hm, just started to post something & then i lost it so here i go again. Reading "Annabel" right now & truly loving it (sorry Judy, it wasn't your cup of tea right?). from its dramatic, harsh beginning, the novel reveals a world different to many of us, one of living in Labrador in less than easy conditions. does this setting make it harder or easier for the main character, born a hermaphrodite, something which each of his parents view differently? the characters are all richly drawn, both the boy (what he raised as) & his parents, a friend of the family who is a special person in the boy's life, & even the peripheral characters are gems. the boy has a gradual awakening to his true self & eventually leaves Labrador for St. Johns (i think!) to make a new life for himself & come to terms with who he really is. i haven't quite finished it yet so i can't ruin the ending (not that i would!
i must say that i think this is the best year ever for the nominees & it is going to be a hard decision. last year i struggled between 2 choices - this year i have more than 2 favourites already i think!

also read "Room" & was disappointed in this one, long sitting on my to-read list. it reminded me of the Jaycee Dugard (sp?) ordeal & i wondered when it was written in terms of when JD was discovered & rescued. i would give it bonus points for creativity but somehow it just felt flat & anti-climactic.

trying to remember what else i have read - Dahanu Road another one that was a bit of a disappointment in that i normally love reading stories about India. this one jumped back & forth in time, telling the two stories of a grandson & his grandfather. both have been landowners. the conflict in the story comes from the tribes & how the landowners have often abused them, the grandfather has a terrible secret & the grandson has pangs of conscience which culminates in his falling in love with one of the tribal women.

also read Death Spiral - murder mysteries not my cup of tea but really enjoyed this tale of a World War II hero, a Spitfire pilot,Wilf McLaughlin, who comes home injured, both seen & unseen. the plan is to return to school eventually but for now he tinkers in his father's legal office, &, as a fringe benefit, develops a relationship with his father's secretary, Carol, an interesting character in her own right, beautiful in an an conventional way, smart & independent. shortly after his arrival home horrible murders begin happening in the small, sleepy community & somehow Wilf always finds himself entangled in them in some way. he starts to believe that he has brought some evilness back with him from the war, from the horrors of the war, & that he is causing the evil that is occurring in his town. suspenseful, good to the end, Wilf is such a sweet but damaged person & i so badly wanted things to turn out alright for him.

finished another - Night Shift - tales of an ER doctor, well-written & very interesting (tho a tad scary at times: the mistakes, the lack of sleep factor) but hard for me to set this up as competitor with some of the fiction nominees.

"A Man in Uniform" by Kate Taylor was one of my favourite titles from this list. A snappy dectective story set in 1890s Paris - great setting and great characters with the Dreyfuss Affair as a backdrop.
