Edgar Allan Poe Readers

Well...let me just say this once, this group is strictly only for discussions about Poe and his works, and there can also be other scary topics to talk about. I would also like to hear some of your scary stories, be sure to introduce yourself, and tell me your favourite Poe story.

Mine is the Cask of Amontillado, and the Black Cat....more »

In your opinion, what was Poe's scariest story to you, please go into detail as to why it was, for there are some of his works that I still have yet to read, do not ruin the story for me, just tell me how it is scary in your opinion.

The Pit and the Pendulum freaked me out, but I was in the fifth grade when I read it. I need a refresher, but I'll never forget the rats. :) I hate rats.

Depends on the reader's idea of what is and isn't scary. If someone was afraid of insane people, Tell-Tale Heart might freak them out. If they were afraid of rats, Pit In The Pendulum could do them in. If they were afraid of death, Masque Of The Red Death. Poe covered many common phobias with a sense of morbid humor that so few can really understand, which is why many people think him crazy. Poe didn't really seem afraid of anything, which is why he covered those common phobias people have. In other words, Poe was a genious at topics people were afraid of.

A man was tied down in an asylum and a pendulum was swinging closer and closer down to him and he was waiting to be cut in half and then he managed to get off of the table and he was saved by the inquisition.

the pit and tell tale heart, i don't remember the pit but i remember freaking out after reading it, but the tell tale heart was annoyingly haunting!! i hated wooden floors ever since i read it, they make me feel like a dead man is gonna crawl out of there.

Criminals will get ideas out of anything if not they make up they're own.

I've felt surprised and (very) shocked with the end of some stories, but have never felt terrified. The idea that it's only a story - and a fictional one - is very clear to me, so the feelings don't go much further.

I think his scariest story is THE FACTS IN THE CASE OF M. VALDEMAR. The ending is legitimately chilling.
