THE PROPHET MUHAMMED , salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, STATUS IN THE LIGHT OF THE QURÁN AND SUNNAH

The example of the life and striving of the beloved messenger ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, has always been a driving power that stirs in the hearts of the believers the ability to set examples of righteousness ,benevolence ,generosity ,sacrifice ,and other forms of goodness that will constitute the believers to better themselves in their lives. But what do we as the followers of the best of creation Sayyidina Muhammed, salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, know about his status. We have limited our knowledge of the Prophet ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, to what we have heard from the scholars ,or to the limited writings of certain aspects of his life that constitute only a few pages. By doing this we have limited our understanding of the greatness given to him by our Lord  the most high. To speak about the status of the Prophet ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, is a topic that is to spacious to be comprehended by words ,however of what we do happen to write ,it will be best to refer to what is mentioned in the book of Allah  and the sayings of the messenger ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, himself to try and catch a glimpse of the beloveds greatness.

THE PROPHETS ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, SUPERIORITY IN THE HOLY QURÁN

Allah subhanah wa taala in surah al maídah verse 15 states : verily there has come unto you a light (muhammed) and a clear book(al-qurán). In the interpretation of this verse the true scholars have deduced that the light refers to the Prophet ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, because he is the most perfect of all creation. He is a light created from the divine light of Allah  and he illuminates everything he comes into contact with. With him has come guidance , salvation and the qurán.

Allah subhanah wa taala has decreed that obedience to his beloved is actually obedience to him as stated by the verse in surah an nisa verse 80 : He who obeys the messenger, obeys Allah, and has also made the prophets pleasure from his pleasure as mentioned in the qurán in surah at-tawbah verse 62 :it is more fitting that they should please Allah and his Messenger.

Another aspect of the beloved habibs ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, greatness is extracted from verse 81 of surah al imran:Behold!Allah took the covenant of the prophets, saying: I give you a book and wisdom ,then comes to you a messenger, confirming what is with you ;do you believe in him and render him help?Allah said:do you agree and take this covenant as binding on you?’they said:we agree.’ He said : “then bear witness and I am with you among the witnesses. In the interpretation of this verse Sayyidina Imam Al Ali  and Sayyidina Abdullah ibn Abbas  stated that Allah, subhanah wa taala ,did not send any prophet with a message from himself until he took from him a covenant that if he sent Muhammed ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, while he was alive he would believe in him and render him help and commanded him that he would also take the covenant of his people that if Muhammed ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, was sent while they were alive they would believe in him and support him.

Another verse of the qurán showing the prophets, salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, superiority and honour with his lord is that he used to give him without him asking: Allah the most high says “we see the turning of thy face to the heavens: now shall we turn thee to a qiblah that shall please thee so turn thy face to the direction of the sacred musjid” (al-baqarah: 144). Ibn al hajr in fath al Bari speaks about this fact at length about the turning of the qiblah and he concludes “this denotes the dignity and honour the prophet held in his lords regards, for he gave him what he wished for without him actually asking for it

Furhthermore Allah subhanah wa ta'ala honoured his prophet ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, by addressing him or speaking about him gently in a way that reflects His love for him. When addressing the other prophets in direct speech Allah the absolute addresses them by their names but when addressing his beloved it was never by his name but by terms such as o’prophet or o’my messenger reflecting his love for him. There are many chapters in the glorious qurán that illustrates the prophets greatness ,perfect character ,morality and his favoured position granted to him by Allah in this life and the next. Also Allah the most high does not join his creation in any form of worship or action except in the sending of blessings upon his beloved as mentioned in the holy qurán surah al ahzab verse 56 : Allah and his angels send blessings on the prophet so o you who believe send blessings upon the prophet and salute him with all respect.

Not only is the Prophet, salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, superior but the very earth that he walked upon became honourable and superior as Allah subhanah wa ta'ala states in the holy qurán in surah al-balad verse 1-2:
I swear by this city in which you dwell(makkah) (not because it contains the kaabah) but by the virtue of you living in this city.

There are numerous verses in the holy Qurán that illustrate the grandeur of the noble Rasool ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, but to the heart that has in it love for the beloved these few suffice.

THE PROPHET ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, GREATNESS PROVEN FROM THE SUNNAH

On the authority of Abu hurairah  the Prophet ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, was reported to have said : I am the master of the sons of Adam on the day of resurrection ,the first who will awake ,the first who will be granted intercession and the first whose intersession will be accepted . (1)

Sayyidina Anas  reported that the beloved Habib ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, said : I will be the first of people to awake on the day of qiyamah and I will speak on their behalf when they assemble before Allah and I will bear glad tidings to them when they despair. The standard of praise will be in my hand and I am the most honourable from amongst the sons of Adam at the sight of my lord and I say this with no boast. Ibn al Anbari when commenting on this hadith says ‘it means that the Rasool is not boasting about these merits but is letting the ummah know of how Allah has honoured him.(2)

Sayyidina Anas  reports that on the night of mi’raj the Buraq (a mount) was brought to him ready to be ridden on. At first the Buraq was hesitant so jibril said to the Buraq. Why are you hesitant. By Allah no rider has ever mounted you who is more honourable in the sight of Allah than him(Muahmmed ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam,).(3)

Also for us to be labeled as true believers we have to place the love for the Rasool ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, above everything else including our own selves as mentioned in the hadith “none of you truly believes unless he loves me more than his own self.

Also in physical appearance the Rasool ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, was superior. Jaabir ibn Samurah  said :I saw the prophet ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, on a moonlit night. I looked at him and at the moon but he was more beautiful than the moon in my eyes.(4). Abu Hurairah  once remarked ‘I have never seen anything more beautiful than the messenger of Allah ;it is as if the sun ran on his forehead”.(5). Commenting on these ahadiths Shaykh al Ghazzali said :the light of his essence was reflected on his face so purity could obviously be recognized on his features. A persons mental and ethical features cannot be recognized merely with a hasty look but material marks often reflect the true essence of ones pure soul(6)

The Prophet ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, enjoyed such qualities of perfection that no creation has ever enjoyed. As for the perfection of his morals it suffices for us that Allah, subhanah wa taala, states “and thou (are) on an exalted standard of character(al-qalam). It is for this reason that the mother of the believers Sayyidah Aísha once said “his character was(according to)the qurán.

Another great honour that was bestowed on the beloved rasool, salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, is that his name is mentioned whenever the name of Allah subhanah wa ta'ala is mentioned. This is no coincidence but a divine ordinance from Allah subhanah wa ta'ala showing us the status of his beloved. Al allama al hafiz Jalaludeen abd ar rahman as Suyuti in his monumental masterpiece al khasais al kubra quotes ahadiths pertaining to this fact. As narrated by Sayyidina Umar ibn Al Khattab that one day the beloved rasool, salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, said :when Adam committed the mistake (eating of the forbidden fruit which led to his expulsion from paradise)and after years of asking Allah for forgiveness one day said to Allah o’my lord by the truth of Muhammad forgive me. Allah asked and how do you know of Muhammad so Adam replied: when you created me by your hands, and blew in me from your spirit I lifted my head and I saw written on the base of your divine throne there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger of Allah and I learnt from this that you would not place any creations name next to yours except if he was the most dearest to you. And Allah subhanah wa ta'ala replied “you have spoken the truth o’adam if there was no Muhammad I would not have created you”. Abu Hurairah narrated that the beloved Habib, salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, once said: when I ascended to the skies there was not a space in the skies in which there was not written Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And as narrated by Sayyidina Jaabir that the Rasool ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, said it is written on the doors of paradise there is no god but Allah, Muhammad is his messenger.

These few pages are sufficient proof of the superiority of the Rasool ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, to the hearts of the believers. Just like any other article or books written on the greatness of the Habib ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, its resemblance is to a pin to the vast ocean. We as mere mortals cannot grasp his true essence as it is known only to Allah ta'ala. But what we have written we ask Allah subhanah wa ta'ala ,our creator ,to open our hearts and place in our hearts the love for His beloved ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, and we ask Allah to open the hearts of the blind amongst us who are lost in their own created web of deceit so that they can try to comprehend the mastery of the Rasool ,salla allahu alayhi wa sallam, and by accepting his superiority instilling in their barren hearts a light of love to illuminate the darkness created by them. Ameen.

Al Wazi b Amir  said : we came and it was said ‘that is the messenger of Allah’. We took his hands and feet and we kissed them. As mentioned in Al Adab al Mufrad by Imam Al Bukhari  .
