Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books and the first novel I've read. I watched the 1996 movie adaptation and I was very disappointed.

I don't think I have seen that one. I recently watched the BBC 2006 version... it was good but they made Jane a little more forward with her feelings with Rochester than I would have liked... not because i dont agree with that sort of thing but it didn't seem in tune with her characteristics...

I have only seen the version of JANE EYRE featuring William Hurt. Call me shallow, but I couldn't get past Jane's teeth. I seem to remember them being horridly yellow and just...ugh. I also think it's difficult to put JANE EYRE onscreen. A lot of historical novels translate well, but Jane is so internal, if that makes sense. It's hard to truly convey her inner narration on a movie screen.

My favorite Jane Eyre adaptation is the 1997 A & E version featuring Cirian Hinds and Samantha Morton. I think it is by far the best done...I have seen all the versions I have been able to come across and I simply love this one. Cirian Hinds has become Edward Rochester in my mind much the way that Colin Firth will forever remain Mr. Darcy....Try it if you have not seen it...it is worth the price even if you have to purchase it. I watch it a few times a year.

Yes, yes, yes! The 1997 version with Samantha Morton is fabulous - almost as good as the book! I've watched only once, but look forward watching every few years. Yes, Cirian Hinds (also brilliant in "THe Mayor of Casteridge") is the definitive Rochester (I also concur on your assessment of Colin Firth - another fabulous adaptation). Thank you A&E and Masterpiece Theater!!! I don't know what I'd do without them (maybe read more books!?)!

Have you seen the film version of "Tenant of Wildfell Hall"? I LOVE the book and, unfortunately, the OMaha library system does not own it, nor is it at the local video-rental stores, but the IMBD review is excellent. I may be forced to join Netflix to access it . . .

I agree with Alethea... I was watching the recent adaptation of Jane Eyre and I noticed how a lot of the time she was way too forward with her feelings. In the book she is made out to be shy and afraid to show her feelings... (I think!) but in the movie she is just woo-hoo out in the open, and mr. rochester isn't how i pictured him, his hair was black and his beard was brown... that bugged me so much throughout the whole movie arggh!
but it was a good adaptation... they got it pretty close to the book. not perfect but good

Has anyone seen a BBC version of Jane Eyre with Timothy Dalton? It's an older version but, he was a wonderful Mr. Rochester.

I think it is possible to make a good film with classics if only the makers do not think taking liberties of all sorts is ok and proceed to do so. Colin Firth P&P was very good in all details except the two girls, Elizabeth should be lively but not so smack in your face beautiful especially not more so than Jane, while Jane should be dazzling beauty beyond all doubts with a calm - and Elizabeth a lively one that grows on you with her intelligence. I found the Emma Thompson - Hugh Grant - Kate Winslet film version of S&S almost perfect even with the liberties they took for cinematic effect, while the book read after is more realistic and down to earth. It should be quite possible to make a good film with Jane Eyre, more difficult with Wuthering Heights.

My favorite version of Jane Eyre has John Hurt as Mr. Rochester and Charlotte Gainbourg as Jane. Anna Paquin played young Jane. I found it an almost flawless version. When I attempted to watch a new version on PBS, I had to shut it off.

To the one comment about Jane and her quietness. Through the book she is quiet except where she sees injustice. As a young girl she back talked to Mrs Reed and got sent off to Lowood school. There she fought back on behalf of her sickly friend. So, she may be quiet, but she is not afraid to speak out when she wants to.

I, too, loved the William Hurt/Charlotte Gainsbourg 1996 version. I thought it was about perfect in all respects. I also think Nina's comment, above, is totally spot-on about Jane's spirit and adherence to her principles. I have to think that Jane's admirable trait of defending the down-trodden is an autobiographical nod to herself and her own beliefs.

I am actually trying to collect them all. The first adaptation I watched was with Orson Wells and Joan Fontaine. My most favorite is the unedited version of the one starringTimothy Dalton and Zelah Clark. BBC is also coming out with another version starring Ellen Page.

I've seen them all, and the best in from 1997 with Samantha Morton and Ciaran Hinds! Also has Gemma Jones from the most delightful, Duchess of Duke Street.

This is my favourite book ever! I have seen quite a few adaptations - my favourite versions are the BBC version with Timothy Dalton; he was a great Mr Rochester, and in my opinion this version is the most faithul to the text, that I have seen so far. I also love the BBC 2006 version with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. Ruth is my favourite Jane so far and I thought that the passion and love between Jane and Mr Rochester was portrayed brilliantly. I am also looking forward to seeing the new movie version which I think is out some time this year!
