Stones From the River
1994/Simon and Schuster
What can I say about this first book for 2010. It is epic and sweeping and compelling to read. It tales place in a fictional German town beginning in 1915. It is a passionate story of love, loss, community, injustice, secrets, pain, courage, strength, indifference, and bonds. Trudi Montag is a zwerg, a dwarf an outsider in her community. This is a story of her life, her neighbors and friends, her loves and losses and a world out of control. It is a story of indifference and survival, the need for love, the unwillingness to accept the reality of what is happening around you. It is a story of righteous gentiles, mental breaks, immense courage and how easy it is to not want to see the world events around you because they are subtle and some say they are good. I highly recommend this novel.
