A Friendly Language request from your Group Administrators

We have been noticing an upsurge of so-called "texting language" lately. Together, we wanted to respectfully request that you not post in that fashion. We love the ideas and energy our younger members bring to the group, but we'd appreciate it if you would try to write in sentences. Acronyms (LOL, ROWL)and emoticons are fine.

Wait until you're really middle-aged! I'm 56 and my son refers to me as an"old Lady". He just graduated frpm high school and started at the community college where he must write an essay a day. He sits around discussing parents and I get a good raking. He likes to tell folks that I'm 65. He considers my mother who is 80 prehistoric.

      What is middle aged?
Doesn't the definition change with the times and the average life span?
In the early pioneer days, middle aged might mean a 20 year old.

I agree. Unfortunately the younger generations are not writing complete sentences, punctuation, etc. When I get an email from my daughter, age 31, it is one long paragraph(?) with no capitalization, punctuation and so forth. I can't read most of them. I hate texting. Our family, 10 of us-extended, went to a very elegant restaurant for Thanksgiving and my son and my nephew, both age 21 and have Asperger's, spent the entire meal texting each other, friends, etc. My parents, 80 & 81, who were picking up the tab for the meal, were not amused.

IGNORE YOUR FRIENDS. If you absolutely need a cell phone for emergencies, etc. I siggest getting a Prepay such as TracFone. No monthly bills and you add minutes as you need them.

Having a limit discourages texting, and chatting on a cell phone because it is "cool". I, age 56, and my parents, 80 & 81 y/o each have one so we can be reached when we are out, but that's all.

My son, age 21 is also on the prepay plan-I give him 200 min/month and when they are gone, they are gone until the next time I fill his phone. He is very judicious about using them.
Good for you-grammar is correct spelling. Don't fret, many others get confused by that one.

Suggest you get a copy of "Bryson's Dictionary of Troublesome Words",A Writer's Guide to Getting it Right.By Bill Bryson, Broadway Books, 2002.

This book makes grammar and troublesome words fun to learn. Bill lived in England for 20 years or so, married an English woman and had three children, so he speaks from experience " from both sides of the pond."

Bill moved to England in his earlu 20's and after three children he decided they needed to experience living in the US. Bill was in culture shock when he returned, and his wife and children were fish out of water.
He has since moved back to England, the Yorkshire Dales, where he and his family are more comfortable.

He wrote a wonderful book about his experience of returning to the US. He did not recognize it. The book is "I'm a Stranger Here", notes on returning to America after 20 years away. Printed by Broadway Books, 1999. This is a little off-subject, but it's a fun book to read.

corpse's that have died a lonely death. Just a thought from one of the minions.

Can someone tell me which button to press to add more books? Also how to remove a book or an author? There is one author on my shelf that I never heard of. I am some what technically challenged.
    Thanks

Please feel free to continue to start discussions you may feel fit the theme of the group.

Elaine - I have tried to text, but it turns into a "conversation" and I go over the limit of characters!! Then I have to send another text to complete the first one I sent! So I keep texting to a minimum with my children. My hubby hates texting (he hates the small buttons), so he refuses to text. he will call back if you text him!

No, we who appreciate the English language (or are attempting to do so) also appreciate proper spelling, punctuation, etc. We do not want to scare off the younger members, or become an "elite" group. We started this group because we love words and quotes and that leads to spelling, grammar and so on...

Hello everyone, I agree... I love the energy of the youth too. Even though I'm an author and a writer (sometimes)., and I do struggle with grammer and punuaction, but I work at it everyday. I'm not a fan of texting my children and two of my grandchildren text me. It's like an other language. My worst thing is seeing the small ' i ' everywhere. You will think I'm crazy I told my 14 year old granddaughter that the small i to me seems disrespectful to ones self. I noticed her texts to me she has capitalized the I. Hurray one step for the I
