What do you think of African American sections in bookstores?

Are African-American interest sections in bookstores necessary? A detriment or useful?

Absolutely useful! it makes it easier for me to find what I need. Need because there are times I simply go to a bookstore to "look" for something to read and when I see the African-American section, I head straight for it. Usually in "February" the books are lined out, however, recently I noticed that Borders has a tiny section of African-American fiction.

I'm not a member of this group but I saw this question on your website and want to comment. I do not like the idea of having an African American section in bookstores. It's almost like having a sign that says, "keep out if not African American." In fact I asked a manager at Borders in Chicago if they shelved books by AAs in a special section and was told no. But there was such a section and they were also interspersed in other sections according to genre and alphabetically. I asked him to take me there. Take me to where I can find Tananarive Due's books, her genre being paranormal and he took me to that section--I think it was called science fiction. Then I went back to the AA section and found the book there as well. I think it all depends on the store location and manager. This particular Borders is in a mixed neighborhood and near the U of C.
