5 Pointers

Here is a place for informal chats about the five points of the doctrine of grace. Just relax and enjoy the sovereignty of God. Share blessings and testimonies; announcements and prayer requests etc. Naturally a review of a good book would be nice too. If you are not that familiar with TULIP that is OK. You are welcome to stay. If you are...more »

    Book shelf organization

    In your library, how do you organize your books? Do you separate them by author, by subject, by books of the bible or is there a better way?

    Good question brother Doug.

    As for me, I think generally speaking my books are organized (somewhat) by subject. IE: References, Commentaries, Church History, Theology, False Religion, Languages, Counseling, End Times, Devotional, Trades, Bibliology, Evangelism and spiritual growth, etc.

    My study is small and I've out grown it I think and I'm never satisfied with the organization of my books. That is one of the main reasons that I wound up joining Shelfari. It has helped to give me an electronic list of most of my books with tags for them.

    Brother Larry,

    You have described my situation. I either have too much shelf for one topic, or not enough space for another subject. I am trying to get a little more organized. It is a terrible feeling to need a book, and not being able to find it!

    Dear Brethren;
    In my study I keep all my Baptist books together. Then I have a section of commentary sets (John Gill, Matthew
    Poole, Biblical Illustrator, J. F. & B., Pulpit Commentary, etc. etc.) Then I have a section of single volumes on the different BIble books.(On Genesis for instance I have Morris, Candlish, Leupold etc.) Also I have a separate section for Spurgeon, bound volumes(Baptiist Examiner, BBB etc.) with several other "sections", (Prophecy, Languages, modern writers, apostolic "fathers", debates, A.W. Pink etc. ) A place for everything and everything in its place.

    By Grace Only;

    Bro Medford,

    What are the dimensions of your Study and how many shelves do you have? My books are pretty much in order like you stated but I've run out of room and only have about 28 shelves. At one point I even had them numbered but moving and other things messed that up. Most books are propped up there in their place vertically but then I also have some stacks of books laying on top of them horizontally and some are setting on the floor and in boxes and a few here and there on about three desk tops and small tables that have been recently referrenced or purchased and are on my "Plan to Read" list.... I need a bigger Study with more shelves and work space (my computer, printer, router and hot plate for my coffee cup all need their place too ya know). It's a mess in here. Also, I have a lot of three ring binders with old back issues of our church paper "Baptist Beacon" in them and a cassette tape duplicating machine, old replaced computer parts and software boxes for things like Dragon Speak and Nero5 etc. Tablets and old mail that I guess I could throw away from people with "issues" stacked up too. No room for a file cabinet. Have stuff like that filed under miscellanious I guess in about 3 or 4 desk drawers. Doug, are you SURE I'm describing YOUR study NOW? :)

    Larry, when my three ring notebooks numbered 60 I threw most of them away and started putting my studies online in the form of a blog. I was greatly surprised that a large number of people read them. It saves me a lot of ink. Most of my books are very large and are getting shabby from use. I love commentaries but I'm very careful to buy the ones written by people I agree with. I really don't buy Christian books other than Bible study. Mine are ordered by type of study. I have worn out the Believer's Bible Commentary so I had to buy a new one. It had gone up $10. It's my favorite book other than the Bible. I have a lot of Bibles.

    I arrange my books according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System. At one time I had a library of over 10,000 books and a very large basement arranged like a public library. Now almost all of my books are in storage. :-( The advantage to the Dewey systems is having books arranged by subject.

      Did you have a card index file too?

      Yes, I did. I also had pockets in the back with cards for people to sign when borrowing them. I now am in the process of putting all my books in a spreadsheet. Lots of work.

      the card pocket for "friends" to sign for borrowed books is a GREAT idea.
