    doggie problems...

i have a Mini poodle called Sam. that's a picture of when he was little on the left...
we have to tie him up on a leash all day in the apartment because he jumps on the table and eats our food because he loves food to much. once when he was four months old, he ate 2 whole pears and then had diarrhea when we weren't home...
he just loves food too much and we have to be watchin him 24/7 if we don't want him to eat the stuff in the trash can. my mom won't let him off the leash and i feel bad for him cus he's crabby these days so any ideas what we could do? i don't want to have him on a leash all day.

We've never really had trouble like that from our dog so I couldn't give any advice from personal experience... but I saw on that show "It's Me or the Dog" from animal planet that you can use noise treatment to break dogs from stealing food... leave some food on the table and hide in a place where you can watch the dog but the dog doesn't suspect you're watching, and then when it tries to steal the food, blow a foghorn or whistle or something. maybe you could sprinkle cayenne pepper on some food and leave it there and let the dog learn a lesson... That's all I can think of... It's probably worth a try... I tried the noise treatment with my rabbits when they chewed stuff they weren't supposed to and it worked for them.

they sell special trash cans to keep animals out, they're meant to keep out raccoons, but you could use one until he realizes that he can't get into it and stops trying. Also you could try leaving food out that tastes bad to him but won't hurt him, and then if he realizes that the food that's left out is gross, he'll stop trying.
