My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey by Jill Bolte Taylor

I have added this book to our to be read shelf. In this week's webcast (Chapter 8), Oprah mentioned this scientist who wrote a book about her personal experience in which lost the use of one side of her brain and how she responded to this loss. Here is what the Amazon review says:
"Jill Taylor was a 37-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist when a blood vessel exploded in her brain. Through the eyes of a curious scientist, she watched her mind deteriorate whereby she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Because of her understanding of the brain, her respect for the cells in her body, and an amazing mother, Jill completely recovered. In My Stroke of Insight, she shares her recommendations for recovery and the insight she gained into the unique functions of the two halves of her brain. When she lost the skills of her left brain, her consciousness shifted away from normal reality where she felt "at one with the universe." Taylor helps others not only rebuild their brains from trauma, but helps those of us with normal brains better understand how we can consciously influence the neural circuitry underlying what we think, how we feel and how we react to life's circumstances."

you will see an 18 min. video in which Jill Taylor speaks about her stroke and what she learned from it. It is astounding.

I watched Oprah's First Soul Series and found it interesting. It seemed to be setting up the preface to the understanding of the book and her next three studies. However I followed the link to Jill Bolte Taylor's talk for TED and found it amazingly compelling. I am happy that Oprah has chosen to feature her on the Soul Series. And, look forward to next Monday night.

Plus, on the most recent New Earth webcast, Oprah mentioned that starting May 12th she will have a new webcast called Soul Stories and Jill Bolte Taylor will be on it!

It just makes my Monday nite. I haven't had time to chat on the threads but I am listening, I was feeling sad as the ends was looming - I am looking forward to more - the lectures and conversation keep me stimulated and the path active.

I was disappointed in Oprah's first Soul Stories webcast with Jill Bolte Taylor. The 18 min video of her speech is much more informative. Her interview was more like an advertisement for the book which I plan to read someday. What was your reaction?

I was NOT disappointed in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th interviews that Oprah had with Jill Bolte Taylor! I just finished viewing them and was amazed, uplifted, and enlightened by the content. Dr. Bolte Taylor's explanation of her experience and what she learned from it as to how she is living her "second time around" or "second life" after her 7 year recovery from a stroke that took her left brain abilities awaya and made her aware of the beauty and peace we all have in the right brain made all of what Tolle was teaching (ego, pain body, controlling thoughts, being in the now) fit together so much more clearly for me. These interviews are not to be missed. Here is the site address for them: http://www.oprah.com/spiritself/oss/ss_oss_archive.jhtml

Jill Bolte Taylor's message resonated with me so deeply because it was told from the point of a patient. She put into words what I have attempted to explain to others about myself. But, I feel I sometimes fail miserable. I am not recovering from a stroke, but, other debilitating illnesses. Now I know how to explain it. "I may not be the person you knew me to be or want me to be, but I am still here."
