    beginning to become sad....

I fell in love with the Heralds of Valdemar Series after reading Exile's Honor. After that I started from the beginning and have slowly read them through chronologically. I just started the first book of the Mage Storms Series which means there are only 5 books left. :(
Do you any of you have any suggestions of where I should go next? I have loved these books because of the good values that she writes into her characters. Honor, since of purpose beyond one's self, for the common good, and respect for all people to name a few. I would very much like to find something similar but don't really know where to start. Unfortunately I have only started reading for recreation since my mid-thirties so as far as author's go I have not one clue. I stumbled across Exile's Honor because I liked the cover. :-} Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated because I would hate to go back to being a couch potato. :)

Tamora Pierce writes several excellent fantasy series that remind a bit of the Valdemar Series. She writes for young adults so the stories do not have great depth but they are still a really good read. I like the Protector of the small series and the Cirlce Opens series and Circle of Magic series.

I do not know what all you had in your list. Did it include Sacred Ground by Mercedes Lackey?

I agree with HBee; Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors. You should also try some of Mercedes Lackey's other books. I have heard that the bard books are good, but I haven't read any. I enjoy her The Elemental Masters/Edwardian Fairy Tales (they are categorized under both names) books and I have read the first 500 Kingdoms book, "Fairy Godmother". Umm...you might also want to try Charles de Lint; I sugest "Onion Girl", "Forest of the Heart", and "Little (GRRL) Lost". I think this is a good start. If you want some more authors, just leave me a note and I can think of some more. Also, if you have some nice librarians at your local library, you could try asking them.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I had picked up a book by Gayle Greeno called "The Ghatti's Tale, Book One: Finders-Seekers". The "Companions" are cats, it was a little slow at first but it wasn't bad by the end. I think I am going to try those for a little while. :)

ANYTHING by Mercedes Lackey is good. But if you've just started reading her stuff, I know you can't have read everything she's written. She's got over a hundred books out by different publishers, and each series is very different from the others. The Valdemar series is usually the one people pick up first, and it's my favorite. The 500 Kingdoms books are basically fairy-tale retellings with an adult audience in mind. The Elemental Masters series is based in our world at the turn of the century, and the magic involves the elements--people use magic by working with or controlling elemental creatures like salamanders, air sprites, earth gnomes, etc. The Bardic Voices series is more traditional fantasy I think, but I can't find the first book, so I haven't read them yet. She also has a really weird series called Serrated Edge which combines elves and fast cars, and it's set in our modern world. I haven't tried those, either. She's co-writing a great series with James Mallory that's already been mentioned, and I loved those.

For something good that's not Mercedes Lackey, one of my other favorite series is the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. It's similar to Valdemar in that people have a life-long psychic bond with another creature. In this case, they're dragons. They're really good, and if you would like to try those, start with Dragonflight.

I loved the Ghatti books. I read them and wished for more, more, more.
