Excellent. I'm going to first look through my pile of library books at home, and then will see what I can find. Ideally I can find one to fit another challenge (I have a few here & a few on a different online reading group I've been in for a few years and we have a number of challenges going, but don't have to do them all.)

Also, how do you get the random letters? This is a tough set due to only one regular vowel & a y.

Yep, it's definitely a tough set. I drew out of my scrabble bag of letters - it's my damnable luck, is what's wrong! lol

With my luck at Scrabble it would have been all consonants or all vowels.

I would have had all vowels! I play words w/friends and I have 4 games w/all vowels!

Well, there's always ai, which is a kind of sloth, so there would be at least one word we could actually make with all vowels!

Also, we can only use each letter one in a word, correct? Also, graphic novels, are they out the same as picture books? With words like the longer ones here, some of the pickings are slim.

Karin, we are reading books with first word in title starting with each of the letter in your chosen word. So say if I choose Handy, I'd be reading the following books:

(The) Happiest Refugee by Anh Do
      Avalanche by Jack Drummond
      Nevermore by James Patterson
Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
(The) Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon

"The" is in brackets because we are ignoring the, a, & an. See how the first letter of first words of title put together spells Handy?

I'm a bit slow to catch on, no? Here I went and actually found a novel wher the first word in the title is Handy and thought I was so clever (there's only one that I could find in my Google search) because I'd get so many points. I'd seen something like this, but that is so much easier than what I was going to do.

I read much more carefully in print than I do on a screen, which is one of the reasons I'm not likely to get an ereader.

So, I'm going to get going on this & tie it in to the other things I'm reading. If I try for Handy & fall short & can still spell Hand. I did come up with a few other 3 letter words, too, not on the list.

If you didn't get a vowel, would you have thrown the letters back in the bag & drawn again? What happens if you get a blank?

If I couldn't make up a word at all then I'd draw the whole lot again and I'd just draw an extra one to replace the blank :)

We certainly aren't going to not give you letters with no vowels!

Love the Chabon book! Read it several years ago. Interesting premise.

Okay, I'm having fun as I found several books in my to be read pile that have first words starting with those letters. How about unabridged recordings of books? Are those fair game, or only books in print? I'm of to work on my tag challenge now.

Actually, I checked & I saw that audio books are allowed, just no picture books, which makes sense as it would be too easy to read a lot of them.

So, has anyone else completed any words? I'm bumping this since it gets lost if no one posts.

Don't worry about bumping up, Karin, as it's pinned on top :)

Thanks for the thought though ;)

I've been so busy at work that I just couldn't face the computer anymore when I get home so I've only gotten around to tallying up what I've read...

I've basically checked out what I've read last month that coincided with these letters and made my own words (which happened to be in the scrabble dictionary) - why I didn't came across these words when setting this thread up, who knows?!

H: The House of Velvet and Glass
    A: The Aunt’s Story
F: Far from the Madding Crowd
T: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

    Word Value: 10
    Finder's Fee: 10
    Total: 20 points

    H: The Honey Flow
    A: Avalanche
H: The Happiest Refugee: A Memoir

    Word Value: 9
    Finder's Fee: 9
    Total: 18 points

    Total this month: 38 points
    Total last month: 21 points
    Grand Total: 59 points

Not bad - considering I read according to my other challenges rather than this *oops*

Good round. By bumping, I meant bumping the group off of my second page of groups.

I didn't read any books that began with A (unless you'll count the first word in a subtitle: John Tyler: The Accidental President), so no points for me for February. Hopefully March will be better!
