I read this book not too long ago and loved it, so I thought I would mention it here.
Tamora Pierce - Beka Cooper Book 1 (Terrier)
I have to admit that I haven't been reading Tamora Pierce's lateest books. I loved the Alanna series, and many others, but the Circle of Magic just didn't do anything for me, and I stopped paying attention, figuring her best work was over.
This book changed my mind. Beka Cooper is a compelling story that kept me turning pages furiously. The characters are well thought out and enjoyable, especially our strong female lead. Beka is fierce and dogged (as you might guess from the title), but also touchingly real in her adolescent struggles.
There is some violence and mild sexual content which make the book inappropriate for the youngest readers, but I enthusiasticly recommend it to all lovers of great fantasy.
