My favorite Cherryh is The Faded Sun Trilogy (the one about the Mri). In fact, my mom and I agree that that trilogy (which we read in the omnibus volume they published a few years ago) is one of the best, most impressive works we've read by any author in quite a few years. I'm not saying it's perfect, but a great many of Cherryh's themes are developed through it (the centrality of language to understanding is my favorite) and I think because it is one of her earlier works, the emotions are a bit more raw while escaping melodrama. After that, I'd say my next favorite would be Hammerfall. (If you notice, I have a preference for desert planets.) :)
As for other SF/Fantasy female author favorites, I've started groups for Lois McMaster Bujold and Robin McKinley and I also belong to the Jacqueline Carey and Marion Zimmer Bradley groups, so that gives you a sense of my likes and dislikes. Beyond that, I'm also a huge fan of Patricia McKillip and Connie Willis; I have a soft spot in my heart for Anne McCaffrey and Madeline L'Engle (early teen loves); and I am getting into Elizabeth Bear.
