Molecular Anthropology is the science that uses the methods of modern molecular genetics to investigate questions that anthropologists are interested in concerning the origin, relationships, history, structure and migration patterns of human populations. Depending on the question, molecular anthropologists analyze variation in mitochondrial DNA, Y-chromosome DNA and/or autosomal DNA in either contemporary populations or ancient specimens.
