    The Amazing Read

The Amazing Read is our new challenge that will be starting on August 1st. It is a team competition and an individual competition combined into ONE challenge. We don't have every i dotted and t crossed yet, but I'll give you enough info so that hopefully you'll be excited to sign up.

The Amazing Read will consist of five legs and a finale.

    Leg 1: England, China
    Leg 2: Japan, France
    Leg 3: Scotland, America
    Leg 4: Africa, Ireland
    Leg 5: India, Italy
Finale: Three countries to be determined

All of the countries in the first five legs currently have tags in the top 200 tags.

    Team Competition

Readers will be paired up into teams of two by the administrators. For each leg of the race, one person must read a book under the tag of the first country and the other person must read a book under the tag of the second country in the leg and write reviews. There may also be challenges in some or all of the legs that must be completed to win.

The first team to complete the leg will automatically move to the finale and cannot participate (competitively) in the subsequent legs. The finale will have five teams racing to the finish. There will be some constraints on the types and lengths of books you may read (i.e. a children's book won't qualify).

Each leg of the race will be conducted individually and have specific start date and time. Teams may select which legs to do, or they may do all of the legs (unless they win one).

    Individual Competition

In addition, readers may also participate in an individual competition. The top three winners of the individual competition will select the countries that will be used in the finale.

In broad strokes, individuals will be reading a book from each of the ten country tags. There may be challenges that permit them to skip some of the tags along the way. For each read, the individual must write a review.

Winning the individual challenge will depend on the following criteria:

    1. Individuals will need to finish all ten reads within a set timeframe to qualify to win.

Then, if they qualify, the winners will be selected based upon

    2. Earning bonus points by reading books that also fit the monthly PBT tag
    3. Earning bonus points by completing challenges
    3. Writing high quality reviews (there will be voting for the best reviewer for all of those folks who do finish the ten reads in the prescribed time frame).

Prizes will be awarded to both the winning team and the top individual competitors.

Interesting! Will need to ponder if I want to jump into this one, depending on how my other reading goes this month for some of the other challenges I'm trying to wrap up.

I would love to join in this competition, but anything that requires a fast reading pace is not a competition for me. I try to read as much as I can, but just don't have the time that others do. Sounds like a fun competition though.

I'm a slow reader too, Jeremiah, but I wouldn't let that stop you from participating.

There may be some consolation prizes this go around since we know the team winners may be more fast paced readers ;). And of course we'd love to have your reviews about books from the various countries.

Plus, you will be good at the challenges I bet!

I understand that others are slow as well, but I do not want to be a burden to a teammate. I cannot stand to lose all chance of winning something just because of who I get paired with. If I can get some books read for the categories I will post reviews.

Darn, I lost my post. I was saying, Jeremiah, that even though you may be a slow reader (like me) that you won't be much of a burden unless your teammate is an ultracompetitive player who has to win. Me, I'm just playing for the fun of it. The added challenges sound like a lot of fun as well. Of course I will be increasing my reading pace with the book I choose but I will still be slow compared to some of the other competitors. I'm just hoping the person I am teamed up with is playing for fun too! Oh well, there will be many other competitions for you to compete in later on.

Sign me up, too! If this is anything like The Amazing Race we'll be in for a bumpy ride. I'm interested to find out what other restrictions there will be for what we read. At this stage one only has to find and read the shortest book that's not a children's book. Each leg would be finished pretty quickly if that's case.

      lol . . .yeah, Justin!!

Sorry to break the news, but there will be more restrictions on the books that will qualify for the team competition. These will be specified later. I just wanted to give you enough to go on for sign up.

The individual competition will be less restrictive than the team one in terms of what you may read.

But I encourage everyone to participate regardless because win or lose, it's going to be fun ;).

I'm going to have to check my browser at home to see if I can get the tag search to work properly. Ever since Shelfari changed how they display books from paginated to the "show more books" option, I've been having a problem with moving past that first page of suggestions. My browser usually freezes when I try and click the link.

If it doesn't work for me on GoogleChrome at home, I can't join this challenge.

      Jen,

The good news is that they revamped the display again. It's paginated now and is working much, much better. I use Google Chrome too, and I couldn't get past page #1 before either. It's all fixed!

It definitely only shows the "show more books" option for me here at work, and clicking the link does nothing but lock me up.

I'll try it on Chrome when I get home (hey I rhymed), and will keep you posted.

      So you are clicking on:

      1. Explore
      2. Tags
      3. the tag of your choice i.e. china

      Correct?

My guess is that somehow your work computer is holding onto a cached page and the cache needs to be cleared in order for you to access the current page. The format you describe is no longer in use . . .

Let me know when you get home how it goes. I really don't have the expertise to troubleshoot a work computer because it is probably on a big network with all sorts of security, but I think I can get the home one to work.

No I am using the tag:<tag name> in the search field. It pulls up a front page but then when I select show more books, it hangs.

We haven't decided exactly how long each leg is going to last (one of the details we are still working out) but I would say there is a chance it will go over a month but not by much...we'll definitely make sure we give a tentative ending date before closing the sign-ups!

I suspect the first five legs will go quickly.

The finale will have to be scheduled after the individual competition completes. Since only 10 people (five teams) will be involved, we will be able to solicit input on specific start dates for it.

In some ways, this challenge is more like a series of challenges that are linked . . .and really people can participate in none or one or more depending on their interest.

If you really got stuck and couldn't do the finale, your partner could find a sub.

Many can play and only a few can win, but the joy is in the journey!!

As a road racer, I NEVER win. But there are so many benefits along the way - - training, racing - - that I never regret participating.

I was really envisioning everyone playing in teams. The idea was that even if your team wasn't competitive, your reading wouldn't be for naught because it could be applied to the individual competition.

However, I'm willing to be flexible if someone really is averse to participating in the team competition.

We will be in California for a week, and then we are driving from California to Utah for my husband's youngest sister's wedding. Then from Utah we are heading back to Ohio.

I have to giggle a little bit because at least half the people, whether they read like lightning speed or are more turtles (like myself), have expressed the concern that they'd let down their team member with their reading.

I'm thinking that everyone is going to have so much empathy that there's little chance anyone is going to be let down by their partner.

From experiencing some of the past challenges, I think speed is only going to be one factor. It sounds like clever strategy is definitely coming in to play in some fashion as well.

One of my personal challenges is going to be trying to rely only on stuff I already have for the game, and not resort to the library at all. We'll see how well that goes.

Good thing I LIKE trashy romances LOL.

Seriously though, there are a lot of non-trashy romances and other novels set in Scotland. For instance, Three Junes springs to mind. The entire Outlander series is tagged Scotland also, but those are so long that they wouldn't be quick reads for most people.

      I have three books set in Scotland that are not romance, they are all mysteries;

The Distant Echo by Val McDermid - rated 3*** (good, not great)

One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson- rated 4 *** ( very good) (this is the second book in a series, but you need not read the first book Case Histories to enjoy it, although you should 'cause it's a terrific book unfortunately set in England not Scotland)

The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell 4.5**** (excellent) a very fast read about a young woman who finds out she has an aunt she never knew, who has been in a mental institution for 60 years. Very Gothic like read.

Reviews for all three on my shelf.

That's like 600 pages of non-fiction and from the title I hear it has a lot to do with the murder of Lord Darnley (which is why I want to read it). I dunno that that one is for everyone. However, I do own it and thus it's one of my possibilities for this tag... I also own a Plaidy on Henry VIII's sisters that I may one day get to. Plaidys are good for channeling my aggression (Stupid woman! Why did you write 12 books a year without doing a second of research!?!?!?). I also own Trainspotting but have no idea where it is.

I'm someone else reads Mary, Quieen of Scots, and the Murder of Lord Darnley by Weir with me, that may be the push I need. Cindy? Nicole? Any takers? ; )

Tenia, we'll probably wait to assign teams for a couple of reasons. 1) We want to have everyone signed up so we can make the teams as even as possible and 2) giving out teams now definitely gives an advantage and we don't want to penalize members who are currently hesitant or members that will (hopefully) be joining PBT soon! :)

All the time. But I don't know how much I will get to charge my ipod so I don't know how long I will be able to go listening to it. We are camping most of the time so when we stop for meals I might charge my laptop/ipod but I just don't know how often that will be possible.

My boyfriend has a V-Storm 1000 (we're riding two-up). It is a duel sport so we can do a little bit of dirt roads if needed. It should be a very fun trip. Thanks for all the comments everyone! We are both super excited about the trip! We haven't set any time and date destinations, just ride as long as we feel like and then find somewhere to camp or a hotel to stay and we're good. We are hoping to have a ton of fun.

Cin, we are really hoping to make it all the way to Banff but we want to see how interesting Manitoba is too - and it seems a little hard to find good information about that part of Canada. It looks really cool with all the lakes and such, so we might get delayed there if it is really interesting.

Kristal, my boyfriend loves his strom. :) Do you ride with your husband? I have a ton of fun riding on the back and taking pictures/video the whole way.

Clock, we are going up near Lake Superior (near Ironwood...but in WI)...and then riding the loop around to Thunder Bay and heading west.

I can't tell you much about Manitoba, but I grew up in Saskatchewan. The #1 highway is the most flat, boring part of Sask, but if you go north, there are also lots of lakes and forests up there. If you wanted to end up at Jasper rather than Banff, you might want to head north in Sask (if you make it that far) before heading east to Jasper. Just something to think about.

You all wouldn't believe how hard it has been to find a book on Canada here. We went over to the B&N two days ago because going through so much of Canada is a recent change (due to an unforeseen change in who we were visiting). Anyway, we found three road maps of Canada... three. Only one of them even covered Alberta and the rest... Vancouver and Toronto. So we looked at books. If you want to go to eastern Canada or the Vancouver area they have about 50 books combined but we felt that according to the bookstore, central Canada does not exist. We decided it was like the best kept secret like Wyoming is here in the states (We've found some amazing places in there and even Nevada that you wouldn't believe but finding information on those places is pretty hard until you're there).

Oh! That's so sad... I would think you could find something on Alberta at least - Banff, Canmore, Jasper, the mountains!!!! Saskatchewan and Manitoba are not tourist hotspots - even in Canada, people think they are boring (see #1 highway through Sask, and that's why - that's what most people see, which is why I thought you might be more interested a little further north. Saskatoon is a beautiful city). You might have to find something online. I'll try to remember to take a few minutes (after I'm all caught up with the messages here) and see if I can find anything for you.

May i make a suggestion and I dont know if this is tried before on PBT but wat if Players have the ability to choose their team members?, given that this time its in pairs, this way for instance some on can piar up with their peers, Shelfari friends, sisters, husband, wife ect..
For example I know someone who is not big on team playing but she said once or twice she wouldnt mind if it was like just the two of us. This will help encourage other team memebers to play maybe even other people to join the group.

    Its just a suggestion =)

I think it might be a little more "fair" to keep it random. A couple reasons - someone may not know someone else well enough to feel comfortable approaching them to be their partner. Also, you could end up with super-speedy readers on the same team (which could still happen randomly, but...).

      Just my thoughts.

      Diane,

We haven't set a deadline for joining yet, but it will be at least a week before August 1st, in order for us to put teams together, post rules and answer all the questions that come up when everything is 'official'

Can we do both the team and the individual competition? (I want to be on a team, but I'd also like to read all 10 books.)

If so, do we have to read them in the specific order for the individual game? I'm wondering because I would want to give priority to the team competition, and then go back and fill in the ones I missed for the individual competition once I've completed what I need to do for the team.

Sorry if someone else has already asked this question. I'm studying for my final exam and don't have time to read all the entries!

There will be 5 'team legs', in a certain order. Each leg will have a winner, so five teams will move into the finals, but if your team doesn't move on you are still playing as an individual. So you try your best for your team, but also for yourself if your team doesn't move on because you are still playing- I hope that makes sense. Those teams that make it to the finals are playing as a team only, everyone else is then playing individually.

Kim, the way I understand it... if you are only playing as part of a team (and not playing individually), you will only be reading one from each set. However, if you also plan to play individually, you will be reading all of them.

I had previously signed up for this but would like to be removed from the game if it's not too much trouble.

I'd like to watch from the Sidelines this time. Looking at the tags there isn't much from my TBR pile for these, and Im trying to focus on my mountain of books that I already have this summer.

    Thanks!

    The Amazing Read

Here's a list of everyone I think is playing. Please double check and make sure you are on it! I'm hoping to work on teams this weekend so please let me know if you are planning on playing if you don't see your name on the list. Some folks went back and forth, and I'm not totally sure where they ended up. And there's so many messages I'm very afraid I've missed folks.

Is this like a relay, in which the first teammate must finish their book before the second person can begin reading his or her book? Or can both team members read their books at the same time?

you can both read at the same time. With your partner you can choose who will read what - remember that you can choose which legs you wish to participate in, or you can do all the legs. Once your team wins a leg they do not have to complete another and automatically move on to the Team Finale.

How much time is there for each leg? Does each team need to finish before the new leg is begun or do we start a new leg once someone wins the current one?

Anita, I wonder what the constraints for the type and the length of a book we read for the challenge will be? So we should not read children's books. Are there other restrictions we need to pay attention to?

    Sara and kolibri,

I will be posting more explicit details about the first leg of the race - - hopefully by tonight.

It will answer both of your questions! I think I already know the answers, but am conferring with my fellow admins to make sure we are all in agreement.
