I consider classics to be books that leave an impression on you. Not always, but tend to reflect waht is going on in life around the author at the time of writing. Most classics will help you learn more about the world, life, culutre, people, and mostly... yourself. For Example: anything by Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters, Shakespeare, F. Scott Fitzgerald, etc.
But I also believe that the discription can include fantasy and sci-fi, like Lord of the rings, the Chronicles of Narnia series, Lord of the Flies, etc. Because we think in those far out ideas and use the "what if" ideas to help us progress with technology and the way we move forward in life.... space shuttles, cars, the current medical field technology. Those ideas help mold our way of thinking out side the box too.
so, as long as it can relate to more than half the population and written over 50 years from the present, it can be considered "classic"
at least, this is my opinion!
