The Challenged Reader

The Challenged Reader is a group for people who have so many books waiting to be read, they need a challenge or two to make a dent in their TBR. Join us before your bookshelf collapses!

    Pages for Pounds

    Save Changes Cancel

That's right, it's our very first challenge!

Is your TBR overflowing off your shelves? Have you vowed not to buy any books until you read the ones you already own? Did you just receive a lot of books over the holidays? Or maybe, like me, you just have page after page after page of books on your shelfari "Plans to Read" list. If you consider your TBR pile or list to be "overweight" this challenge is for you!*

Pages for Pounds is a fairly basic challenge. It's quite simple:

    1. Take the books on your TBR list
    2. Read them
    3. Weigh the book using a kitchen scale or go to amazon.com and check the shipping weight.
    4. Twice a month report the amount of weight you've read
    5. At the end of the challenge see how much weight you've taken off your TBR pile!

    See? Fairly simple.

You don't need to sign up for this challenge. You may join at any time. Pages for Pounds officially starts on January 1, 2009 and will end on February 28, 2009. The official winner is the member of The Challenged Reader who has lost the most weight during the challenge. Even if you aren't declared the winner you're still a winner to have tackled some weight from your TBR!

Throughout the challenge there may be occasional opportunities to lose some extra weight. I won't tell you how just yet, but you'll find out when these opportunities arise.

There will be check-ins twice a month to report your progress and for the admins. to tally up the pounds. Only report the books that are finished. If you're still reading a book save it until the next check-in. All books count. There isn't any specific criteria just read what you want to read and what's already on your TBR (or any new books you can't possible refrain from adding to your TBR). Since you don't need to sign up for this challenge whenever you join just post your results at the next check-in.

Please report the weight of the actual edition you read. If you read a hardback you can report the weight of the hardpack. If it's a paperback, or mass market edition report the weight of those particular books. Audiobooks count as well. For audiobooks the weight is the weight of the audibook itself. You can weight the audiobook in the case or use amazon.com. During the check-ins post if it was a hardback, paperback, mass market, audiobook, or electronic reader edition.

If you would like to keep a log of the books you read during this challenge you may do so. Just create a discussion with the title "(Your Name or Username)'s Pages for Pounds Log). You do not have to keep a log if you do not want to. Since all books qualify for this challenge and there won't be additional bonuses for reading certain books that wouldn't count previously, you don't have to keep a log, but anyone who wants to is encouraged to post one. As members post their results at the weigh-ins you'll be able to see all the books that everyone has read.

There won't be any prizes given to the winner, but you will receive bragging rights and if you have a blog or a webpage a special graphic to show off your dedication to reducing your TBR.

Any questions? Feel free to let us know!

    EDITED on 12/31/08:

If you do NOT finish a book that you start during this challenge you may receive credit for it. After you have officially given up on the book post it at the next check-in. You didn't finish the book, but you did knock it off your TBR so it still counts. Just be sure to let us know at the weigh-in that it was unread. This is another way to lose a lot of weight! It's a good time to clean up those shelves and chuck the books you realize you no longer want to read. Unfinished books won't receive the full weight amount, but the percentage of the weight that you did read. If you read a quarter of a book you'll receive a quarter of the weight. Hey, that's still weight knocked off your TBR!

    * Even if you don't consider your shelf or list to be overweight and, unlike a lot of us, are able to refrain from buying books that consume all your space, you may still participate in all the fun. =P

Do you have to report poundage of any new books that you may add to your TBR during that time? Thus your final total would be all you read minus what you added. After all, this is to reduce your TBR.

I can't imagine that I can go a whole month without adding any books to my TBR. I'll probably gain by the end of the month no matter how much I read!!

You don't need to know the amount your current TBR weighs when you begin the challenge. Nor do you need to add the weight of any books you add. There's no penalty for adding books during the challenge. I'm sure some of us will be adding quite a few books once we see what others have reported.

I have a couple books on my next to read list that don't have their editions on Shelfari (one is a copy of Julius Caesar from the 1920's, so it doesn't have an ISBN)...how do I count those? Do I just pick an edition from Shelfari and go with that?

In a situation like that I would choose an edition fairly similar to the one you own. For example if it's a hardback choose a hardback that looks close to the same size. Or, if you have a kitchen scale you can use that, but I'm not sure how many people own those. I don't have one.

I am excited for this challenge; I love that it is very flexible and will allow me to really get the books off the TBR pile :)

I read all (about 98%) of my books on my kindle so how would you like me to report the weight? Should I just look up a reasonable edition on Amazon and check the shipping weight there?

Thanks again for committing to this group after RIT ended, I am really looking forward to seeing what y'all have in store for us :)

Aha! You found something the other admins. and I had not thought of - kindle editions! Which, by the way, certainly do count, we just hadn't thought of. I will check with them and get back with you.

Okay, for books read on Kindle, or any other electronic reader, we decided to use the mass market paperback edition (or if it's only available in regular paperback, then that one). We decided that since both electronic readers and mass markets are easily carried around those would count the same.

Sorry that I have all of these questions but I often read books that aren't available yet in paperback (for example, I recently downloaded the new Patricia Cornwell book, Scarpetta which is only available in hardback). If I read something that is only available in hardback then should I record that weight?

Yes, if there is something only available in hardback that's fine. Don't worry about questions there is always something that we're sure to overlook or not to think of! Someone else may have the same question as you.

I love my kindle with a passion I have never experienced! LOL It is the best thing I have ever owned and I carry it everywhere with me :) I think I mentioned elsewhere that I am a total kindle snob now and have shunned my regular books because they just aren't as convenient! Not only that, but I actively promote the kindle...I was at lunch by myself the other day and was reading a couple chapters while waiting for my food - I ended up giving a little demo to about 7 people and 2 of them left saying they were definitely going to purchase one!

      Kindle Pimp!

I regularly eat in a local Italian Restaurant near my house. I've been going there with the family for 10 years and know all the staff. When my husband is out of town and my girls are busy I will often go there by myself to eat. For years I always went with a book, and would chat with the 'girls' about books. The first time I went with my Kindle they were all coming over to check it out, and bringing it to the kitchen to show everyone, even the counter boys were fascinated by it. When Oprah had her show on featuring the Kindle, I happened to go to the restaurant that night. One of the wait staff, Judy, came over to me and said she was watching it and said 'Oprah where have you been Linda had that Kindle in January!'

      LOL!

BTW- New Year's Resolution - absolutely no new book purchases unless they are available on the Kindle!

I think the only reason I haven't bought a Kindle or any other electronic reader is because I get most of my books from the library. If there was a virtual library for the Kindle without having to purchase the books I'd probably buy one. That really is the only thing stopping me.

I agree, I haven't bought a book in ages because of the library. If I did purchase books for myself (I do purchase books for the library), I would feel compelled to share them! I don't think you can share a kindle book without giving up the kindle itself.

There are some sites where you can download books on your Kindle for free but I have found that there are limited options. The books you buy on the kindle though are much less expensive than new from the bookstore!

I've been getting similar reactions with my Sony reader, but the problem is first it's not available in my country so you have to get it online, second it only supports English language and most of the people around me are not that good in English or not interested in reading altogether, third we don't have a public library in my city (amazing isn't it) it was planned to be built about 20 years ago and we are still waiting, there is one in the university but that is for staff and students only and you would never find any new English novels there, plus I'm neither a student nor staff so my choices are limited. Forth it's kinda nice to be using a device that no one knows what it is, they think I'm working or studying LOL, makes you look sophisticated ;) so for the ones who ask I give them the tour.

I'm considering getting the new Sony this year but maybe not right now, I'll just wait for any bugs to resurface :) or I might get a Kindle to have something different :) I love gadgets !!

I'll check with the other two admins. about this as well and get back to you. My first thought would be to use the weight of the audiobook on amazon, but I'll check and get their opinions first. I usually check out audiobooks from the library and then put them on my iPod and I would count the weight on Amazon. I'll get back with you.

Not a problem. You can read books you own, borrow from a friend or library, read them on Kindle, listen to an audiobook, or even purchase them. I know some people have lists of books they want to read and then go buy them or borrow them from the library. That's perfectly fine. I work at a library so I'm able to refrain from buying most books since I know I can easily borrow them from one of the libraries. =)

For this challenge you can read anything and claim credit for it - just as long as you read or listen/read the material.

I'll be doing the adding up for everyone, and although I work in kilos and grammes in daily life, I'm sure I'll work it all out. And if I go wrong, it'll be wrong for everyone, so it should end up alright (only joking)!

So, put down what you want, just make sure it's clear whether it's imperial (lbs, ounces) or metric (kilos, grammes). And remember, a pound can be an lbs or 500 grammes, so please make clear which pound you mean. An ounce is usually 1/16th of a pound, but an ounce is also 100 grammes, I think. Well, anyway, make sure it's clear!

I will assume we're talking lbs mainly, so be very clear if you're using the metric system.

Tenia, I would just keep it listed at 13.8 oz until I read something else that allowed me to convert it into pounds. For instance, say I read a book that was 13.8 oz, followed by a book that was 1 lb, followed by a book that was 6 oz. I would list list my totals something like this:

      Book 1 - 13.8 oz
      Book 2 - 1 lb
      Book 3 - 6 oz.

      subtotal - 1 lb 19.8oz
      Total - 2 lb 3.8oz

Does that make sense to you? It's the way I plan on listing mine, although I may just do the math and not list the subtotal.

I'll be happy to add up your totals, so when you report the books, it's fine to just use the per-book weights in oz. I'll add it all up to a total in pounds.

Like kairilily and JudithAnn have mentioned just post each books individual weight. At the end you can total up the amount, but JudithAnn is recording all the information about weight so if you make a mistake, or are terrible at math (such as myself), she can fix it for you. =)

    Tenia,

I'm awful at math, too, but google's search engine has a calculator function that will do conversions for you. All you have to do is type in 13.8 oz = ? lbs into the search box on google's main page, and the search result will tell you 13.8 ounces = 0.8625 pounds. It also works for converting other types of measurements.

I got some books that I've started last Dec. before I knew about this challenge. Say I'm already half-way through one of the books, should I only count in the weight of half of the book for this challenge? Or do I weigh it as a whole? Would it be better if I not include that book and only the ones I am to start reading this year?

Go ahead and count them. You're reading them during the challenge so we'll count that as weight lost from your TBR.

Pawdough, see also the rules at the top. If you do not finish a book during the challenge, you can count the percentage that you've read. This also works the other way around: if you did not start the book during the challenge, but you finish it now, you can count the percentage that you finished.

So, in your case, if you were half-way the book before the challenge, you can use half of the weight (since you read the other half during the challenge). If you've read 75% of the book before the challenge, you can count the other 25% for the first check-in.

I tried checking shipping weight at Amazon, but all I came up with was shipping cost. Is there a trick to this that I missed?

Judith, look below the Editorial reviews, it's in Product Details. So, not in the top section, where the price etc. is given. Scroll down a bit. Hopefully you can see it then.

I, too, had trouble finding weight on Amazon. Mostly I could only find paperback weights and I was looking for a hardcover weight. It didn't list it anywhere. It's not always under Product Details, apparently.

Coloreader, are there other book sellers online that you could check? I thought amazon would always give the weight. I wonder why not.

What titles are you looking for? Maybe I can find the weight online and if not I can try checking to see if we have the titles in hardcover at the library. Since I work there it wouldn't be too difficult to see if we have the hardcovers if I can't find the weight anywhere online.

I think I made a big mistake. I started on a heavy book for this challenge and now I realize it may be taking up too many days! But, I'm loving the book! Arrgghh...

Well, the challenge runs for 2 months, so I'm sure you'll be finished in that time. Or is the book huuuuuuge? You can also report the percentage that you've read. So, which ever way, it'll all be OK in the end! :-)

I guess it's all about strategy. The heavier books will be worth more in the end, but if it takes too long to read, it's not really worth it if you could read a whole bunch of smaller books to add up to a bigger weight. I think the strategy depends on the person.

I'm reading the hardcover of Wally Lamb's I Know This Much Is True. I haven't found a reliable weight for this yet. I found one that said 1.6 lb, but that was also what they listed for the softcover. It sure feels heavier when I'm trying to hold it to read in bed! This one is huge, JudithAnn. Over 800 pg.

Oh yes, hardcover aren't always easy to hold! I've got one waiting that is well over 2 pounds, more like 3. But I'll only be able to read it sitting on the sofa, can't take it on the train, or read it in bed.

Maybe you can find a similar book and check its weight?

I am using the Amazon mailing weight for the books I read. They may not be totally accurate, but I am going to always use them so I am consistent. Do you have a digital bathroom scale? Mine weighs in incriments of 1/2 pounds, but my parents digital bathroom scale weighs in tenths of a pound. If I had their scale I would use it.

I do have a digital scale, but it doesn't seem to weigh anything that light. I can't even weigh the cats unless I hold them! And--GO STEELERS!!

I'll check around and see if I can find some other weights and ask you if any of them seem about right.

If you can't find it, I have the hardcover version of the book and I'm willing to take it to work with me Monday and weigh it on the shipping scale.

I have the trade paperback version of this book- 897 pages- and it weighs 1 lb. 12 ozs- so that 1lb 6 ozs seems off by a bit!

Yea, I've found Amazon to be off on their weights. I don't know how they calculate them.

I haven't had any success at finding the weight, so kairily if you don't mind weighing it at work, that would be great!

Ok. I'll lay the book out with my purse right now so I can take it with me tomorrow. I didn't think about it this morning.

Thanks so much kairily for doing this! I apprecaite it!

I saw this copy at work yesterday, but I don't have a scale so I felt useless. =(

No problem! I always take a book to work with me anyway just in case I have downtime to read. I haven't had the opportunity to read at work for awhile though, but just in case, I'm always prepared!

I'm doing a challenge very similar to this on PBS. Divide the ounces by 16 and you will get the lbs. Use a calculator.

Here is a site that I use. http://www.calculateme.com/Weight/Ounces/ToPounds.htm

    So, 13.8 oz =0.8625 Pounds

I am using the Amazon weight information. I don't have any kind of scale in my house. Is this going to be a problem if I can't check the book against what Amazon is saying?

No, we'll take the Amazon weight as correct (as we have no other means of checking). Don't worry, it seems sometimes Amazon is not quite correct with their weights, but let's assume on average it'll work out OK.

Thank you for letting me know. I was afraid I was going to have to steal a scale from my Mother's house. LOL

Not a problem. We'll assume Amazon is right unless someone tells us they really find it hard to believe a book is the weight listed there.
