    hi ma-ri-a :)

yes this was first a "musical" (on stage)... unfortunately, i didn't get to go see this one (i usually make an effort to go see them, i love stage plays and musicals!)... however, a friend of mine went and said she really enjoyed it... and it was a smash hit, so i am also looking forward to the movie. it gets released at our cinema tomorrow... however, i might have to wait for the dvd... depending on how much time i have!

Am I the only one that wants to puke when I see the previews for this? Ugghh, I feel like Meryl Streep just needs to get over herself already! The only person I would go see in this movie is Colin Firth (and maybe Pierce Brosnan). I know Streep can act her pants off, but honestly, after awhile it's like okay already, we get it. Does she need to be in everything? It's kinda how I feel about Julia Roberts. Who knows, maybe it's just me! :)

HAHA!! OMG! I laughed SOOO hard when I read your comments, because I feel EXACTLY the same way you do! I've been SOOO over Meryl Streep for a long time...Anyway, sorry to anyone who is a fan, but we are all free to express our opinions. :)

hmmm... could it be that you not liking Meryl Streep affects your opinion on the movie??

I'm not a fan either but I just like and looking forward to see this movie! :)

haha... i was the total opposite to you Annie... when i first saw the previews i thought... hmmm, i haven't seen Meryl Streep for a long time... LoL !!!!!!!!!!

of course she's been in movies lately... but i don't think i have seen any of them?
i am trying to remember the last time i saw her in something.

i don't dislike her, but i'm not her biggest fan either... i think she is a talented actress, but not one of my favorites.

      oh and Charlie... you're fine!
we all have respect here for other member's taste and opinions... we are all different... and i have not yet had to send anybody to separate corners, Lol :)

That's so funny Annie, my cousin said the exact same thing. She is excited to see Colin Firth (he's not very attractive in my opinion, but oh well, pierce brosnan is) but she thinks that Meryl Streep couldn't sing in this special she saw on the movie. I have to agree with you on Julia Roberts though.

Yes, this was a stage play first as Joanne said. I love plays, musicals, the arts in general - I actually buy season tickets each year to our musical theatres. I had the opportunity to watch the play twice. It's fun and very entertaining! I don't care who is in the movie, the STORY and MUSIC is worth watching the movie alone. The actors are bonuses.

I usually don't like musicals on cinema too much, but i really like Meryl Streep and ABBA made some great songs. On the other hand there is Pierce Brosnan polluting the screen, and I am sure they only included those songs I am already fed up with. I guess I will only see this one if someone pulls me along...

Yes, it was first a musical. I saw it and it was really good. Me and my whole family (like my parents, sister, aunts, cousins ect...) are going to see the movie. I'm so excited! I just hope that the movie will be as good as the musical.

I, too, saw the stage play several years ago, and loved it. I saw the movie two weeks ago, and I loved it even more. It was filmed in Greece, and the scenery was beautiful. I am not crazy about Meryl Streep, but I do like Abba, and there was lots of music. I know it probably doesn't appeal to the more serious minded, but I loved it, and I want to see it again. It's just a fun show.

    Finally, I’ve seen this movie:

    1. Like the storyline! Simple and yet made an impact on me…
    2. Like the scenery! (Where is this? Greece?)
    3. Like the songs! Though I felt weird seeing Pierce Brosnan sings esp that I think I last saw him in 007! :) From action movie to musical…
    4. Like all the dads! So far, I like all the films I’ve seen with Colin Firth! I like the way he acts and speaks when he’s stressed, panicking, tensed, etc… (shift + F7) :)
    5. Like Meryl Streeps’ friends! They’re funny!
    6. Like Dominic Cooper! Lol! first saw him in History Boys! MA-MMA MI-A!!! I like the way he smiles. He smiles with his eyes… looks genuine! Ok ok.. This is girl talking here… :)
    7. In some scenes, I think I find Meryl over-act --- during her singing acts. Maybe it’s just me. Is this her first musical movie?
    8. Choreography is ok. Flippers…

    5 out of 5!!!

I read that the daughter is one of the plastics in Mean Girls… She’s the ‘weather’ girl, right? I remember her differently in that movie…

Hi Maria. Will be watching Mama Mia next week. The reason I'm writing...is Colin Firth. I just loooove him. Have you seen his latest film? It's called "When Did You Last See Your Father?" If you haven't, I'd recommend you did.

I thought the movie was good in spots in others it just got to be too much. I agree with you both with Colin Firth, but was a bit disappointed about his role in the film. Would have appreciated a little less song and a little more backstory about Donna and the 3 men.

Yes, she is one of the Plastics. She's like the dumbest or the weather girl as you put it. I haven't seen the movie yet but I want to soooo bad! I bought the album and know the songs forwards and backwards. I go back to school on wednesday so probably I won't be able to see it until it comes out on DVD. *sad face*

I've seen 'Mamma Mia!' twice on the London stage. Though the film is super, it is nothing like the brilliance of seeing the musical live. I recommend the stage version to all!

graham, i haven't seen either the movie or the stage-show yet...

but i agree entirely with how a movie can not compare to the live stage version.
i believe this has more to do with "atmosphere" and the feeling of being involved (actually physically being there)... rather than the acting/singing/story itself.
unfortunately, you can never fully describe how wonderful a stage show is to someone who hasn't been, either!
i find this is much the same as travelling somewhere... sure you can return home and share your experiences with your friends... but you can never describe the "feeling" of being there!

I was VERY impressed with Meryl Streep's Voicals. She sang "Winner Takes It All" which was also sang at one time by Barbra Streisand. Once Barbra Streisand does a song...I think anyone who trys after sucks...but Meryl Streep feld her own. Impressive!!! :)

I was really suprised too that she did a good job singing in this musical. Especially "The Winner Takes it All." I don't care what anyone says, this was a very good movie.

I loved it! I actually cried when Meryl Streep sang "The winner takes it all" This isn't actually new for her. This is her first full on musical movie, but her roots are in Musical theater on broadway.

Really? I didn't know that... anyways, I just thought that she overacted in her solo-act (scene with Mr. Pierce) -- maybe her actions or -- i dunno... but I like her when she sang the mamma mia and the one during her daughter's party! :)

      still love the movie! :)

I saw it on stage a few years ago, so I was thrilled to see it was coming to the big screen. Although, I don't think anything can compare to seeing it live, I did enjoy the movie and all it's corniness!! The music was great and it was just what it intended to be...entertaining!

Finally watched the movie yesterday for my friends birthday (one of the gals who came on my birthday to watch the play with me) and we wanted to compare. We enjoyed the stage show more. I liked the movie (didn't love it). I agree with you Maria with Meryl Streep's over acting. While watching her, she looked so uncomfortable and awkward - meaning, her arm and hand placements/movements (to me this was more apparent when she was singing "Winner takes it all") and even when she was standing still or moving from one direction to another (especially when she was singing a song!). I know, I know, I'm being very nit-picky. My favorite part of hers (that she looked totally in her element) was when she went to Sophie's room to help her get ready for the wedding. I can't remember the title of the song (like I remember when) but that whole scene with her and Sophie made me cry. AND when Pierce B. was singing, I had bouts of giggling and I coundn't stop (I was actually crying)! I couldn't get over the fact that Remington Steele/007 was singing! I thought of all the actors HE was miscast; in my opinion, he shouldn't have been in the movie. I would totally recommend it!

i finally got around to seeing this movie today... although i haven't seen the stage show, i can imagine how much better it would have been live... i love my stage musicals (just saw 'Beauty and the Beast' yesterday on stage, it was fantastic).... anyhow, although i enjoyed the movie... i don't think anything can compare to watching a live show, where you feel really involved and the actors can actually catch your eye as they are performing, and they encourage your participation and enjoyment... there's nothing like being able to yahoo and burst into applause at the end of each song during a musical... especially at the end when the whole cast come out on stage (i always feel like crying at that point ~ LoL!!) ... so watching the movie version (although i thought it was great) just wouldn't compare to the live stage show ~ there is no atmosphere.
