Or maybe it's something to do with copyright law?

Although a lot of US tv shows post episodes to their websites, here in Canada we can't watch them. I assumed it was some kind of copyright thing - maybe it's the same for the videos and ebooks?

    R.I.P - Ray Bradbury

Ray Bradbury died June 5, 2012 at the age of 91.

    From Wikipedia
Ray Douglas Bradbury (August 22, 1920 – June 5, 2012) was an American fantasy, horror, science fiction, and mystery writer. Best known for his dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 (1953) and for the science fiction stories gathered together as The Martian Chronicles (1950) and The Illustrated Man (1951), Bradbury was one of the most celebrated among 20th century American writers of speculative fiction. Many of Bradbury's works have been adapted into television shows or films.

    I am in mourning.

    Helloooo! :)
    How's everybody doing?
It's my school holidays at the moment, which is very fabulous. In the last week of school I picked up some books from the city library, which was having a rare book sale - I got four for $4 so I was pretty chuffed about that! Other than that, I've been ice skating - fell over and injured myself, well done Katy - done heaps of study for upcoming exams... Oh, and got a dog. He's called Shandy. And he's lovely. :)
It's been a pretty interesting winter over here so far - we've had masses of fog, torrential downpours resulting in floods, frost, and then days like today - brilliantly sunny. Good one Auckland. How's everyone's summer going?

Summer is going good. Got a huge storm that dropped baseball size hail twenty minutes out of town and golf ball size hail around my house. I was at work and the wind/rain/hail was so thick that we could not see the cars in our parking lot. Everything was green, which is a sign of tornadoes. Which we ended up having five tornadoes within an hour an a half of our town. One was 45 from our house (McMahon), another was an hour (Val Marie), two an hour and half away (between Chaplin and Moose Jaw), and another by Hodgeville (not sure how far away that is). I love storms but that one freaked me out a little. We had storm chasers following it. Glad we did not get hit by any of the tornadoes. Another storm this week that hit north of us and dropped three tornadoes. Now we are getting beautiful sunshine and heat. Finally done with the rain.
That being said now I have allergies hitting me, and a child who is teething. Other than that great summer. Just working, working, working.

Hodgeville's about 45 minutes or so from Swift Current. Wow, there was a tornado at McMahon? That's where my dad grew up. I'd heard about one just south of Moose Jaw a couple of weeks ago, and one near Coderre (about 30 minutes from the town I grew up in).

Nice to see you back, Katy and congrats on the new dog! (Really, to comment on your comment above, I can't wait to hear where you'll be on your trip to Canada! If you are in/near Calgary (about an hour from the Rockies), that's where I am. If you're dad is o.k. with it, I'd love to meet up with you and him.

    Hello my Shelfari friends!!

It has certainly been a while! I hope everyone is doing well and cheering like mad for the Olympic teams?

I'm on "summer" at the moment which really means, since I've graduated with a bachelors and all, that I'm biding my time as I "prepare" to research schools for a Master's degree. :] Of course, that being said, I have signed up for extra classes for Fall because I am such a nerd. I can't remember when I was last on so I'll detail my biblio-escapades here for all to see. This year at Comic Con San Diego, my friend and I set our focus on the publishing booths and snagged roughly 30 novels each for reading. Hooray for promotional books and ARCs! I also met and had a few books signed by wonderful up and coming authors.

Before that, I stumbled across the first American Edition of John Fowles' The Collector at a local used book store and was ingeniously talked into buying it. It's now sitting on my shelf in a zip-loc baggie looking smug.

All in all thing's are going fair over here. And hopefully more fair as I kick myself into gear and get to work!

On another note Tony, I may have inexplicably fallen head first into the depths of hockey with no real chance of climbing out.

Looks like we're finally getting a heat wave here in Southern California. Though I will say it's about time, heat waves make me want to lounge on the floor and do absolutely nothing except maybe complain.

    How's everyone else doing?

Hockey: hoorah! I've been following the NZ hockey teams at the Olympics and feeling pretty proud to be a kiwi... shame about our women's loss last night, not sure how the men did...

It's the depths of winter here. I quite like it. :) But no doubt in six months' time I'll be lying on the floor complaining about the heat and humidity.

Anyways, I'm about to endeavor to buy tickets to an Ed Sheeran concert that go on sale in ten mins, so byeee :)

      Thanks Tony!
I'm still getting acquainted with the teams so I can't say I've sold my soul for any just yet, but I was cheering on the Kings for the cup this season and I have a friend who is a big Penguins fan. I like to watch her glare at fans of rival teams :]

Bella, the weather must be crazy in New York! I hope you're keeping cool! We haven't had anything as hot as the east coast yet, but I may be speaking too soon.

it's supposed to get hotter here, and I've had to time my computer usage so the heat from electronics won't turn my room into an oven. :\ An improvement from the past few years is that our internet router isn't over heating anymore! I used to have to climb up to the attic, turn the thing off, let it cool down, help it along with ice packs (because I'm impatient), and then reboot the whole system various times a day. It's funny the things we do to stay cool. Once it starts to get hot here, I start to strategically find the most effective times to open my window to take advantage of cool air outside and keeping my windows shut for the cool insulated air. I also learn which stores and places have the best air conditioning. I don't even know if it's actually helping.

Sorry Katy! I should have been more specific! I've been sort of keeping up with field hockey during the Olympics as well. Watching all that running in summer weather makes me tired :] So in comparing the two, every time I watch field hockey I think the teams need longer hockey sticks and better protection in terms of helmets and gear. It's an interesting game!

Oh and thank you for the re-welcome! :] I haven't been here in a while but I certainly haven't forgotten about all of you! Passing thoughts about how my "Shelfari friends" are doing go through my mind quite often!

Your team knocked my injury-suffering team out in the first round. I am a Vancouver fan, as that is where I am originally from. Once LA knocked my team out, I was cheering on the Kings all the way, love to see the underdog teams giving the best teams so much trouble. It was two low standing teams that ended up getting to the finals and the Kings ended up winning. Very exciting considering they have never won a cup before.

Oh yes, and it made the series that much more exciting. It was a little difficult keeping up with the games over here since they don't always air it on broadcast television. Luckily my friend has a way with the internet and we were able to stream the ones we nearly missed! What do you think about the potential lockout situation?

It is going to be a lockout. They are so far apart that they will never come to terms before deadline. It is fine with me if they have a lockout until mid-December as then my favorite player will be fully recovered from his shoulder surgery. Otherwise he misses they first few months.

Not Catholic but found it funny how they made such a big deal about how this pope doesn't like being pampered, he wants to be as normal as possible. Shouldn't it have been that way always? Did Jesus live a pampered life? Do they really think He would approve of his representatives being idolized and pampered? Not trying to step on toes, but this Pope may be what the Catholic church needs to bring people back to faith and religion. People want someone they can relate and connect with, not someone they view as too far above them. Again not trying to step on toes, just saying this Pope seems great.

I'm really glad to see that he is much more "pastoral" ... the Church needs to get back to the people ... and am also glad to see that he is a Jesuit (scholarship). I hate the clutter of the new "groups list" infor ... do I really need to know "you are a member of this group (leave group)" .. would the group be on MY group list if I were not a member?

Also hate having that annoying "click box" for "notify me of new posts" ... It's available on each group thread, so why have it on the main list?

To mean this just clutters up the list with unnecessary and repetitive information

I don't, however, like the changes on the groups page. It's very messy and hard to read which groups have new messages.

So, I was at a F2F book club meeting last night at a local cafe. We've been meeting there since it first opened last summer and have always had the "back" to ourselves. EXCEPT, now they finally got their beer/wine license and the population has exploded. There were four other tables occupied in the back when I arrived, though I was still able to snag the large "reserved for parties of 5 or more" table.

Anyway ... we were discussing Kindred and a couple of our group had real troubles with the time travel aspect. I started commenting about Stephen King's 11/22/63 and comparing his way of handling this with Butler's. NONE of my book club buddies realized King wrote anything that isn't horror (i.e. vampires, ghosts, demons...). So, we finish our discussion and are walking out when we pass one of the other tables ... a book club discussing ... 11/22/63! I stopped by for a moment and they shared their handout on King's body of work with me. If I didn't already have a book club meeting on the 3d Tuesday, I'd ask to join theirs.

I would be kind of annoyed by losing a nice quiet spot. Hate places that get to loud, you can't have a good conersation.

My book club is through our community association, so we meet at the hall. However, for a social event just after Christmas, we went to a local (very popular) restaurant. However, the nice part about it is that they have a separate room you can reserve, so we were able to get that. Has its own door, so we could shut the door to keep out the outside conversations.

It was fun to go out for a change.

Well, this month it was back to being a relatively quiet location ... only one other table in the back was occupied. Guess last month was busy because of the "newness" of the experience.

    Is it SPRING yet?

For me I don't count it as Spring until I see a red-wind blackbird, and I've yet to see one. The cardinals and chicadees and robins are busy calling to each other however. Don't need to set an alarm ... I have a "natural" wake-up call at about 5:00a-5:30a every morning!
