    What is a tag?

A tag is a way to notate a book with a descriptor so that later you can easily find the book. Shelfari users often tag their books so that they can easily find them on their shelves. Examples of tags might be: history, China, literary fiction, or humor.

Shelfari maintains a list of the tags that are the most used by Shelfari members. You can find this list at the following URL:

    http://www.shelfari.com/books/tags.

These are the tags we use for Play Book Tag. Each month, a tag is chosen and most members read a book that fits the tag.

An alternative way to navigate to the list of tags is:

    1. Click the Book Tab.
    2. Scroll down to the section entitled Book Tags.
    3. Click on the tiny link in that section that reads "More Tags", and it will bring you to the list of the Top 200 tags on Shelfari.

How are the tags chosen for each month?

Each month a person is randomly selected to choose the tag for the following month.

If a person wishes to choose the tag, they must signup to do so between the 15th and 22nd of the month.

We choose someone at random from the list of folks who sign up.

How do I find books that fit the tag?

Shelfari conveniently provides a listing of the books that fit a particular tag. To see the listing, visit the following URL:

    http://www.shelfari.com/books/tags

    or

    1. Select the Book tab.
    2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see a selection of tags.
    3. There is a tiny link that says "More Tags", click on it to bring you to the Top 200 tags.

Click on any of the tags, and a list of the most popular books that fit the tag will be displayed.

How can I participate in Play Book Tag?

There are many opportunities to participate in Play Book Tag, but there are pretty much no requirements.

From the least commitment to the most commitment, here are some of the ways you may participate:

    1) You may simply join in our discussions if there is a tag that interests you, and you've got something to say about it.

    2) You may read a book with us that fits the tag. This is the way most Play Book Tag members participate. They select a book that fits the tag for the month and read it!

    3) You may read a book that fits the tag and share your rating and review of the book. Many, many of our members do this. We always have a monthly discussion entitled Collective Reads for our Shelf. As people read books for the tag, they tell us what they've read and give it a 1 to 5 star rating. Our wonderful volunteers then put the book on our shelf for you along with your user name and your rating.

    4) You may participate in our monthly activites. We have certain activities that we do or "play" each month i.e. "The Recommendation Game" and "Meet, Greet, and Be Sweet", and "The Taggies". These activites are meant to be enjoyable and also to help us all get to know one another.

    5) You may participate in our larger and longer term games. These usually require advanced signup and significant commitment on the part of the players. These opportunities come up less frequently.

Is there a minimum number of books I must read to be a member of Play Book Tag?

Absolutely not! We welcome any and all levels of commitment. I will say that we have some member who are very prolific readers who will read more than 10 books that fit the tag.

And then there's folks like me . . .lucky to finish ONE!!

Absolutely! You may read any book that appeals to you and that fits the tag.

How do I know if my book fits the tag?

Each book on Shelfari has a detail page. You can see an example of that page by clicking on any book on your shelf.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the detail page, you can see a list of the tags that are most commonly used to describe that particular book.

So, let's say our tag was mystery. You'd go to the detail page for the book in question, and scroll to the bottom. Then, look at the tags that are most commonly used to describe the book and see if "mystery" is used.

Why aren't there any books on your group shelf?

The group shelf that Shelfari provides has very little in the way of features so we've opted not to use it. Instead we have a dummy user account called Play Book Tag - - and we use the shelf that is associated with that account.

By using that shelf, we have the capability to add ratings, reviews, and tags to our books. It is a fabulous shelf with many terrific recommendations, and I encourage you to check it out.

    The URL is:

What is Meet, Greet, and Be Sweet?

Meet, Greet, and Be Sweet is a monthly ice breaker designed to help you meet and get to know other Play Book Tag members.

    Here's how it works.

If you've ever participated in a discussion thread, you know it is pretty linear with each person posting below another.

If you go to the Meet, Greet, and Be Sweet discussion thread, you will see a whole list of people who have played. You should visit the shelf of the very last person on the list, and then leave them a note that somehow references a book that fits our tag. You can comment on a book they have that fits the tag. You can make a recommendation for a book. You can ask them a question about something they've read. Basically, you can write whatever you want that pertains to the monthly tag.

Once you've done that, you should leave your name at the bottom of the Meet, Greet and Be Sweet discussion.

Then, the next person who visits the discussion thread will visit you and leave you a note on your shelf!!

I read a book for the tag. How do I get it on our shelf?

Each month we have a discussion entitled:

(Month)Tag: Our Collective reads for Our Shelf

Please simply post the book you've read for the tag under this discussion plus your rating of the book. You may also leave a mini review.

Kristal is our Shelf Administrator and can answer any questions about our shelf.

    What is the Recommendation Game?

This activity takes place on a single discussion thread, entitled "The Recommendation Game" or something to that effect.

We usually play this game each month.

In order to play, you must recommend a book to the person who has last posted to the thread entitled Recommendation Game.

    The rules are:

    1) You must recommend a book that fits the tag of the month.
    2) You should try your best to recommend a book that is NOT on the person's shelf already.

Then, after you've decided upon your recommendation, you post it on the discussion thread. The next person who comes along to "play" will make a recommendation for you!

I came across your group in the middle of the month. Can I still participate?

Absolutely!! You can start a book that fits the tag of the month at any time. It's nice if it gets finished by the end of the month so you can read the next tag with us . . .but even that isn't so important. We just want you to join us, participate, and have fun!

What is the You Must Choose activity?

This is another activity that takes place using the discussion threads. It always pertains to the tag of the month.

The first person in the discussion provides a choice of two books. The next person chooses which book they prefer and posts it to the discussion, and then in the same post, lists a choice of their own. So the thread looks something like the following example:

    PERSON A:

Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz?

    PERSON B:

    The Wizard of Oz

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix or Eragon?

    What are participation points?

Everyone in the group is going to be eligible to earn "participation points".

These will be awarded by the administrators.

We will award them to people who participate in our games and activities, but who don't necessarily win a prize. We will award them for people who start discussions that turn out to be especiallly popular. We will award them to people who respond frequently to others or who comment often on the reviews of others. We will reward them to people who read multiple books for a tag and post good reviews.

Each participation point will give you an additional entry into the drawing for selecting the monthly tag. For example, if a member had three participation points as of Sept. 22nd, her name would be entered three additional times (for a total of four) for the random drawing. This gives her higher odds of being the person chosen to select the tag.

We may also award offer other items or privileges from time to time in exchange for your participation points.

This is our way of saying thank you and rewarding those members who keep this group fun and hopping!!

    What is Lay It On?
    What is Last Tagger Standing?
What is Tag It to the Max?
    What is Capture the Tag

We periodically have had one larger challenge for our members. Each of these challenges has been more involved and has awarded prizes for its winners. Competing in these challenges is completely optional, and you can still participate in Play Book Tag actively without doing these challenges. Each challenge has it's own set of rules. Some are team challenges and some are individual.

Our next challenge is likely to start in February, 2009.

If I understand correctly Priscilla, you need to read the book the month of the tag. You can reread a book that you've read before, but you shouldn't count it unless you actually reread it during the month of the tag.

Deb, eventually Nicole will be around to help you out. In the meantime, the best place to start right now is to find a book that would fit October's tag, which is England. You would read the book, then come back here and post a review and star rating for the book in the October Collective Reads for the Month thread. Hope that helps! This group is really a lot of fun!

Hi Shirley. As of November 1, the monthly tag changed over to "poetry".

Lay It On is a game that started October 1, and I believe it runs until November 19. It's too late for new people to join in, so hopefully you'll stick around for the next big game, and in the meantime, you can still take part in reading for the monthly tag (and any games that go along with that). Have fun!

Deb~ Great question! For the monthly tag, we are fairly flexible with what you read: poetry, about a poet, has a character that loves poetry...all of these would count! However, if you are playing Lay It On, then the book has to be tagged poetry on Shelfari! I hope this helps :)

How do shelf ratings work for books that more than one person has rated? I see that the reviews maintain the original star count, but what about the stars on the bookshelf? Do they change for each reviewer or do they stay the same from the first review?

    • LibraryCin

      LibraryCin

If you are just looking at the stars, it is only entered for the first person who reviewed it. If you want to know more, you'll have to look at the reviews. After the first person, we copy and paste the number of stars (along with the review) for each person after that. At least that's how I was doing it...

Shoot - I wonder if Kristal has been averaging them as well? hmmmm - maybe I'll need to go back and fix all the dragon ones I did for that month! (And the few poetry ones I filled in for Kristal when she was away!)

      posted 1 year ago. ( reply )
    • againstthetide

      againstthetide

lol, well ideally, the stars should be averaged (roughly - - you need not get out a calculator or anything). I suspect that going back and redoing the stars might be a tad onerous, so if you could please do so going forward, Kristal, that would be great.

Anita - I won't have time to do it right away, but I will go back and fix the dragon ones for sure. There weren't that many dragon books that were read overall, and of course, not all the books need to be averaged if only one person read it, so I don't think it would be too difficult. Now, why didn't I think of that - or ask about it - to begin with! It makes sense... Jeez, I'm brilliant! ;-)

Sorry, just now catching this. Along with a new formatting of the reviews, most of the star rating is an average of all the readers opinions. Trying to catch up on 10 months of reviews is a daunting task, so there might be a few odd ones that we haven't done yet. But yes, we have been averaging them. :0)

If it's for the monthly tag, it's fine- we aren't terribly strict about it. If it were for a game it would have to match exactly. Just tag the book as music yourself when you are done.

Shuva~ You are absolutely right, there will be a new tag for the month of February. The admins will start giving hints to what it is in a few days and then we will officially announce it a couple of days before Feb 1 (so you can start planning your reads). This is the same format we follow every month so you can look forward to that :)

I am a little confused about the excel sheet, are you referring to the one that was provided for Capture the Tag? If so, that spreadsheet was designed for that game only so now that it has concluded, the excel sheet is obsolete. We will not be doing anything else with it in the near future.

I hope this helped and let me know if you have any further questions! :)

You know I don't even know why I'm asking this... 200 months is like *thinks* 16-17 years or something....... WOW... but you know what, I love this group and I think that if it's still around then, I'll still be trying to keep up!

Well we won't do any duplicates until after the first three years of playing, and the tags did change a few times in the past year, so if we are still plating in 16 years, we'll have lots to choose from ;0)

Considering the number of duplicates just because of spelling variations, there are actually less than 200 to choose from.

You know, I just realized that "banned book(s)" are not part of the Top 200. That sort of makes me sad, as I think it's important to read challenged books, just because they have been challenged. Freedom of speech and all that.

Does anyone know if it is possible to search for multiple tags at once? Like if I want a book that is tagged historical fiction and also tagged Ireland. I know something like "Ireland Historical Fiction" or "Irish Historical fiction" might be options, but they might not bring up all the books with both of those tags, you know?

The Last Tagger Standing is almost at the half-way mark and is no longer open to new players. However you can join in our tag for the month- read a chick lit book and post a review. You can post a review of any other book you read that isn't tagged chick lit. By doing this you are entered into our raffle, or earn participation points that can be used for other things. Or just participate in the discussions. This game will run through the end of March, and a new one will begin soon after that.

    1. I hope this is an ok place to ask this.

    2. I am confused about the Bunny Hop thing. We post our reviews in our hop discussion or in the general discussion and just say we finished it in the hop discussion?

    3. I'm a little disappointed if it is only in the hop thread, I'm lazy and don't want to click through everyone's discussion to find out about the awesome books they read.

At the top of each monthly review discussion there is an explanation about what is posted where. Friendship tagged books are posted in both the personal thread, and the group thread. Any other books read for Bunny Hop are posted only in the personal thread, and not the monthly. Only if the book not tagged friendship is read outside of your Bunny Hop would it be posted in the group thread.

I sympathize with your frustration because I feel the same way. However, the admins did it that way so that they could more accurately keep track of participation points for each member, and not risk double awarding points. So, while frustrating, I totally understand and feel that it is a necessary evil :-)

Sandeep, I would suggest just starting out with the monthly tag first. Don't worry about joining in to the other extra games until you get the hang of it a little more.

May's tag will be announced shortly. Then, you'll just want to choose a book that fits that tag and read it. When you're done, come back here and post your star rating and review to the monthly tag reviews thread, and you're done! That's the main gist of it. The rest of it is all extra!

Welcome and I hope that helps!

Quilter, I wouldn't worry about the bunny hop anymore. It was a game we played that just ended (though a few of us will continue on). If you want to read the bunny hop threads anyway, they will consist of reviews, so even if you don't know how the game worked, you might still want to take a look at the threads for those of us continuing on.

Anita (againstthetide) would be the one to tell you how many participation points you have.

    Katherine;

Bunny Hop is a game we were playing for the last 6 weeks, but it is over now, so you need not worry about it.

If you have posted a review to the thread: Reviews of Books in May That Are Not Tagged Suspense (every month this will change, reflecting books that are not relevant to our monthly tag) you will receive 1 participation point. Each review will earn you another. There are often other items tat will get you PP's- they will vary from month to month and are clearly mentioned at the start of every month. These points can be used to increase your chances of getting to pick the monthly tag. Anita (againstthetide) keeps the tally on these, so any questions you have regarding your status can be directed to her.

Any time you post to our Collective Reads for Our Shelf thread your name is entered into the monthly raffle to win a $15 gift certificate to Amazon -you are allowed a maximum of 5 entries per month - you can post as many reviews you like, but your name can only be entered into the raffle 5 times.

Hope I helped a little, don't hesitate to post more questions.

If I'm not mistaken (please someone correct me if I'm wrong), participation points are mostly received from posting in the "books not tagged" for the month thread. Books that you read for the monthly tag count for entries into the raffle, and you do get multiple entires for that, but they don't count for participation points.

      Did that make sense?

Here's how the reward system works:

If you read a book that fits the tag and post a review of it in the appropriate pinned thread, you will be eligible for a drawing to win a $15 Amazon gift certificate. Reading multiple books does not increase your chances of being in the raffle. We consider reading one book that fits the tag sort of the "price of admission" here at PBT. We hope that all the members will do that even if they do nothing else! If you read more, we will be very happy as we'll have more great books to discuss with you :).

If you read books that do not fit the tag, we really like to hear about them. We view sharing that information as "extra" and as an incentive we will give you one participation point for every book you read and review. The reviews must be posted in the appropriate pinned thread (the one for books not tagged). These participation points up your chances of being selected to choose the monthly tag. If you sign up to choose the tag, we will put your name "in the hat" one extra time for each participation point you have. Everyone is eligible for the drawing though so you can get your name in once even if you have no points. Once your points are used in the drawing, they are gone . . .so some people save them up for a few months while others use them every month.

Please let me know if this helps??

      A minor correction here:

For every review you write that fits the tag of the month your name is entered into the raffle. If you write multiple reviews your name is entered multiple times, with a limit of 5 entries. You may still submit reviews, and we welcome them, but your name will only be entered a maximum of 5 times.

I was wondering if it's allowed to read another version of one of the books under the monthly tag?
This October, the tag is contemporary fiction, if I haven't misunderstood. When I click on the tag several books are listed, and one of them is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. What I was wondering, was if I can read that book, but in Norwegian? Or do I have to read the book in English?

Mary Ellen, I think (though I'm not positive), that if you post a discussion thread, you are able to delete it initially, but only until someone replies to it. Once someone has replied, I think it's only admins of the group who are able to delete. I'm not positive of this, but I thought I heard or read that somewhere.

I agree that that post was disrespectful, and like others here, I did notice that it was someone who I've never seen post anything before.
