No, it is and it isn't about the coffee. Iwouldnt have started this group if I hadn't recently gotten kicked out of Brilliant Babes ( and dudes) because I got cross wise with one of the admins there. She loves Starbucks. I don't I said I couldn't drink the crap, but instead of retorting that she loved it, she told me that I was hurting people by insulting their favorite coffee, subsquently I was kicked. I do not want anyone here to be afraid to say they hate a writer, a beverage, a city or anything else. They might get told what an idiot they are, but they will not get booted:) So I dont want it to be aboutt he coffee or about Brilliant Babes. Lets let it be about all the cool stuff all of you, my really cool Shelfari friends, and your really cool Shelfari friends that are not my friends yet, want it to be.
of course, great coffee, great food, great places, great writing, and the sometimes how frustrating when soemthing isnt one of those....

NO! NO! Please, I do not want to go to war with BBD, at the rate we are growing, we will twice as big as they are by morning anyway! please feel free to be in both. BBD is a cool group. Just, if I cant be in it, and maybe there are others, I thought it would be nice to have a place kinda like it, but different and nobody playing bouncer.

Upland is really passionate (and earnest) in what he says. When you agree it's inspiring to see someone bravely stand up for what they feel is right. if you don't agree and you're not used to being questioned, it might be unsettling. i think some people say things lightheartedly and get threatened by a debate. There's also a lot of devil's advocates on here who want to start some big issue just to feel the breeze and then get annoyed when someone like upland stands up and does the heavy-hitting for the community. Personally, it makes me happy when upland lays the smack on the bullies who aren't thinking or caring how what they say probably really hurts other people. I reason with them to death. Both are means to an end... I found the description for BB to be elitist and never joined. This group looked interesting, though.

I hear you Susan, I have not posted in that group in quite some time. It is a shame because I really enjoyed the group when I first joined. Now I have found that over some time the atmosphere in the group has taken on a bit of a haughty flare. Kind of similar to another group that has the same chief contributors. I enjoy this group because it is diverse with opinions, beliefs, and tastes. For me, I enjoy a good debate and like that fact that in this group you can voice how you feel without being afraid of getting stoned or bludgered to death. Hats off to uplandpoet for allowing us to share the things we love or do not love in a friendly and welcoming group.

I am in no way a coffee connoisseur; in fact, my only requirements are that it is hot, black and doesn't taste like dreck. But I draw the line at instant. As far as reading; I typically have about five books going at once.

My idea of "instant" is fine ground coffee in my French press. It brew out in about two minutes, and that's fast enough for me.

Starbucks started out as a tea shop in Pike Place Market that also sold fresh roasted coffee beans. They did not have an espresso maker in there. At some point they started brewing coffee. But there was a restaraunt that served espresso in the Market, upstairs from Starbucks and a little south, that might have given them the idea. Man that stuff was strong. I was a teen living in Seattle, must have been '73 or '4. I had never had anything approaching the potency of espresso in my natural life, other than once when I took an amphetamine pill, called a "cross top" that kept me up for about three days. This coffee was like that only it wore off after about five hours. Whoo! Never has Starbucks produced anything like that stuff though.

My first really serious girlfriend's family ate macrobiotically and the only thing in their fridge that wasn't rice or miso or something like that was the eternal pint of half-and-half for the coffee. Her parents always ground their own coffee from beans they bought at that little shop in the Pike Place Market and I remember it tasting pretty good, especially with that dollop of half-and-half, which was like the only thread attaching their kitchen to the rest of America and normalcy.

I guess I do associate Starbuck's houseblend with the thrill of young romance and it will always taste good to me. But I don't shop there much and I never got into the latte craze. I am lactose intolerant these days anyway and soy milk, well, it's soy milk.

I like black coffee. I like it freshly roasted and freshly brewed and I used to even roast my own beans. That is a smoky proposition but the coffee doesn't get any fresher than that and buying green beans saves you about 2 dollars off the pound.

What would have been cool of course would have been to buy a few shares in Starbucks back then, but I barely had enough to buy a cup of coffee from the coins people threw in my guitar case.

Ahh Michael, What a lovely story - It's almost worth being awake in the middle of the night to find a lovley invitation from Upoet and a good tale from you.

I was visiting a friend in Seattle and got the habit - only while there, 'tis like a drug...but it's the last one we have. I make myself organic, decaf, espresso with steamed organic milk - it makes me feel very high maintenance - although it's the only serene pleasure for the day that can take off like a shuttle launch . . .unpredictable.

While you were a Seattle teen in the 70's, I was a "yuppie" - in my thirties and living on Capitol Hill. The second (or maybe third) store that Starbucks opened was on Broadway next to the old QFC. My parents always drank Folgers; this was very different. I've always liked my coffee with a kick; but I realize it's not everybody's cup of tea. (Couldn't resist.)

Great story Michael! Yeah, from what I have read, the original three owners strongly resisted serving coffee by the cup, I think it was the mid 1980s when Schultz persuaded them to become the Starbucks we know today.

Confession, my parents drank maxwell house instant and my grand parents taught to love coffee with it percolated out of the big blue steel cans. Bellazeal taught me to grind beans (I thought she was silly the first time I saw her do it). Over the past decade or so, I have become to true coffee snob. I still drink any coffee (not instant) in a bind, but sure do prefer GOOD coffee!

A NOTE in defense of Folgers/Maxwell house:

As you all know by now Community Coffee's premium coffees are my favorites, but I have made the mistake of telling folks that I love Community Coffee, adn they bring me a red bag brick of Community Coffee, and while I am deeply touched by the gesture, I have found there doesn't seem to be a really good preground coffee, so if one is to forgo the morning routine of grinding a fresh beans, I doubt you will do significantly better than the massive old line brands.

Welcome Booklady (and everybody else I havent personally welcomed!) I do enjoy a cup of DD now and then, not my favorite, but very good. Love my KK donuts and can drink their coffee, too. My problem with either is the tendancy to grab a box of doughnuts while I am there:)

One more coffee note: I have found that Mexican restuarants have the consistantly best coffee of any type of restuarants. also my very limited experience with Amtrak is that they serve a delicious cup of coffee. The coffe is only 2 bucks, but of course you have to buy a train ticket:)

CCrazy, no you are really at 3 out of 3, CCs isn't really part of the equation, except as the reason I got kicked out of BBD and decided to start this group, so it is a tribute to my devotion to CCs that started the group, but coffee isn't what I had planned to be the main focus, though we could keep a thread going for coffee nuts!
Sadly, unless you are in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette or North Shore, you cannot go to CCs, Community Coffee is a local New Orleans coffee company, and in spite of my begging, they are not interested in franchising or expanding their shops beyond Louisiana....

I have another thing that I love about Starbucks or any coffee shop that finds itself plopped centrally into the biggest boostore in town. I sit in the cafe at B&N every week with an herbal tea and read their mags and visit with my friends. Funny I didn't even think of that last night. Books and Coffee...Good, I shunned the big chain when they first came, crowding out my friendly privately owned stores but relented. Now it's my persoanl Cheers, where everybody knows my name.

Well Starbucks is okay with me, I tend to get the shakes for the day after drinking it though and don't have it much. I do prefer Dunkin Donuts (must be a CT thing huh booklady?) Panera is good too. I'm home today and actually had some instant folgers....wasn't too bad, added a little hot chocolate mix to it. Can't drink my mom's coffee much....tends to be a bit too strong. I don't get the shakes, but I feel like I need to chew it. The worst coffee though? My friend invited me over last week for coffee and bagels. I love her, but she is a bit of a flake...I knew the bagels would not be there and I was half expecting her to either be in bed still or gone, having forgotten about our little get together. She was home, but no bagels :( and coffee that I needed a fork and knife to get through...

I think it is a CT thing, NETTR! When we were traveling this summer/fall, we had DD all the way to Michigan. Then--no DD. It was awful, but we survived. We got to Medford, OR and found (by calling corporate office of DD) that there was a DD in Salem, OR, 100 miles from Medford. So of course we hopped in the car and drove to Salem. Addicted?, why do you ask? Now we're in Port Charlotte, FL, and there's a DD just a few miles from here. Life is good!

I bought my husband a hot cocoa maker for Christmas a couple years ago. Now I use that to make my own coffee concoctions, usually starting with a base of General Foods International Coffee's Sugar Free Decaf Suisse Mocha.

Certainly, but can you at least be a bit of a snob about your cocoa?
I dont mean high end, just devoted to a certain type.
To give you an idea, I just started Atkins Diet a couple of days ago, (yeah i know all that meat and cheese cant be good for you, but it does take the weight off quick and i am tired of this 300 lb body), but some of my favorite treats are Little Debbie snack cakes, especially Swiss Rolls (which I cant help but call Swiss Miss rolls) and Nutty Buddies. I love the taste, AND THE PRICE) so when I was last in Chattnooga, I felt like I was only holy ground when I drove past the corporate HQ for Little Debbie. We stopped and I had my picture taken with the building and its logo behind me!

Upland, good luck with the Atkins. It works, but you have to adjust the diet slightly...add a lot of salads to the protein.

"Ghawa" is what they call coffee out here, and the Arabs started this coffee-making back in Ethiopia a long time ago. The local brew is green, untoasted unsweetened coffee, and that's an acquired taste, believe me.

The second local brew is known as "Turkish" coffee, but I first drank it in Greece. It is brewed over a flame in a small pan with lots of sugar, no milk of course, served with the grounds and all...let it settle! One particularly weird thing is they add cardomom to the grind, which is about the easiest way to totally ruin an otherwise startlingly strong cup of coffee.

Starbucks is open here, and I like the variety of blends and brews, but I can buy a kilo of Colombian beans from my ethnic coffee shop for 13$ US , and I resent paying the same for 250 gms in Starbucks.

[I also have ten different blends of TEA in my kitchen!]

Wow Mark! I didn’t see this coming :)
Its “Gahwa”.. and it usually goes with dates or some kind of sweets as its very light and unsweetened.
still can’t get used to it though!
As for Turkish, tried it once or twice.. VERY thick & strong! Can’t remember that it was sweetened, but I like the way it’s served :) I guess espresso fans might like it.

I'm probably more of a tea person, so I have no faves in regards to coffee shops, let anyone a big corporate one like Starbucks, I prefer the small business owner. Upland, sorry to hear you got kicked out of a group for, um, having an opinion! Isn't that what makes us all unique individuals? Having and voicing our opinions. That's why I'm enjoying this group. :)

This thread made me curious, so I went and checked out the BB description, and, I gotta be honest here, I was afraid to even apply given my penchant for Stephen King, even though I have a decent number of their "favorites" on my shelf.

Let me clarify, Suze, the admin that ended up kicking me, has been very nice to me in the last few weeks. I, for one, do not have a problem with BBD, I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the group and would still be there today if i hadnt been kicked. if you ask, and you are nice, they will probably invite you, in fact, on eof the problems i had was that i had also teased another admin about her love of nora roberts. i think they are great and certainly love fine literature, i am not sure how much they can handle my rough sense of humor, but please dont trash'em. join them if you like, if not, enjoy being here. in fact, feel free to be part of both. i think i do like the non private aspect here better, but to each their own....

and nutmeg, you will get grief from me over stephen king, but then i read stuff i expect to be teased about, too.

Gosh, I haven't been online in a while and so much seems to be happening. Hope everyone is having a great summer. For the record, my favorite coffee house is Java Jive in Hannibal MO. Although for chain coffee houses, Caribou Coffee is pretty darn good. Now, I had better go check out BB and see what all the fuss is about!

This topic was what originally caught my attention about this group! I'm a total coffee snob and I can't stand Starbucks anymore. They don't use fresh beans and their coffee is weak. I am currently enjoying a hot cup of Klatch Sumatra Goya Mountain -- yum. I'm in the process of trying out different places around the country to see what is really good. So far Stumptown in Portland is really good (try their Holler Mountain), Groundwork in LA (if you like dark roasts, try their Black Gold).

Oh, and I like to read, which is why I'm on Shelfari in the 1st place :)

What is CC? Is that an abbreviation?

community coffee out of new orleans, but the funny thing is, the bulk of what they do is preground stuff that tastes about like folgers, but their premium stuff is CC's, and is some of the best coffee sold in America!

    Hi,
I like coffee, tea, red wine, chocolate and reading good books or magazines. I like also Sturbukcs and for me is really doesn't matter where I bought my cup of coffee. Sometimes I bought coffee in Sturbucks in Sydney-Australia when I previously lived for couple years, when I visited Auckland-New Zealand, Paris-France or Vienna-Austria, but we don't have not yet Sturbucks in Bratislava-Slovakia. But I'm glad that I enyojed this group "Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read" on Shelfari.
