Forever Summer Reading

Every summer I set out a stack of books that I plan on reading through the warmer months, while tanning or hiding out from the rain. Every person who joins should start their own thread with their goal for the months of June, July and August in reading. The goal can be a number of books they plan on reading, amount of time or pages, which ever...more »

Hi ,Sweetpea, good to hear from you.:) In the summer shelfari was really dead, people were away etc and I looked up that very site to find something to do,and I found this little group.I posted my smmer list, and did pretty well, and am looking forward tomy new autumn list.I certainly have quite a few challenges from different groups, and intend to put them in a thread on this site so I can keep track.
Wow,I just checked your shelf, and we have over 500 books in common! Thats pretty rare,I think. We must have excellent taste! ;)
Nancy, arent you a member of that group as well? I was,but once I found what I wanted,I left.I have a strict rule,no more than 10 sites,I cant cope with more than that

I had to stop myself joining one challenge where you had to read one book from each letter of the alphabet.Thank goodness it had to be done in order and my library tickets were maxed out,so I couldnt start.
Almost everyone joining shelfari signs on with 1001 Books to Read Before you Die,which was demoralising to say the least when I found I had only read about 130 books.Reading one of them a week,I would be in my 80's before I finished! lolAnyway,I am a Philistine in my reading mostly, the thought of serious, mostly downbeat books, full of angst-ridden characters didnt appeal at all.To put a cap on it,they revised the list, and about a dozen of the few books I read disappeared from the list.If these are all such life-enhancing,important books in 2007,suddenly in 2010 they are NOT?I had only read 2 of the 68 books listed for the first decade of this century, since I was busy happily reading paranormals and crime, not contemporary fiction. So bye bye 1001 books

I used to be a member of the 1001 Books to Read Before you Die group. After a couple of weeks I realised that I didn't like half the books posted on the list and I just wanted to read books that I like.

Here is a list of my challenges.
1 Author of the Day (Booknabbers group)I am trying to read at least one book from each AOTD.Fortunately I have read a LOT of authors over the years so that cuts it dow,but I still have round about 60 authors unread out of 193 possible authors.I try to read about 4 - 6 new authors a month.
2 3 by 3 by 3(Booknabbers) three books, from three different authors, from the shelves of three friends.
3 Theme of the month (Booknabbers) This month is scary books, because of Halloween,so I'm sure I can count several of my reads
4 Since I gave up romances years ago,I promised one friend I would read one book from each of 12 romance authors on her shelves. After 6 months I still have 4 authors to go,so I must get round to it soon! lol
5 Also trying to read 20 of the top 100 romances listed by AAR (All About Romances) That is going very slowly too.I' didnt read even one this month.
6 Forever Summer Reading.Simple this month, can count vampire books and serial killer books :p
7 Urban Fantasy group. This month includes reading a book with a witch in it,a book with an orange and black cover,a book with ''blood'' in the title,a book with a number in the title, and a title that is a single word.I always have to wrack my brains choosing books for that one! lol
8 A book for my mystery group
9 Making a Dent in Your Adult Shelves group- spell out the word HALLOWEEN

That should keep me out of mischief this month! lol

I loved the old Ellery Queen novels, but they are probably not available to you. What about Qiu Xiaolong's Inspector Chen crime novels, especially A loyal character dancer ? If you like light historical romances,Jayne Ann Krentz has written some fun books under her Amanda Quick pseudonym,I've read lots of them. Also Julia Quinn, the Bridgerton series.
How are you with classics? On Project Gutenberg you could read Xenophon's The Apology, about the death of Socrates.Very famous, would make you look learned-and is only 8 pages long! lol
Apart from that you have only Chinese authors.Fantasticfiction has about a dozen, but locating them could be difficult.Stick with Xenephon!

Dusty thanks for your help! I am always amazed at how you are able to find all these books! I had a look on the website of my library and I see that they have some books by Amanda Quick. Slightly Shade looks good, will be picking this book up! Unfortunately they do not have the books you mentioned with the letter X. I see that the library has some autobiography books written by Chinese writers, for instance Daughter of China by Meihong Xu.

Are you familiar with www. Project Gutenberg? It has free online books now out of copyright(i.e author has been dead 70 years or more.Loads of classics, old childrens books.etc.I love browsing it.That is where the 8 page Xenephon tale about the death of Socrates is to be found.

I am eying up another reading challenge ,that i saw on a friend's site.Read one book published in each year since your birth. So I would have to read 63 books from 63 years. What a marvellous excuse for rereading old favourites. But I must control myself. My AOTD are now in the upper 50s,and at only about 4 or 5 a month getting read, and anything frm 5 to 10 new ones getting added,I am swimming against the tide. :0(

I use Project Gutenburg for classic books for AOTD in the Booknabbers,so I dont have to buy or order books. This is the way I read Nathaniel Hawthorne,F.Scott Fitzgerald,Edith Wharton,Angela Brazil,Austen's Lady Susan,so it has been handy.

A-Z book reading challenge: still need to read 10 books
Read the alphabet challenge: still need to read 10 books

Did you ever find any X books. If you can sustitute titles beginning with X,it might be slightly easier.Cant you peek at other challengers lists? lol
Edith Wharton wrote a short story called Xingu, its only about 38 pages long on Project Gutenberg, nice and short when you dont have much time!
By the way Nancy,I notice though you are a member of the Booknabbers sister group, you have not made use of it.Are you going to wait for a new year. Its really handy keeping track of lists and plans.I'd be lost without it.How easy it is to forget if and when you read a certain book, but making lists is so helpful

Nancy ,we are crazy.Like you I have joined Christina's 12x12,then there is our Monthly Mini Challenge, our Winter TBR list,my Urban Fantasy group, and my normal Authors of the day.I also instigated science fiction and junior classic read lists for this year.Oh,I can do it,since I read well over 200 books a year, but all the tracking and listing on the tracker threads is going to be very time consuming! lol Less time for reading, more books to list,am I mad.
I have definitely widened my reading scope this year, reducing my UF/PNR and expanding SF and Fantasy, which I have neglected for years/Thought of joining on of those A-Z author challenges, should not be all that difficult, but again that is more posting and tracking.I may have to concentrate all my tracking activity to a Sunday, when there are few people around anyway!

I have decided not to do the 12x12, because I will never read that amount of books in one year. However I have made a list of challenges I am doing this year:
Support your library 2012, level 2 or 3
2012 Bucket list challenge, The mini cooper level or The Mid-sized Sedan level
      Men in uniform, level sergeant
Finishing the Series 2012 Reading Challenge, level 2
Tea & Books (books over 700 pages), level 1 or 2

This year I am also going to make a dent in my own bookshelf. I have over 60 books I have not read it! Want to reduce this to at least 30 books.

Just joined another challenge, monthly mix up mania. To read a book for each letter in the year. That's right, a title for the J in January and the A in January, etc.... 74 books total! End date is March 31 2013. So that will give me some time!

Nancy.I'm nuts. After posting the above,I went off looking for a suitable junior group for my granddaughter to join (she joined shelfari yesterday, that makes 3 family member in it so far!).As I was trawling the lists I saw a group for people who are reading the BBC's Big Reads.Back in about 2002(?) the BBC made a nationwide poll of what people of every sort and age loved to read.A big deal was made of it,I think every school in UK took part, and as a result the list was VERY quirky.Four of the Harry Potters were out then,so they are all there, and kids author Jacqueline Wilson swept the board..But it was a happy list, classics cheek by jowl with all sorts of things from kids to blockbusters.,so there truly was something for everyone - not like that 1001 Books to Read Before You Die,some of those books could kill you off! lol.I had read 49 of the books, and now and again I have read some as I came across them,so it was a delight to find a group reading them-very small,a handful really, but at least it is(barely) alive.Couldnt resist joining, perhaps I might rejuvenate them? ;) .I think there are about 30 books I still have to read, but this year I'll try to read about half a dozen.Folletts Pillars of the Earth,Marquez 100 Years of Solitude, and Watership Down are already on this year's reading list,so I will add Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries,Dahls The BFG,and Jacqueline Wilson's Girls in Love.Leave all the grim stuff for other years!

I remember BBC's Big Read, it was also shown on BBC2, had interviews with authors etc. I think I am going to join the group. I am a huge fan of the chicklits but I have decided for myself to try some different genres. Not sure I will be able to read them all this year. Probably be some books on the list I do not fancy!

Well Crazy Dusty has done it again,Book Concierge from my Boknabbers group put me on to a rather odd group
.Its called Going to the Library, and the admin just wants to put the word Library in among the Top 200 Tags on Shelfari.Very odd ambition, she just appreciates libraries lol.Already the word has appeared in very tiny print.Well,by time I add my 2700 books that I have borrowed from the Library,it should be in big print.I only know 3 of the members, lots of people have only a few books on their shelves, and yet others have 1000s,and we have only a handful in common lol. I love adding books to shelves, and that is all I could do this week, when only my cursor works, but not the letters or space bar! Grrr.I can see everything, and do nothing except add books.Rooted out nearly 70 new books to add to my shelf! :0)
Perhaps I should explain that last sentence.I am in the process of adding all my books to Goodreads.Like all their info, hate their format for discussions, shelfari is a million times better.I am only adding books there because I live in fear that one day shelfari will implode with its technical problems, and all my 2700 book shelf would be lost.I also go on Goodreads just for one former shelfari friend who left us,and I do a weekly chat with her to keep in touch.I am checking out authors on my shelfari shelf, crossing over to GR and checking and clicking on their list for that author.I keep finding that I had forgotten or missed out on perhaps one book per author, but after a couple of sessions I counted 65 books to add to my shelfari shelf! What happened I think when I frist joined shelfari,I would go to a shelf of a major group, and go along just clicking books I had read.Obviously, those shelves didnt have all the books I had read for certain authors,so I am now filling gaps.My shelf is growing again! :)
I do all that sort of thing on a Sunday.I am free for almost 5 hours then, and sadly most of the shelfari members are still in bed,or going out for sunday enjoyment, and there is literally no-one to talk to.So thats when I edit, add books, surf friends shelves etc,and I thoroughly enjoy that, but its a bit lonely.when I am coming off at 7 pm,it is only midday or 2pm in the US,and I have gone to bed before most of you start chatting.I am sure Nancy must find the same thing.

Thanks Nancy,I see the ''library'' tag is well established now, well over 10000 books,so mission accomplished.I wanted to leave the group but the admin is a bit strange. She is moaning that no-one is joining her group,no-one is adding books. And its true that only 32 people joined the group, and it hasnt grown since LOL! I had intended to sneak away after adding a couple of hundred books to the group shelf, but now I would feel guilty as she is saying she would be devastated if the numbers went down.
The trouble is,I think, that apart from the obligation to add to the library tag, there is no particular raison d'etre to the group.I have little in common with them apart from loving libraries. They mostly seem to like true crime, nonfiction,or general fiction and are pretty lukewarm about genre fiction as a whole. They dont read romance, horror or even much UF/PNR.Oh dear! ;0(
That group has settled in a bit now (at end of April),and is very chatty.Membership is up to 50,and it seems to be thriving, but is still not really my cup of tea.I will hang around a few more months, and then when I have finished my 12x12 challenge,I will probably leave.

    57 read -8 to go

.Lot of overlap with other challenges on 12x12,Big Read etc,so the burden is not too great. It will be fun going back to old favourites, which I would otherwise not have made time for.
I never looked at this page for ages.I finished this challenge, though I changed some of the books, and am too lazty to chase them up! lol.But I finished them, quite relieved
Sheena, dont you think you should unpin this thread, and make way for a new one for 2013?

Are you reading the Katie Fforde book this month? She is AOTW next week in not a book club snob group.

I ordered it from the library but it hasnt come in yet.I am usualy far behind with these lists anyway, but I get there in the end lol! What do you think of the state of the Booknabbers lately. It often seems a bit quiet and dull,we really miss Talulah.I got in touch with her and tried to entice her back ,but she is adamant. She's at college now,and her reading is curtailed, and she just doesnt have the time. Its a great pity, her vivacity and humour was so wonderful. She struck sparks off people( Christina is a shadow of herself since she left) and kept discussions going, even if she didnt have a clue about the subject! lol Lauren was sort of roped in probably temporarily as an admin when we thought Talulah was coming back, and she has been very competent, but I miss ditsy Talulah :0( .I loved AOTD,I learned of so many new authors outside my comfort zone, and that is why I am still gamely reading a few a month.I find I have read at least one book by almost all the AOTW.Just as well.I'll be doing them once AOTD are completed, probably in about 15 months?

I noticed it getting quiet in there. Not a lot of people are responding to the posts. I must admit I do not always check the posts on a daily basis anymore. There are a lot books and authors discussed in this group that I have never heard of. I try to get the books from the library so I can join in the discussions but I am not able to get them, because of the fact that my library does not order all the books that are released.

Well,I am just the opposite,I seem to have read at least one book from almost all the authors mentioned ! lol.Under the old AOTD regime,I normally had read about two thirds of the authors, and had between 5 and 10 new authors to add each month.Dont know WHERE Talulah found some of them lol. However, looking back at Jan - March this year, for instance,I am familiar with 19 out of the 27 authors in AOTW,only 8 unreads in three months. It would have been been about 20 odd back in AOTD times!
Still have over 40 AOTD authors to sample,it will be all of this year, then probably half of next to finish them, since I have so many challenges, and can only tackle 2 or 3 AOTD per month. But slow and steady does it. :0)

I have 17 of these here in the house, some of them old favourite romances etc, quite short reads, about 200 pages.I will read all my usual challenge books each month, and if there is time left, read some of these golden oldies. But at the snails pace I am reading,I'll be rarely reading more than 150 pages a day,so its taking 3 to 4 days to complete a book, instead of normal one and a half days

I hadnt checked up on this thread for months1.I was so optomistic, thought I would be finished by end of July, then my eyes went wonky, and so did reading plans. It will probably be the end of November before I finish, because I am still so far behind with the 12x12 challenge, still 17 to read there :(
Author of the Day hasnt fared well either, still have about 30 authors to read.I only manage about one a month! lol.But I'll get there in the end,it will probably take 2 years instead of 18 months :0(
