Ask the admins of the groups in question.
From a personal standpoint and as a rule, I only put books on a group shelf when I also post in a discussion thread about them. Of course, this being, again, influenced by the group's policy on bookshelf use. For example, if I remember correctly, without thread posting, I put some titles on this - the Anderson group - group shelf based on Annette's statement that we could put anything there that was relevant. Of course, I only put Anderson titles because of the group purpose. Can't see putting the J D Robb stuff, for example, because they aren't relevant (so far :-) ).
As long as the Shelfari police don't come after you, I don't think there is a "right" and "wrong"! Absent admin leadership, I guess you just have to ask yourself what you expect as a benefit to the group when you put a book on the shelf.
