In my mind, they are right alongside Jane Austen. I know the subject of one is light, careful social satire and the others write epic, melodramatic portrayals of the trials of love. Still, all have created depictions of women and love that are truthful and inspirational, even 200 years after the fact. The situations of these women are far estranged from our own- their stories are embedded in etiquette, customs and social mores which are foreign to us. But this fact only strengthens the impact they have on us. We are conscious that they were written for a different place and time- and this makes us realize that they are transcendent, universal. The struggles the heroines go through are so poignant it makes us grateful for the security of our own lives. Yet, a part of us longs to be tested, to see if we would bear it with the poise and bravery that they do.
