BookMooching Bee – Contest of Rise

Oct. 19, I’m celebrating one year anniversary in BM.
I have my 100th book to send.
My birthday is on Oct. 30 – Halloween’s eve and the date of the 1st BookMoochers group meeting? Once again I will attend, in spirit. :)

This contest of mine celebrates these ‘bookmarks’ and more. Just my hundredfold appreciation of the book sharing experienced through BM. Think of great deals, freebies, great books, kind Angels, and priceless interactions.

Hope everyone will join and enjoy this contest.

    MECHANICS:

A weekly question (BookMooch trivia) will be asked for 3 weeks. The member who got the correct or best answer wins. The weekly period may be extended if no one has given a satisfactory answer. A week’s winner can still join for another week, but can win only two times. Contestants are not allowed to relay the question, directly or indirectly, in any forum (including the BM Foum, BookMoochers group in Ning, and BookMooching group in LT).

    QUALIFICATIONS:

The contest is open to all Filipino members of BookMooch who are also members of BookMoochers Pilipinas group in Shelfari (Vee, you are qualified, too). In BookMooch, they should have garnered a feedback of at least +2, and they should have a mooch ratio of at least 2.0. Plus, they should have introduced themselves in the Members’ Intro discussion thread here:
    http://www.shelfari.com/groups/23735/discussions/38303/Members-Intro#611974

    PRIZE:

Each of the 3 weekly winners of the 1st Mooching Bee will win 2 books and a point. The books will be chosen by the winner from the stock of ‘Beans and Pages”, a local bookstore/coffeeshop here in Palawan. I will publish the book selection this weekend. The books are from different genre, and (I think) it would not be hard for the winners to choose books they will like. The condition of books varies from slightly used to very good to new. The chosen books will be added to my inventory for mooching and the points will be refunded once mooched.

The first question will be announced later today.

    Thank you, all! Here goes.

WEEK 1 Question: What is the longest book that has ever been requested in BookMooch?

Week 1 Contest ends on: Monday, Oct. 20, 12nn.

Please post your answers by replying to this thread. Do not post here the title of the book or the actual web link of book details, just the page range. Answers should be given in the following format:

    1. Your name & BM ID
    2. 1,000-1,100 pages [Your answer. Do not give the exact number of pages, just the range, e.g., 800-900, 1,400-1,500, etc.]

Answers can be edited right up to the deadline. The best answer is the book with the most number of pages in the Detail Page in BookMooch. Your answer will be verified from the actual web link (BM Details page) and title of the book that you have to send by email (Subject: Week 1) at empirialist@yahoo.com or by Shelfari Personal Message. The link should contain the number of pages and should have at least one Previous Giver and Previous Moocher. It will not matter if the request for this book was rejected or cancelled.

    Prizes:
1 Winner will get 2 books and 1 BM point.
2 Runners-up will receive 2 BM points each.

In case the best answer is given by several contestants, the winner will be chosen through a random number generator.

Questions and clarifications, please post here also.

    Best of luck! :)

      Week 1 RECAP:

The contest heated up early on when Czar and Blooey started strong. Everytime they changed their answers, the page range of their entries looks more and more formidable. After revising their answers 4 or 5 times, they eventually settled for possibly the longest anthology ever mooched, the one by prolific editor Nina Baym, who had several long books in her name:
      http://www.bookmooch.com/se/nina+baym/-/0/10/1/-/-/-/-/-/n/-/-/-/-/

Here’s one other trivia: Of all Phil. members, czar may be the one who have mooched the longest book so far (2,400+ pages), his early entry “The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women: The Traditions in English” by Susan Gubar.

When Lenie published her intimidating reply, it dashed the hopes of the contenders. It turned out it was just a “bluff”. The bluff worked! The competition was obviously rattled and psyched up. False alarm, guys. :D

Joey came up with another longer page range, and there was uproar! (Joey, you failed to email me your book listing before the deadline. You can still send it in for a special runner up place though.) We will have to wait and see if Joey is bluffing, too. Hehe.

Patti was unsure of her entry. She was assured of at least a runner up place but, at 4,000 pages, it was a winner, Patti!

    Second week na.

Week 2 Question: Which 5 BookMooch members have the highest feedback scores?

Deadline: Oct. 24, Friday, 12 noon

Post your reply here before the deadline. The accompanying email to <empirialist@yahoo.com> (Subject: Week 2) should also be sent before the deadline. Email should contain the links to the 5 member’s bio pages, the feedback score in each, and the TOTAL score of the 5 members. In case of tie, the first one to post their reply here will be the winner. So paunahan na.

    Prizes:

-Winner gets 2 BOOKS (to be mooched for free).
(Partial list of prize book selection here: http://bookmoochers.ning.com/profile/Rise)

Plus, a bonus prize of 2 BM POINTS will be given to the winner if he/she is a member of BookMoochers Pilipinas in Ning, before the deadline of Week 2 of the contest. You may request your invitation here: http://bookmoochers.ning.com/group/bookmoocherspilipinas.

    -2 Runners-up will get 1 POINT each.

Post your reply in the following format:

    1. your name / your BookMooch ID / your Ning ID (if applicable)
    2. +1,252 (the LOWEST feedback score out of the 5 bios you have identified)

    Go!

    ADDITIONAL:
    1. Like in Week 1, answers can be revised from time to time (if you find a member with a higher score), and replies here can be edited so long as you send a new email showing your revised answers.
    2. Since feedback score is bound to change over the week, the final scores will be based on the feedback score "right after the deadline -- at the time when entries are being compared."

      Week 2 RECAP

Patti submitted her entry Tuesday, ahead of others who expressed interest in joining. She had the same answer as Joel G's except for not including the 2nd account of Mark. Jem’s entry, sent yesterday, was the same as Patti's but differed in the 5th member identified (tknoren: +1212, http://bookmooch.com/bio/toddnorenhentz , instead of Mary Spurgeon).

Joel G’s answer, posted a half hour before the deadline, is the highest! Since a “BookMooch member” is not restricted to a single account, it was still a valid answer to include the two accounts of one member.

The 5 top scorers of BM (to date) all came from US. It was led by BM Admin Mark who accumulated a total +5354 feedbacks (and still counting) under two accounts. (At my current rate of a hundred a year, I should reach the same score in 53 years. :)

Thanks for participating in Week 2. See below for the final challenge of BookMooching Bee.

WEEK 3 Question: What is the heaviest book listed in BookMooch that is in at least 3 wishlists?

Deadline is on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 5pm.

Same rules and prizes as Week 2 apply. Any form of book (boxed-set, cased, multivolume, etc.) is okay, provided there’s one BM listing and one ISBN for it.

Pls. reply in the following format:

    1. your name / BM ID / Ning ID (if applicable)
    2. 9.x lbs. (if your book weighs “9 point something” pounds)

Don’t forget to email me (Subject: Week 3) the BM link to the book before the deadline. You can revise your answers. Just send me a new email of your revised BM link.

      WEEK 3 SUMMARY

This week is all about the ‘heaviest’ book in 3 wishlists. Czar was not bluffing after all. :)

I thought the contest ended on Day 1 when Czar submitted the winning book of Week 1 (Patti’s 4,000-page book at 14.37 lbs). Czar revised his answer several times, eventually settling for the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) which packs a heavy weight of 151 lbs. That’s around 68 kg! This 20 volume book set is under 4 wishlists, including Patti’s. If Czar didn’t report it here first, Patti may have won again this week.

Here’s how it is described in Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0198611862/ref=nosim/bookmooch-20
If a copy ever turn up in BookMooch, how much do you think one will pay for its shipping?

Jem faced up to the challenge by submitting Calvin and Hobbes, er John Calvin’s commentaries, in 22 volumes.

The second heaviest book is Blooey’s out-of-print Helmut Newton photography masterpiece. A very unique book of staggering dimensions. It is not made of gold after all, but it does include a special “stand”. :)

This is how Blooey's book looks like:

To this week’s winners, I shall transfer your points tomorrow. To all major weekly winners (Patti, JoelG, and Czar), I am listing your book prizes tomorrow at the earliest, and will be mailing them next week.

      End of Contest. Thank you!

I just had to post this here as pahabol, as I was reminded of this during the chika last night at the 1st get-together of Bookmoochers Pilipinas:

When I first read Rise's contest for Week 2, I actually thought he was just referring to Filipino/Philippine-based Bookmoochers. So that was what I first researched on. It was only when I came up with my Top 5 and went back to the discussion here that I realized Rise was asking for the Top 5 Bookmoochers everywhere!

Anyway, what I came up with as the Top 5 Pinoy Bookmoochers may still be interesting tidbit of info for everyone here.

So, without further ado, here are the Top 5 Pinoy Bookmoochers with the highest feedback scores (as of Nov 1, 2008, 12:00 noon):

    1. PATTI - http://www.bookmooch.com/m/bio/mournfields
    Feedback score: +427

    2. SUMTHINBLUE - http://www.bookmooch.com/m/bio/sumthinblue
    Feedback score: +361

    3. TRICCIE - http://www.bookmooch.com/m/bio/libreria
    Feedback score: +235

    4. CIZI - http://www.bookmooch.com/m/bio/cizi
    Feedback score: +188

    5. CZAR - http://www.bookmooch.com/m/bio/cezartigno
