I'm currently reading, "Jane Austen and Her Times, 1775-1817" by G.E. Mitton. It's a good read if you want to know not just about Jane, but what was going in in History during her life span. It's a really old book, published in 1905. It's one of the Barnes and Noble Classics.

I have personally found two superb books for understanding and exploring Jane's life, though they are not biographies per se. The first is a tidbit or factbook called, "101 Things You Didn't Know about Jane Austen-The Truth about the World's Most Intriguing Romantic Literary Herione", by Patrice Hannon, Ph.D. This book puts in a short compiled format all the best information you would find in a biography about her.

The second book is a study not only of her books, but also how the influencing factors in her life shaped her books: "Miniatures and Morals, the Christian Novels of Jane Austen", written by Peter J. Leithart, (Ph.D. Cambridge.) This book is masterfully written and jsut a great, informative read. Hope you enjoy those books.

Agnes, I have that "101 Things..." too.

My favorite is the Carol Shields bio of her. It is short and sweet, and beautifully written, something that seems to suffer with this sort of biography, I've found. The last one I checked out of the library ( have no idea who the author was) was way to detailed concerning her family history. Too boring.
