I think nearly everyone has had to cut back on spending this year. My siblings hit me up to share the expense for a gift for my father. That was okay. Mom has an old aluminum stove top fryer that is developing a hole in the bottom - big fire hazard. She was telling my sister, Barbara, about this and then Barbara talked to me. She wasn't planning on getting Mom anything for Xmas but since she contributed to Dad's gift she felt obligatied to buy something for Mom. Mom told her she was so disappointed because you can't buy these stove top fryers anymore. Mom only checked local stores; she has no comprehension of the internet. LOL Even when my parents were in the thirties and forties we called them The Flintstones. LOL They are still pretty much in that era! (snort snort)
Barbara found one on line made out of stainless steel - so much better!!! It was only around $30.00. Mom will be thrilled. Fried Chicken is always a special treat for them and my brother, Allen, who still lives at home. Mom literally won't believe her eyes. LOL
The only other thing I purchased is for my downstairs neighbor and friend. He likes to burn incense and candles. I bought him one of those electric tart burners and some Christmas tree scented oil to burn in it. The tart burner was only $16.00 and some change. I have one and I loooooove it. The oil stays fresh for days and permeates the entire apartment - well, the apartment isn't that big but that is irrelivant! It doesn't evaporate either so you don't have to worry about the little top going dry. A 25 Watt candelabra bulb is what produces the heat. I leave mine on 24/7.
My biggest challenge this time of year (and during the summer) is I'm very much a homebody, almost reclusive. I'll be glad when the holiday season is over and I am back here in my familiar crib. LOL
I'm still plowing through the first volume of The Gulag Archipelago. It is over 600 pages long and there are two more volumes. It is unbelievable! We have always been taught about the insanity and brutality of Hitler. Compared to Stalin, Hitler was a pussycat! Stalin didn't just target certain groups of people due to their origins etc. He indiscriminately killed ANYONE.
Here is an example of his government in operation: An interrogator asked the author what he was in prison for, what had he done. Solzhenitsyn replied he was arrested for nothing. The interrogator became annoyed and shouted: "You have a 25 year sentence! A ten year sentence is reserved for those who have done nothingr!"
Solzhenitsyn was a faithful Stalinist, believing that Stalin wanted what was best for the people. He learned the horrible truth when he was arrested during WW II because he made an innocent but critical remark about the Soviet government in a letter to a friend. That is the gist of his "criminal act." Throughout the book Solzenitsyn is so very bitter and cynical - how could he be otherwise? Anyway that is my latest reading. It is a very shocking revelation. What did all that have to do with Xmas presents??????? I should have started another thread such as: What are you reading.
