Name that kitten
Started by Clarity, Monday, July 7 2008. Last post 2 weeks ago.

I just adopted a kitten. Now it needs an Anglophile name. The wackier the merrier.
To make things more fun, the following rules must be observed:

1. The name should have two syllables.

2. It cannot contain any of the following letters - B, D, G, P, Q, U.

3. The preferred letters are - L, S, R.

Any ideas?

Araminta. It was a name in William Congreve's 1693 comedic play "The Old Bachelor".

Araminta is nice but the name needs to be two syllables only. Cats have short attention span. I could shorten it to Minty. That's a possibility.

Ivor if it's a boy.

This doesn't contain the preferred letters.. but what about Emma?
Or: Evie (short for Evelyn), Lily, Satin, Fergie (former duchess), Alice .. still going to think on this..
Congrats on your new kitty! Mr Fuzz (my own kitty) sends his own regards as well.
Oops.. just realized Fergie contains letter G.. strike that one.

Preferred letters are not compulsory, but if you can think of a name that contains one or more of them it's a bonus.

You didn't tell us the gender!
I think if it is male, you should name him Raleigh.
If it's female, Clarissa (sorry, that's three syllables. But an excellent name.)

The kitten is a female, but the name doesn't have to be gender specific. What is important is Anglophile allusions, cultural or literary connotations, stuff like that.

Edeline or Lorna?
(I know Edeline is three, not two... but still- unique...) and Lorna came to me while opening a bag of cookies...

I've got four names for you- but each breaks one of the rules. Nonetheless, in no particular order:
Edith (with a short E)
Agnes
Beatrice/ Beatrix (Trixy for short)
Winifred (Winnie for short)

Oooh, I love names!

OK, if we're going with a literary theme, how about:

Christie (for the obvious, Agatha)
Sherlock (chuckles!)
Shelley (Mary)
Percy
Charlotte
Austen
Bertie (as in, Wooster)

and my favorite:

JaneEyre (yeah - one word, two syllables)

For the sheer BRITISH-ness, try:

Molly
Ruby
Lady

and the one you should choose:

Fergie !

:D

My dear Duchess, you'd much better kill it unless you plan to de-claw the creature. It will ruin the furniture.

How bloodthirsty of you, Baroness. You probably would eat it too.

Funny, I expected you to wear only black and white.
Oh, excuse me. That's just Holstein. The Duke has a large herd of them on our castle farm.

I'd set the dogs on it if I were you, my dear.

Yes, I get get a royalty payment on every Holstein born in Europe. I am still awaiting your cheque, but take your time, my dear, if funds are low.

I am toying with the idea of naming the kitten Holstein. She is black and white after all.
Or perhaps Rammstein, after the German band. Are they your relatives, Baroness?
I think I found your family photo on the internet.

I tried out a few names on the kitten - just to see if she reacts to the sound.
She seems to like 'hissing' sounds, like 's' or 'sh'.

Charlotte is the name that occurred to me some time ago when I thought of adopting a cat. I tried to use that name but found that it brings back the sad memory of a distant relative of the Duchess who drowned in a bucket of water after certain events at Manleigh Hall in the past spring.

Of course the name doesn't have to be from the literary realm only. I was surfing the web yesterday and stumbled on a site about the "Highlander" series.
I used to love that series. One of my favorite characters was Methos, the oldest of the Immortals.

How about Lucy? The only literary reference I can think of now is Miss Lucy Honeychurch. You can call her Miss Lucy - Lucy - or LuLu.

She looks like Elinor Kittyboots, (of Acquitaine?) or Ella for short, or Louise Mousehead, (Mousehead Revisited??) - another Lulu!

Or Dame Agnes Mousehead? Aggie for short.

Beatrice Furball? (I know, no B)

Cissy Kibbles?

Mewsette Sparrowmurder?? (Mewsie for short)

Mewsette Sparrowmurder is only for if she shows true killer tendencies, which I hope for the sake of the birdies in your barrio, that she does not. However, the less rodents the better, I always say, so maybe Agnes Mousehead is promising.

Clarity, you must know that the naming of a superior being, aka cat, is a delicate process, not one to be entered into lightly. One must observe said being in all her glorious moods, attend to the nuances of her voice, for a period of no less than two weeks. During said time, various nicknames are to be used on trial basis only, such as "kittywhiskers," "mittenkitten" and "queen of known universe."
She will let you know when you have attained the desired degree of familiarity and reverence by not biting the hand that pours the cat food.

May I suggest Chatterly, or Chatty for short? Then you must adopt a male kitten so he can grow up to be...Oscar Peterson...no, no, no, of course I meant Lady Chatterly's Lover. You could also go with Constance and Clifford for a nice pairing.

Since this thread has been around for a little while, pray tell, what DID you name the creature? :)

I tried out a bunch of names - kitty didn't even twitch an ear.
In the end I attempted to call her Methos - only as a joke, you understand - I didn't expect any response.

The kitty however sat up, looked at me with bright eyes and said, "What have you got for me?"

So that's how the kitten ended up with a name Methos, which was only a passing thought.
Now I don't know how many of you ever watched "Highlander" the series.
Methos appears in season 3. He is the oldest of the Immortals, 5000 years old. He has seen it all and has a cynical answer to everything. He is on the side of the good guys, but there is darkness inside him and evil deeds in his past.

Oh, and he is really cute - in a lean, gaunt kinda way. Not a pretty boy but I wouldn't mind bumping into him every century or so, for some pagan-flavored revelries.
