I'm new to the group, and thank Silvana for the kind invitation. It looks like a lively, informed, and well-read bunch, and I look forward to keeping up with all the action.
My love of books started early; I greatly enjoyed being read to as a child. I truly don't remember learning to read myself. I just know I was already doing so at five when I started 1st grade.
I am a freelance editorial consultant living in the SF Bay Area, transplanted from a lifetime on the East Coast (most recently the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western NC). My specialty is quilting and other fiber-related craft books. I've been a quilter myself for over 25 years, focusing these days mostly on fabric collage. I'm recently (re)married and "bonus mom" to an almost-16-year-old stepson, who lives with us half time. Quite a change for me, but one that I embrace.
I read about 150 books a year; my taste is fairly eclectic. I enjoy literary fiction (including the classics), historical fiction, and non-fiction (including bios, autobiographies, and memoirs; art and books on creativity; and the occasional book about sports). I love reading about other cultures, and am particularly interested in books about Asia, particularly China. In the history department, I am a "student" of the Plantagenet and Tudor periods in England, and--more recently--the Western migration in the US. I rarely read chick lit (I hate that term!), sci-fi, or fantasy. Sometimes I think I am the only person in the world who has never read a single Harry Potter book!
Besides reading, I am a huge baseball fan. (I've been a Yankee fan all my life!) I am also a big college basketball fan, and like to--don't laugh!--watch golf. (Tried playing, totally stink!) For physical activity, I enjoying walking and yoga. Music has played a big role in my life, although I am not singing with anyone at the moment...maybe soon.
That's it: probably more than you want or need to know! In any event, thanks for having me.
