What Do You Look For In A Book?

I've been a reader ever since I was a kid, so I'm always curious about what other people look for in books.

For me, I usually want a book which will educate, entertain, or provide an escape. Any of the three 'E's is good for me...a book which combines all three is a rare treasure.

How about you? What do you look for in a book?

I never really consciously thought about it before, but I'd have to say the three 'E's sum up pretty well what I look for in a book. Although I'll admit that unfortunately I usually look for entertainment and/or escape more often than education.

When I am "looking" for a book I almost always look for education on a particular subject that interests me. I have always felt that I am a boring reader. My interest in books tends to be very dry and I rarely ever talk with anyone who has read the same books.

However, when a book is highly recommended to me, even if it is outside my interests, it is usually because it is well written and very entertaining (not necessarily funny, but captures the interest). I almost always enjoy those books more than the books I pick on my own. It makes me wonder why I read the books I do because they typically are not that entertaining, but are good educators.
