Finished The First Rule by Robert Crais. Good stuff--you know what you're getting with these mysteries. The Joe Pike ones tend to be a little more violent than the Elvis Cole ones. Good plotting, solid mystery pace with lots of action. And tough guys of course!

I finished Borrower in the Night, a reread for a buddy read on my blog. It's by the wonderful Elizabeth Peters (the Vicky Bliss series.) Oh, how I love this series. I read it 20 or so years ago so I didn't remember the culprit. Loved it. Of course I remembered the characters and that's what reading them is all about!

I'm now reading Mrs. Polifax on the China Station (Dorothy Gilman).

Fun! I love Vicky Bliss, too. And I've read some Mrs Pollifax or listened to the books in the past. Highly enjoyable, especially the first in the series.

I agree, so far the first Mrs. Pollifax was the best. I just checked out Caravan my Dorothy Gilman from the library. It's not a Mrs. Pollifax adventure; just a stand alone. I'm sure it will be fun!

Also got a Christopher Moore book. I haven't tried him yet, but hear he is funny.

Read a hard boiled was called Murder in Store by DC Brod. Decent enough for pulp fiction, but it's hard for me to take seriously. Characters who constantly drink and smoke just sound like they'd be passed out the entire investigation. I mean, if I was going to hire a detective (hard boiled or not) he'd probably refuse to work for me on grounds that the first time he came to report and asked for a "scotch, neat" or "vodka whatever" he'd get nothing but a blank look from me. My offer of "cooking wine?" would probably be turned down, I think. I do use regular chardonnay for cooking, but it does come in a box.

I know it's meant to borrow on the origins of the genre, but I've either read too many or it's just overdone. I also find it a bit hard to believe that a 40 something guy is so irresistible that most of the (dames) women in the book are instantly infatuated or flirtatious. In my world, most 40ish women are not that flirtatious. Well, except for the one lady up the block. LOL.

At any rate, the pacing was extremely well done in this book. Something was always happening, little twists and turns that kept me interested.

Oh--the Kindle formatting was off. Some of the dialogue paragraphs ran together and that was annoying. There were never more than two people "speaking" though so I could follow it. I've tried to read at least one book where there were 3 people talking and it become impossible to tell who is saying what.

If you like pulp fiction, this one was done better than most, I think. Well for the 90s time period. It didn't overuse the cliches and generally only touched on them occasionally. The mystery was good and the characters were enjoyable.

BOCD in the car: THE LAST TEMPTATION: Tony Hill and Carol Jordan Novel #3 - Val McDermid, thriller, CD 6 of 15

Bedside NookBook: WOOL Omnibus - Hugh Howey, dystopian future, book 3 of 5 in this self-published e-book that Ridley Scott has picked up to make into a movie

Purse book: DAEMON EYES - Camille Bacon-Smith, UF, MPB, chap 3

It's been a slow reading month, been full of other schtuff going on and not as much time to read as I'd like. I listened to, and finished, 61. GHOST STORY: Dresden Files - Jim Butcher's latest while on the drive to and from Dad's house in Kansas a couple of weeks ago. Highly excellent book, especially to listen to even though they changed from James Marsters as narrator to John Glover. Once I got used to Mr Glover, which didn't take long, it was all good.
    Also read:
    56. IMMORTALS AND MELODIES: Blood and Guitars #2 - Heather Jensen, UF, e-book
    57. PERFECTLY MATCHED: A Lucy Valentine Mystery #4 - Heather Webber, paranormal cozy, Nook
    58. BLACK BLADE BLUES - J A Pitts, UF, MPB
    59. THE UNQUIET: A Charlie Parker Novel - John Connolly, suspense/thriller, BOCD
    60. EERIE - Blake Crouch and Jordan Crouch, thriller, e-book

Totally agree. I could never get into her Nora Roberts (her other name) books, but I loved the JD Robb series, especially the first 3 or 4. Great characters, great setting. Lots of fun.

Today I finished Bury Your Dead, by Louise Penny. I gave this book 5 stars - beautifully written, but you really need to read the prior books first. One plot re-investigates a murder from a prior book, a second concerns the murder of a man obsessed with finding the grave of the founder of Quebec, and the third plot is built around flashbacks to a traumatic event that happens BETWEEN this book and the one immediately before it. I was a bit confused about that at the beginning but Louise Penny is masterful in tying everything together...while leaving a few questions open for the next time. Can't wait to buy and read the next in this series.
