Progress%5D-(Editions-Tab-Cleanup)-Miscellaneous-Titles), so hopefully someone over there with more authority can figure out which ones belong and which ones don't. Until they do, I can't mark it complete.

Looks great! The characters are perfect.

Couple notes: I removed the sales pitch-y stuff from the description (the first paragraph), deleted the settings that were algorithmically added by Shelfari (they don't do anyone any good with no info!) and hid the Table of Contents and Awards sections because they were irrelevant. Also, you didn't have to subdivide the Editions tab quite so much -- when there's less than a page of editions I usually don't bother with the hardcover/paperback divide.

But absolutely fabulous work! I'll log it as complete when I put on the SFL persona.

Thanks. I split the editions that much as i felt the tab looked better/more organised that way.

I also changed back the first sentence as what i had in there is what is in my first edition, first printing hadcover copy that i got it from.

I never thought of hiding the irrelevant sections but i'll follow that process for other titles i work on.

      Re: First sentence
How weird! I wonder why they cut the "completely" in later editions. . . or maybe just in the U.S. edition. . .

      Re: Hiding sections
Yeah, it cleans up the page if you hide totally irrelevant sections, like the table of contents if there isn't one. I wouldn't recommend hiding sections that *could* be relevant but which you didn't fill in (for instance, I never hide the "Community List" section because someone else might want to put it on their list) but if you know for sure that the section can't be filled in for that particular book, just hide it.

I separated out a couple of editions that appeared to be only the titular novelette, not the whole collection; I also pulled the Table of Contents from Amazon (Amazon has a ton of table of contents, so if you want to expand the sections you're working on you should always check there first), erased all the algorithmically added stuff and hid a bunch of sections that aren't really relevant to short story collections. I will mark this complete when I get to the SFL persona.

I had to cut most of the description -- too much editorial, not enough content! Alas. . .

Also, the English-language translator was listed as a primary contributor; I removed that checkmark. Remember that translators are never listed as primary because they don't work on all editions of a work -- for instance, in this case, the Russian-language and French-language editions.

And the "First Edition" info was for the first English-language edition, so I switched that to the first edition (any language) but unfortunately Wikipedia was not terribly helpful with filling out that info.

Beyond that, just did the usual hiding of irrelevant sections; and again, don't forget to list this one over in the Bits & Pieces thread for the stuff you couldn't fill out.

Will mark complete when I switch to SFL.

      Re: Spook Country
Took out the last paragraph of the description -- it was all sales pitchy and unncessary.
Went ahead and deleted all the "algorithmically added by Shelfari" entries in the Characters and Settings -- there's no point to keeping those in, so when you find them if you aren't going to fill in information go ahead and delete them. :)
Also found one extraneous edition that I've submitted a combine request for.
Other than that, looks great! Will mark it done when I'm in the SFL persona.

      Re: Supertoys. . .
I removed the sales pitch and added a little more info to the description.
This is an anthology, right? Can you add the characters from the other stories, by any chance? And what do you think about moving the short story info to the description of the characters, rather than in their names? For instance having it look like this:
David: A pre-school boy who struggles to express his feelings to his mother and ponders the question of what is real. (In "Supertoys Last All Summer Long")
And I hid a couple irrelevant sections -- Awards, Links to supplemental material, and Books with additional background information.
Let me know about the characters, then I can mark this one done.

      Re: Forever Free
Removed the sales pitch from the description again.
Hid the Awards, Links to supplemental material, and Books with additional background information.

      Re: Forever Peace
Removed the sales pitch from the description again.
      Deleted the algorithmically added stuff.
Hid the TOC, Links to supplemental material, and Books with additional background information.

Re: Forever Free & Forever Peace
Are you sure about the proper series order for these books? Because Wikipedia has the order going War--Peace--Free, not War--Free--Peace, which is what is currently up. And from what I can tell, it seems like Forever Peace isn't strictly in the timeline of the series -- it looks like Forever Free is a sequel to Forever War, and Forever Peace is in the same universe but a little separate, in which case it could be on the series page without a number or be listed in the "Books with additional background information" section. But this is going on Wikipedia entries and Amazon, so I could be wrong. . . let me know, and when that's straightened out I can mark them both complete.

      Re: Algorithmically Added Stuff
On the detail page, in the "Characters" section and the "Settings" section there's a huge list of nouns pulled by some algorithm the Shelfari gods wrote -- for the most part, the algorithm gets stuff wrong, and it really isn't that helpful to have a list with no info anyway, so when we're going through the books we should delete it. You'll be able to tell that it's algorithmically added when you click the "edit" button in each of the sections -- when the list pops up it will have in bold "This character was algorithmically added by Shelfari" or "This setting was algorithmically added by Shelfari."

      Re: Stray Edition
Oy! That one's tough. It *looks* like Polish, but I can't get Google to translate it for me, and of course the page on Amazon has no info. I'll try and track the language down.

Can you cut and paste the links to the books from the "List of Books to Work" thread? That way it's easier for me to track everything. (And of course, if there are titles that aren't on that list let me know and give me the link to the Shelfari page so I can add them.)

And which titles have you already finished?

I will claim all of the unclaimed Enderverse books by Orson Scott Card. I think all of them are on the list of books to work.

    http://www.shelfari.com/series/Enderverse

    http://www.shelfari.com/books/16428 First Meetings
    http://www.shelfari.com/books/1683551 A War of Gifts
    http://www.shelfari.com/books/31042 Shadow of the Giant

    http://www.shelfari.com/books/11083 Speaker for the Dead
    http://www.shelfari.com/books/11085 Xenocide

By the way, it isn't yet marked on the list, but Ender's Shadow is complete.

      Okay!

First Meetings, A War of Gifts, Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Giant, and Speaker for the Dead are now marked complete!

Shadow of the Hegemon, Ender in Exile, and Xenocide each had a single stray edition floating around in the Shelfari ether, so I combined them and will mark them complete when the combination requests go through.

And your claim on Children of the Mind is now noted. (You were claiming it, right?)

Do you want to do Ender's Game as well, since you did the whole rest of the series?

And finally, a couple notes: First, when you encounter long lists of Shelfari-added info (usually in the Characters or Settings sections) you can go ahead and delete them unless you're planning on filling them in. They just clutter up the page and don't seem very helpful, plus a lot of the time Shelfari is wrong. ;) Second, I noticed that in a couple places you put books in the series in the "Books with Additional Information" and "Books Like This" sections -- it may just be me, but that seems kind of redundant when the series information is right there. Do you have strong feelings on the subject? Because if not you can probably just leave those blank.

But other than those few notes, that is some fantastic work you did! Thanks so much! (And sorry it took so long to get all this marked down properly -- I didn't have internet access for about a month, so I fell behind. I'm back now though!)

It's all good. I wasn't sure what to do about the books with background info part/similar books, but I'm fine with leaving them blank.

I think Children of the Mind is done, actually. And I would like to claim the following:

      Ender's Game

along with its prequel Green Rider (which is not on the list of books to work)

The Door Into Summer -- Found a more descriptive description; otherwise it looks awesome and I will mark complete when I switch to SFL.

The Green Hills of Earth -- There are still a few editions of this floating around if you search the title; can you take another pass at collecting them all, then let me know and I'll go over it again? Make sure to wait until the combination requests have processed and then do the editions tab over before you let me know though. Thanks!

The Menace From Earth -- Same as The Green Hills of Earth; make sure you do the combination request to put all the stray editions together, then go through the editions tab again and let me know.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress -- There are bunch of entries in the Characters and Settings sections that were algorithmically added by Shelfari; these don't really add anything (in fact they just clutter up the detail page) so we've been just deleting them as they pop up. So go ahead and delete the ones on the detail page here (JUST the blank algorithmically added ones, not the ones with details) and then let me know so I can mark this complete.

The Number of the Beast -- Perfect. Will mark complete as SFL.

The Rolling Stones -- This one was published under the title "Space Family Stone" in the UK -- go ahead and combine all those editions with the edition of The Rolling Stones and then clean up the editions tab and let me know so I can mark it complete. To make things a little easier I already submitted the title change request so it will say "The Rolling Stones, aka Space Family Stone."

The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag -- This one was published as "6 X H" but unfortunately I submitted a combine request before I got all the stray editions, so I'll finish it off. ;)

Time Enough for Love -- Thanks for filling in some of the detail page info!

Stranger in a Strange Land -- Looks good! Will mark complete as SFL.

Whew! That's a lot! Great work so far. . . just let me know when you take care of those last few issues and I'll mark the rest complete!

The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag -- Combine requests went through and I cleaned up the editions tab; will mark complete as SFL.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress -- I deleted the algorithmically added settings too; these in particular are good to delete because half the time in SF/F novels they aren't settings at all, they're just nouns the algorithm didn't think were names. Will mark complete as SFL.

On The Green Hills of Earth and The Menace From Earth don't forget that you'll have to redo some of the editions tab work after the combine requests go through; let me know when that's done and I'll mark them complete! :)
