Hanging In There

Hanging In There

When I was younger I had certain standards. For instance, I never wore suspenders or garters. Wasn’t cool, I figured.
That was before my midsection surrounded my hips and left nothing for my belt to cling to. Thus my pants slid down and covered my shoes. I spent a lot of time and energy hitching them up.
I had hitched them a couple of times the other day as I carried out a long-standing plan to clean out my bedroom closet. I found a pair of black suspenders hiding under an old sweatshirt. What were they doing there? Ah, I remembered. I wore them as part of a Halloween costume? A light went on. These things would hold up my pants and I could hide them by wearing ‘em under a shirt.

It was a pain snapping them to my pants but as I walked around the living room my pants stayed put.

Being cool at my age – I’m 84 – is much easier if my pants aren’t falling down.

I’m thinking of putting them on Nick Bancroft, the hero of my detective novels. He’s not that old but maybe it will give him character.

I would read all about Nick Bancroft if he started wearing suspenders because his pants fell down during an important detective-y interview. :)

Nick hears you and is now wearing suspenders.

Nick would never admit it if his pants did fall down during an interview, detective-y or otherwise. But feel free to read all about of the Nick Bancroft mysteries.
Regards, Bob

Hello Bob! You are a funny character. I have noticed several of your posts. Nice to meet you by the way! I am new on here (about 3 days new:) You remind me of my father. He is 73 and a character himself...makes me smile! He has written several books and when he showed them to me (written in his hen scratch on legal sized notepads) I just knew I had to help get them published. Wow did I jump into something that was way over my head, and being 6 foot tall made the fall to reality a long way down there lol. I believe we have a really good story and it fits into the real world of what is happening with our despondent government, NASA and the foreign policies of today, even though it is science fiction. We have a great marketing plan put together, getting our blogs up and running and reading, reading, reading! It has been a year now and even though we had an offer from a small publisher who wanted "exclusive rights", I feel we are still at square one. The more I read the more confusing all of this gets. Everyone wants something different and everyone has their opinions of agents, publishers and so on. I am interested in what you may have in the way of some advice. I respect my Dad and with age comes wisdom (at least he tells me that!). You sound like someone who may have more than most:) My question is...do you have any advice that might point us in a better direction than we are traveling at this moment? I hope I am not being too forward, but for someone who writes about keeping those pants up, well, that puts you in the cool category for me!

Debby B. I don't have any special insight on how to get an agent and or get a novel published. I got a list of agents from the internet, got some instructions from the internet on how to write a query and synopsis and sent the stuff to maybe 40 agents. None was interested. So I submitted my stuff to an internet publisher and now all of my books are only available from internet publishers like Renebooks.com, Fictionwise. com and others. Good luck, whatever direction you decide to go.

Thanks Bob L.:) I have read everything I can find on the internet for over a year now and have the query letter, synopsis, marketing plan, artwork and everything ready to go. I guess I will try sending it out a while longer and see what happens and if nothing then will most definitely try the internet publisher or something. I would just like to see one get published for him before anything happens to him. It would make him so happy. I don't want to do the Lulu thing but will if I have to just to get his book in print for him. I would do that but I think the story is too good for that. Anyway...thank you so much for your input dear! Have a great day!
