5 Pointers

Here is a place for informal chats about the five points of the doctrine of grace. Just relax and enjoy the sovereignty of God. Share blessings and testimonies; announcements and prayer requests etc. Naturally a review of a good book would be nice too. If you are not that familiar with TULIP that is OK. You are welcome to stay. If you are...more »

    Timoth George's ROSES

Interested in what you guys might think of Dr. Timothy George's revision of TULIP. If you are not familiar with Dr. George, he is well respected reformed theologian who is the founding Dean of Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, AL. You will not have any trouble finding information about him.

He has "modified" the 5 points to these.

    R - Radical Depravity
    O - Overcoming Grace
    S - Sovereign Election
    E - Eternal Life
    S - Singular(particular) Redemption.

    What say you?

(You can find his explanation of these terms in the book Amazing Grace: God's Initiative - Our Response.)

    Hi John,

I don't have Dr. George's book. Maybe I can borrow it from the Public Library. Here are some thoughts off the cuff.

Radical Depravity - Doesn't sound DEAD enuff fer me.
Overcoming Grace - Perhaps this is an attempt to explain the irresistible Grace of God? Hope so.
Sovereign Election - True but unconditional election has Him set His love upon us without foreseen faith...
Eternal Life - True again but weak. We persevere because HE preserves us.
Singular Redemption - YES. Christ bought individuals that the Father gave to him and He calls them by name.

I would be surprised if you found it at a public library. Small circulation study book - perhaps I can send one your way.

R - How dead must one be to be dead?
    O - I think you've got his drift here.
    S - Hmmm.
    E - No argument here.
S - Not exactly what Dr. George was driving at, I don't think. I'll get back to you on this one.

Thanks for the kind offer John. I'd be happy to receive it if the Lord works it out that way.

How dead must one be, to be dead? Good question. Ever watch the "Princess Bride"? :) One of the members of our local church was stung by a bee and had an allergic reaction and was without a heart beat for more than 20 minutes but somehow the medical people were able to resuscitate him and he is still with us today.

Spiritually speaking we are TOTALLY dead in trespasses and sin. That is called Total Depravity not Radical depravity. It seems to me that the term radical depravity leaves the door open for one to say that there is still something we can do "in and of ourselves" to change our spiritual relationship with God (alienated) but the term total depravity makes us utterly dependent on God's divine intervention for us to have a change take place.
