    Movie

    Save Changes Cancel

So for everyone who has seen the movie, I was wondering what you thought of it. Of course no movie can ever stand up to the book, but all in all I thought it was pretty good. Just wanted to hear some other opinions. This does not seem to be an active group from what I have seen so I thought I would try to spark a conversation.

You don't have to limit it to Twilight! If you want to discuss another movie which was made based on a book, or anything else - I'm game.

I wasn't expecting the movie to compare to the book. I really thought the movie, itself, had some bad acting and bad editing. There really wasn't any character development, either. I did like the movie, though, but I am not sure I would have lilked it if I didn't read the book. Can't wait for the next movie. Just another way to experience the majic of Twilight.

Exactly what I thought. Overall the movie was okay, but some of it was... ya... I don't know if I can sit through the next movie. Whenever I read New Moon I have to skip over the non-Edward parts... I'm awful I know, but what can you do? ;)

I agree I enjoyed the movie, but I think the only reason is because I loved the books. I also stress enjoy because I knew better than to compare it to the book. I tried to tell my sister this, but she still went to the movie with the expectation of it being like the book.

I liked the movie but did not love it. Usually movies can't compare with the book. However, some of the casting was great (loved Alice, for example) and some of the scenes were fantastic (i.e., baseball game) but they added in a subplot that was unecessary (dead guy at the mill). I liked Edward, Bella, Jacob, Esme, and Emmit as welll. Charlie was good but Carlyle... the acting was good but the hair!!! Why'd Carlyle's have to be so obviously dyed?

I hope with a bigger budget they can do more justice in the sequels. One thing that bothered me was that they seemed to want to be picturesque and show lots of beautiful people and/or scenery. But there was a lot of dialogue or voiceovers in Bella's "voice" that should have been used directly out of the book. New MOON is going to be a difficult book to convey visually. I think.

Yes to Alice! I wish she was in it a bit more. And what was with Carlisle's hair?! It looked awful! But he and Esme were very cute together. All the Cullens were great. I like the scene they added of all of them in the kitchen cooking for Bella. That was sweet, and it gave the audience a sense of everyone's character without spending too much time with dialogue.

yeah I agree with you. I also wonder how far they can take the sequels and keep them pg. I just can't see how Breaking Dawn can be made into a pg movie without some major cutting and editing. The whole birthing scene, and not to mention getting a baby/actor who can pull off similar actions as Nessie. Maybe they could use CGI but I would think that would be hard.

I didn't like the cinematography of this movie and with a new director for New Moon, maybe the look of it will be different. I enjoyed the movie, although the first time, I nearly hated it. It was because I compared it to the book and I had a movie already playing in my mind and the two did not mesh well. I also found the dialogue lacking in any depth and very... fractured. Seemed Bella couldn't finish a sentence without stuttering and Edward was constantly sucking venom from his teeth! LOL! Well, the second time, i went in just to watch it and have fun, and it was better the second time around. Then I had to watch it one last time just to make sure I liked it! LOL! So, I ended up enjoying the movie while reminding myself it is not like the book and I pushed all that negativity out of the way and just enjoyed the characters and how pretty (albeit bleached) everyone was. Funny how they couldn't find BLONDE actors?? Anyway, I have high hopes for the next movie. I hear rumors that Jacob will be recast. Not sure why... i thought Taylor did a great job!

Yes, Mimsey - I thought the "Jacob" actor was great as well. But maybe they need a new look as he changes and Taylor is too young?

He's only 16 in the book and Taylor is 16 now. I guess they need someone who would look a little more threatening than bubble-gum, but his smile is what always melted Bella's heart and Taylor's got that smile! I actually got to "meet" Taylor for a quick 30 seconds while he was on the Hot-Topic tour, and he's such a nice guy!! He was so excited about being Jacob. I'd hate for it to end for him!

Yeah, he is not very threatening. :) Also, Jacob hits that growth spurt so that may have something to do with it...if I remember, Bella says that he looks more like 25. That could be one reason.

the movie was great! I really enjoyed it and have ended up seeing it 6 times...I was kinda annoyed by the pg13 rating...I hope they up it for the next one...
The books are way better but that wasn't a surprise...

I liked the casting and I hope they stick with taylor...changing cast members for sequels is always a stupid idea...once your audience connects to the characters/actors...that's an important aspect to stick with...

I loved the movie, but it wouldn't be the same without reading the book first. As you're watching the movie, you can see the parts the altered, added, or left out completely. Such as when Bella first has the conversation about him being a vampire, it is not out in the woods, and he does not make her say "vampire", it is in her car on the way back from Port Angeles.

I enjoyed the movie a great deal, but only because I loved the book. I thought Edward was good, Alice was adorable, Bella has totally grown on me, Jessica was perfect, etc. But one of the things that frustrated me was that they chose actors who didn't fit the physical description of the characters (in a book where physical descriptions are important). I loved Carlisle and thought he actually looked good in the baseball scene, but that first hosptial scene - OMG, he could have been molded out of plastic! It sort of reminds me of the 2nd Fantastic Four movie. I think Jessica Alba is adorable, but to turn her blond hair and blue eyed just looks wrong. Nikki Reed just looked wrong with that blond hair.

And my favorite part of the book were the snappy exchanges between Bella and Edward and I missed that in the movie.

I agree with you that some of the characters did not look the way they were described, but Stephenie was there when they were choosing the actors and if I remember correctly she said that she thought they were perfect. Just goes to show you the way a description can be different for each person. At first, I didn't like any of them playing the parts, but I watched the trailer so many times that they started to grow on me. oh well...

the first time i watched the movie i found myself analyzing it, picking out all the differances. i wondered why they made edward sound like he had a speech problem in the lab. the time when they were laying in that open area looking at one another, i thought they spent too much time of the movie focusing on that....ya, adding the "extra drama" like the mill and stuff...it was unnecessary as they could of used that time to concentrate more on the actual sequence of the book. the list goes on if you want an actual side by side comparison. but i saw it 6 or 7 times in the theatre, and after i completely disected the movie the first time, i come to the realization that movies are BASED on books, that's it. the books gave them a FOUNDATION to make a movie....so they are going to keep some of the MAJOR scenes the same or close to, but they are going to add in some extra drama, take out some things and just shift it around a bit. they kept the baseball scene which i LOVED, the scene when she walked into the lab, and prom. eventhough i have read the first book twice, i don't remember enough details about it to really compare it side by side. i will say some of the "acting" come off as more staged than real. in some movies (like mama mia which i love), you can tell the actors really fall in the form of the character like meryl streep does in mama mia. i think that would of made twilight better. they couldn't of picked a more perfect Alice, she was exactly what i pictured...i think as far as characters, she was the best pick for the part they chose.
overall, i've seen the movie a good 23 times now, i absolutely love it, and i am anxiously waiting for it to come out on dvd so i can watch it in better quality!! :)

I read the book first and then watched the movie - actually, I've watched it 4 or 5 times now.
I really thought that Kristen Stewart was not that good of an actress at first - there was a lot of eye-rolling and twitching that I suppose could be considered a "teenage" thing. After additional viewings, it didn't bother me as much. I hope that improves in New Moon. I agree with some of the comments about the hair. The color was bad for the blondes and some were oviously wigs. I pretty much chalk that up to the fact that the 1st one had a pretty low budget. I'm expecting, since #1 was a success, that New Moon has a higher budget and some of those things will be better. I was really worried about how cheesy Jacob's werewolf transformation could look - but what I've seen in the trailer looks good.

The movie was alright as far as movies go, but I can't say I liked it very much. They changed and disected the movie too far from the original book. To me, there is no excuse for that. Look at Lord Of The Rings! A few unnecessary scenes were cut out of the movie for the sake of time and budget, but Peter Jackson did not change the story or sequences in any way. He stayed true to the books which is not easy when you are dealing with something as complicated as Tolkein's universe. Though the Twilight series is outstanding, it certainly cannot hold a candle to Lord Of The Rings in terms of complexity. If Jackson could do it with Tolkein's masterpiece, then why couldn't that be done with Twilight? Hopefully, the change in director will make the difference in New Moon.

Actually in the book the elves did not show up at Helm's Deep, but in the movie they did. I think that is a pretty significant change in the story.

I think the movie was perfect for it's intended audience..I went to the midnight showing with a student who was 14 and she LOVED it. I thought it was okay, I didn't like some of the things that were left out, but as with any book-to-movie, I don't think you can do the book justice without it becoming a 3 hour movie. I like the actress they have playing Bella, but it seemed to me that Edward's personality was off...I never saw that "burning-desire-my-world-is-nothing-without-you" kind of emotion between them, he seemed more like he was angry at her all the time. That said, I will of course be buying it and watching it endlessly when it comes out on DVD ;)
