Paging All Bookworms! Reading Challenge

This group is for enthusiastic people seeking a different type of reading challenge. Rather than tallying how many books you read, keep track of what you read and how many pages are in each book you finish. 1. What is the ONE best book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why did you like it?
Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness. I gave it 4 stars. Good writing, good character development, and I like the way the story unfolds.

    2. What is the ONE worst book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why didn't you like it?
Mating Call by Felicity Heaton. I gave it 1 star. Bad writing and a bad story. It was a Kindle freebie.

    3. What ONE book are you most looking forward to reading in August?
Biting Cold by Chloe Neill. This going to be a make or break it book for the series. She made some odd choices in the previous few books, and this book is going to determine whether I like the series or have to contemplate dropping it.

    1. What is the ONE best book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why did you like it?
Graceling by Kristin Cashore. I gave it 5 stars and a heart. Great characters, alot of action and I could just picture the locations.

    2. What is the ONE worst book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why didn't you like it?
Dinner for Two with Drama by Douglas T. Vale. I gave it 2 stars--I didn't actually hate it but it was just really implausable. Just bad writing.

    3. What ONE book are you most looking forward to reading in August?
Odd Hours by Dean Koontz With the new Odd Thomas book just being released I find I'm behind on the series and I want to get caught up so I can read the new one. And--I LOVE Odd Thomas.

    1. What is the ONE best book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why did you like it?

I can't pick out one book because I read the entire series. I would highly recommend the Chief Inspector Armande Gamache books by Louise Penny. The characters are wonderful and the plots intriguing.

    2. What is the ONE worst book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why didn't you like it?

I work with literacy students for my job so I thought I would try some of the "good reads" books (reading level - about grade 3 or 4), so I could recommend them to my students. I read "The Perfect Murder" by Peter James. It was terrible - there was questionable language and sexual crudeness within the first five pages. I just couldn't imagine giving that book to one of my students. The premise was interesting, but it fell flat! A husband and wife - both disillusioned - both working on a plot to kill the other.

    3. What ONE book are you most looking forward to reading in August?

I am looking forward to reading "The Midnight Circus". I have heard so much about it.

    1. What is the ONE best book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why did you like it?

I read two five-star books in July. Since one was a Dutch book (not available to most people in this group), I nominate the other one: Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Put Pratchett and Gaiman together and all hell breaks loose, which is more or less what this book is about ...

    2. What is the ONE worst book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why didn't you like it?

Not a book, but a short storie: The Five Orange Pips by Arthur Conan Doyle. I rated it two stars.
I usually like mysteries, because I can try to solve it for myself with the clues given in the story. In this story, Holmes gets a visitor, who puts a problem to him, then leaves. Holmes goes out, too, and the next morning he returns and has solved the entire case. Characters whom we've never heard of before are suddenly introduced as culprit ... It's all very vague, and the reader gets no chance to "think along".

    3. What ONE book are you most looking forward to reading in August?
A hat full of sky by Terry Pratchett. I just love his work

    1. What is the ONE best book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why did you like it?
Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson - This book was FANTASTIC!! Not what I expected, much better. Recommend for all to read.

    2. What is the ONE worst book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why didn't you like it?
I read a good number of stinkers this month, but if I must pick one, I think I would have to go for One By One by Phil Tucker. Too long, poor writing, and no purpose to the story. Horrible.

    3. What ONE book are you most looking forward to reading in August?
I have a lot of good books on my list for August, but I think I have to pick Huntress Moon by Alexandra Sokolov because the author is going to be joining the end of our discussion. Sort of cool!

ooooh - FEVER has been on my TBR for 6 years! I'm glad to hear that it is so good. I'm going to read it this month for the Historical Fiction tag in the Play Book Tag Group.

    1. What is the ONE best book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why did you like it?
PLAYING FOR PIZZA by John Grisham. This book is so different from what he usually writes. To me, it was just a feel good book that made me happy!

    2. What is the ONE worst book you read in July? What did you rate it? Why didn't you like it?
I read two stinkers this month, but I'm going to go with THE PROMISED WORLD by Lisa Tucker. I love her writing style, but this book was so weird. It was a jumbled up mess that centered on twins who are now in their 30's. Just weird stuff I couldn't process.

    3. What ONE book are you most looking forward to reading in August?
Well, since I read Erika's review above......FEVER 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson!

    1. Best book was hard to choose, but probably Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. It was well written and very interesting.

    2. Worst one was without a doubt, The School on Heart's Content Road by Carolyn Chute. It was confusing, strange, too many characters, no plot, to speak of and I only finished it because I started it and I have to finish all the books I start.

    3. The new Odd Thomas book by Dean Koontz.

I gave four books 5-star ratings in July .... hard to choose which one of those I liked best but ...
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury gets the gold medal.

As for the worst ... no contest there, one book got ZERO stars
Dylan: The Clique Summer Collection by Lisi Harrison

Looking forward to reading Doc by Mary Doria Russell

    Best:
I read two 5-star books last month, and I don't think I can choose between them. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline was engaging, nerdy, and a wonderful reinvention of the "quest" story. And then, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green was entirely amazing. Witty and sad and everything in between.

    Worst:
I'd have to say Obasan by Joy Kogawa. I couldn't even finish it. I love reading about war, its consequences, and Japanese culture. And for a book with all of that, you'd think it'd be more interesting, but it totally fell flat for me.

    Anticipating:
There's so many books I'm looking forward to reading in August, but I guess I'd have to say Paper Towns by John Green.
