    4. Do you envision a finished product or just dance where the music takes you?

Both. If I am hit upside the head with an idea, I usually strive for the finished product I see. When I sit down to create, it usually just sort of 'evolves."

I generally do both also. I see it in my head, but it doesn't always come out that way. Sometimes it is better than I thought and other times it is just as good but different.

Both ~ even then the idea(s) tend to evolve themself ~ a creation takes on its own process ~ I tend to enjoy both and am very happy when the results are basically what I set out to do or something even better is created.

I take a really long time to start projects even when I have a vague idea in my head about what I want to do. I mull it over and over, then "bang!" -- something hits me and I am raring to go. It's like having a bunch of puzzle pieces and then seeing exactly where they fit together. Most often the finished product is somewhat like I first imagined. The techniques, colors or finishes I use to get there are often different than what I initially plan.

Carol put it well -- the ideas evolve....

Both for me. It depends on what the project is. It is never planned, though. The piece is usually formed when I decide that other things need to be added!

Your use of the word "dance" is appropriate from my point of view, as I see creation as a sacred dance of materials. Almost always it is the materials that inspire and direct the process. It seems at times that the collage or assemblage, etc. simply wants to be born into this universe, and I am there to act as the channel. Picasso said "Art is a leap into the dark." I would add that after the leap into the dark (the unknown), there is then a leap back into the light, and with the leap back one brings the thing created.

Well said ~ I am just beginning to do monoprints & this techique is a delight to work with as I paint onto the plexiglass surface ~ you can used brushes, palette knife, leaf from nature, lace, and on and on ~ creating is so spiritual to me as well ~ as you wrote "a sacred dance of materials" ~ what a wonderful way to express creating! Thanks.

Well said ~ & I particularly like the dance back into the light ~ It really seems all about the dance through the darkness to the light and back again, again, and again ~ circular ~
