I am author whose WIP is a historical fiction. It's my first, but each of my 4 novels has elements of historical fiction.

I am a Boston area writer, photographer and teacher, whose work has been published in many newspapers and magazines. My short stories have been printed in Poetica Magazine, Living Text, Red Wheelbarrow, Wild Violet, IdioM, Perspectives Magazine, Lichora and All the Women Followed Her. Currently I’m working on an historical novel.

      Hi, Susan,
I lived and raised my children (they're all nearing their 40's now and have children!) in Wellesley. Sounds like you're quite a prolific author. Where in Boston do you live? What's your major interest in historical fiction? I'm new to the group, as well. I'm a blogger/reviewer.

Hi, I'm new to the group. I'm a blogger who has been reading and reviewing more historical fiction in the past 6 months than in recent years. I've always loved history, but have only recently decided this is a genre to give more attention! My most recent read is "The Needle in the Blood" by Sarah Bower. It's a wonderful book which involves the creation of the Bayeux Tapestry, the needlewomen who worked on the piece, the Earl/Priest who conceived of the idea, his brother William the Conqueror, and a passionate love story. Beautifully written book on the order of the best in historical fiction sagas. You can read my review here or on my blog at: http://abookishlibraria.blogspot.com. I live in Naples, FL. I've been a fine needle woman for the best of 30 years, so this book was a great find for me in that respect, as well !
I'm delighted to be a part of this group!

      Welcome Deborah.
I used to do needle work for years, but my hands have lost feeling in the fingers and I can't grasp a needle, rather aggravating!
I went to Amazon for the book, because it seems right up my alley, but the price for the Kindle edition is too much, more than $10!! That's ridiculus! I don't believe that bs about Amazon saying the publishers set the price, Amazon just wants more. Some of the problem is California has decided that anyone buying on Amazon has to pay state sales tax. Amazon is fighting back, and I think is one of the ways! They want us to buy more "real" books!!

Of course - I was trying to find a handy name out of this and one has not happened for me yet - ill work on that
The word means winding curves or a dark green mineral that is mottled or can mean a canyon or a cannon or ancient word for billiards or even a dragon. I was leaning toward a word for green. Jade would work. When I looked up all the meanings for jade

I am Winter- I got written into a corner concerning the usage of red shoes for magic vs. the Wicked witch and so I wrote my way out, but it required a shoe change with unlimited magic and red shoes as a name is only good for one type of picture. So I let it all go. Made up new. But it's not a gook nickname word, serp, pen, tine, jade. What have you got to add to the list?

how did you choose yours? Remember, I've complained many times that i have a shriveled prune hanging on the right side of the corpus collasum in my skull. The left side is rich, pink and very wrinkled but nothin' going on in the I M A G I N A T I O N centers. Should I pick a favorite book, favorite era, favorite character?

Well you don't necessarily need to pick books. I have a pair of shoes. Others chose their cats. Wendy would work if you don't want to change your name but start using pictures from Peter Pan. Before this I used pictures I had taken of Monet etc in museums, but pick something that will allow you to change the picture again when you are bored. So what kind of words do you like. Think about that. Favorite words. I need to sleep…

Hi ... don't know why I haven't joined this group before. I know many of you from other Shelfari groups.

I enjoy a well-written work of historical fiction, whether it's intended to explore an historical event (e.g. Gone With the Wind) or just set in an historical time period but focusing on a universal theme or personal interaction that could occur anywhere, any place (e.g. The Diary of Mattie Spenser).

Okay ... I'll spend some time perusing the old threads to get a better feel for the group before I do a lot of posting.

I'm a new member and author of "The Day to Eternity," a novel that takes place during the Korean War. I love historical fiction because it transports you to different times and places. If the author is true to the facts, it also educates the reader and gives him a new perspective as to that time in history. I'm looking forward to becoming a part of the discussions.

Hi! I am brand new to Shelfari. I came here because I found my just-published dark historical novel, Plaguewalker, had been automatically added to the database. Now that I'm here I think I'll stick around. Lots of good discussions and great suggestions for future reads (as if I don't have enough books piled up and waiting for me as it is!)

A little bit about me: I live in Antarctica (no, really) and pay the bills switching between freelance journalism, cooking and baking. Plaguewalker is my first novel but I have two more completed and in the publishing pipeline (they are both fantasy novels). When I'm not reading, writing or working, I'm most likely hiking. But not right now, because as I type this it's minus 45F out there and pitch black. Good weather to hang out online :-)

This time around I'm just here for eight months. I work as a cook in the galley. It's a fantastic place, especially for inspiration. A friend of mine who is a third grade teacher asked me if I would answer questions from her class... I did on a special page for them on my travel blog. Another friend saw it and told me it was a great primer on Antarctica. Feel free to check it out (link below), and thanks again for the warm welcome... I'll take anything "warm" that I can get!!

Hello, I'm new to Shelfari, and love to read historical fiction. I'm also a writer; my new novel, Scent of Triumph, is also historical fiction--it's about a female French perfumer during World War II. I enjoy the research involved in historical fiction--it's great to be entertained, but it's also enlightening. Look forward to connecting!

I'm a history geek. I've always loved reading nonfiction history books. In fiction I ready mostly fantasy, and I'm really excited at the recent boom in books with fantasy elements in historical settings.

Not too long ago I read Twelve, the first book in Jasper Kent's Danilov Quintet. It's a vampire novel set in Russia during Napoleon's 1812-1813 campaign. His plan is to carry it all the way through to 1917 and the Bolshevik Revolution.

There's also Jon Courteney Grimwood's Blade trilogy, set in Renaissance Venice.

Also, Thieftaker is coming out soon from D.B. Jackson. It's set in 1700s Boston and is being billed as "historical urban fantasy".

Hi Matthew - I too am a long time fantasy reader and enjoy the recent trend of mixing fantasy into historical settings - or even steampunk books. I have Twelve and the second in the series, Thirteen Years Later but haven't gotten around to reading them yet. I think partly because I've become spoiled by reading books on my Kindle and just looking at the sizes of those 2 makes me hesitate to pick them up - at least on the Kindle you can't tell how big a book it is -- or how heavy :)

I'll have to check out the others you mentioned because I also love 'urban fantasy'.

I enjoyed The Historian however, I thought it was a book in serious need for editing. After reading it, I listened to an abridged audiobook and found it better and more coherent than the book.

Twelve was pretty good. Eastern European history is my favorite area, so I loved the descriptions of Moscow during the very brief French occupation. I think I read the first half of it in two or three hours and finished the rest of it a few days later.

hi all - and thanks for the 'welcomes'
I'm not sure that I know the true description of 'steampunk' but I believe the basis is that they take place in Victorian England, but it's more an 'alternate' Victorian England with things that wouldn't be found in the real time. Lots of fanciful machines-- dirragbles and elevators and things you wouldn't necessarily find even in our time. A popular series at the moment is THE PARASOL PROTECTORATE by Gail Carriger. The first book is SOULLESS. These were my first introduction to Steampunk, and while they may be a bit lighter than some others, I really enjoyed them. I have other different types of books that I haven't gotten to yet.
Search for 'steampunk fiction' on Amazon and see what comes up

Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy. Generally, they are alternative histories set in times when steam would have been the primary source of power. The machines would be similar to the ones used by H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. Catwoman is correct in that Gail Carriger's series are a good example. I have read the first two, which contain unusual machines and paranormal elements such as ghosts, vampires and werewolves. Another one I have read recently, which I believe fit in this subgenre is The Map of Time by Felix J. Palma.

Hello, all. My sister recommended this group & I haven't been disappointed yet! I am a wife & mother, a teacher, a director/choreographer of chikdren's theater, and an AVID reader. I seem to lead towards fantasy & sci-fi, but love anything that is a good read. I also read a ton of children's/young adult lit, especially YA historical fiction! I read the physical books so I can add them to my classroom library for students to borrow. Right now I have over 850 books in there! I also use historical fiction to teach American history. I am looking forward to many discussions & making many book-loving friends!

Hello, I'm Laura. I've been in love with the past for as long as I can remember (or perhaps since I began to read Laura Ingalls Wilder... I don't know, but that's beside the point) and nothing pleases me more than a good dose of historical fiction. Currently I'm reading Pride and Prejudice, which has been on my reading list forever (or perhaps since I first saw the TV series... Again, irrelevant).

Evelyn ... just keep trying and eventually you'll "find" the book through the search. For example a few days ago I tried:
A Happy Marriage - No results
A Happy Marriage (with an extra space at the end) - No results
      Happy Marriage - No results
      Rafael Yglesias - No results
Rafael Yglesias (with an extra space at the end) - No results
Yglesias, Rafael - BINGO (and then I had to scroll down to find the particular book)

Sometimes you just have to give up for a few hours and come back to it later and VOILA, the search works perfectly.

      It's very frustrating.

My name is Melissa, and much like everyone else, I love historical fiction! I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada. I absolutely love the Tudor era, and a lot of book I have are a reflection of that. Phillippa Gregory is definitely my favorite author, and I've just recently begun the Cousin's War series which I hope will allow me to branch out into other areas of historical fiction! I'm finished school for the time being and feel less guilty in reading my books now so I'll be getting a lot done :)

Welcome to the group. I'm fairly new here too. You review books? Wonderful! Please give this one a look:

A Pledge of Silence is a historical novel based on the experiences of the nurses who served in the Philippines during World War II and became the first U.S. military women to be taken prisoners-of-war by a foreign enemy. It's a fascinating story and is getting good reviews. The e-book is currently on Amazon. The paperback will be available soon. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Folks,
Wonderful to find a site for people interested in history and historical literature. I am from the UK and was grew up in an area rich in the past. I was born on the slopes of an Iron Age hill fort, Ham Hill. I grew up in a village not two miles from there where in 1034 a mysterious flint cross was found on the hill that overlooks the village. It was discovered by the village blacksmith who gave it to the Lord of the manor, one Tovi the Proud the standard bearer for King Canute. He dedicated it to a church he owned where later on it came into the possession of ill fated Harold II. When the English army at the Battle of Hastings found themselves under the threat of ex-communication by the Pope it was this cross they called on and the battle cry was Halig Rood, Halig Rood.

In 1069 the hill on which the cross was found became the scene of the last major resistance to the Norman invaders . The English attempt to storm the castle the Normans built on that hill failed and they were massacred by Norman troops drawn from all points of the compass by the bloody, mutilating, Bishop of Coutances. Most of the English of the area were buried in a mass grave under Ham Hill.

No wonder I am obsessed with the history of the west country of England and have focused my books on speculating on the origin of this cross of ill omen. I say that because if it had never been dug up the hill would not have become a shrine and the English would not have been so offended by the building of the castle that they rebelled and the massacre would not have happened. As a totem it didn't do well at Hastings either.

This is History and well documented. I have turned it into literature in my books. You will find mention of them in the appropriate thread.

      Hi James,

I'd be obsessed also. I've got ancestors from Shouthwest Scotland and in the Penine mountains. Did I spell that right?

Also, did I see you on some of the posts at Goodreads?

I hail from Texas and have ancestors here since Texas was a nation on its own. Like you the history around me seep directly into my books and articles.

      Welcome.

Southwest Scotland has a very interesting history. Just to the south of it is Cumbria and the similarity of that with Cymru, Wales in Welsh, pronounced Cumree reveals this as an outpost of old Britannia. North of Cumbria, and part of it, is Galloway. At one time the combined Cumbria and Galloway stretched from Loch Lomond to north Yorkshire. Along the coast were the descendants of Norwegian Vikings who mixed with the folk of Galloway and became known as Gallwegians.

The pennines formed a barrier between these folk to the west of them living on difficult agricultural country and the English to the east of the Pennines in the relatively rich flat plains of Durham, Tyne and Tees. There were access ways from east to west which had to be defended to stop the Cumbrians from constant invasions.

I honeymooned many years ago in a fishing cottage about 6 miles from Robbie Burn's Dumfries in the grounds of Caerlaverock Castle, still a substantial ruin. It is only recently that I discovered that it had been besieged by and fell to Harold, then Earl of Wessex before he became the ill fated last English king Harold II. I wish I had known it at the time.

Yes I used to be very active on Goodreads, I still am on some threads but others I no longer engage with others for reasons I wont bore you with.

Greetings! I am glad to be part of this group. I am a retired high school teacher/guidance counselor, and grateful to finally have time to read what I want!

I have an old Kindle, but read mostly on my ipad because I read a lot at night. I still buy books, whatever is cheapest! I use libraries when I can. Love almost all kinds of genre, depending on topic and my mood. I like the quick, well done mystery or novel (search The Strand and Bookmarks regularly), but like to learn something now and then, so I switch up to historical or historical fiction from foreign authors. I was in science, so I like scifi and fantasy if it is well done. Love "Brit Lit", all genre!

Magical Realism is my girly downfall (House of Spirits, Love in the Time of Colera, Like Water for Chocolate), never read a "I was a Shopoholic" or "Shades of Grey" book...maybe my age, maybe my sensibilities. I like the occasional classic. The writing is often so beautiful, Wallace Stegner comes to mind. Dickens always delights, and Poe was the author that got me into reading! I remember asking someone what the word "grotesque" meant, and was forever amazed at what a grotesque word "grotesque" was, it even looked grotesque!!

I also read travel books, snarky Threroux, VS Napal, Iyre, Dinsen and women explorers, and Bryson etc....especially drawn to nautical voyages (sneak in a Aubry/Maturin sometimes!).

Hi! I just joined Shelfari today and am still learning the site. Clicked on the join groups link and here I am :D Historical fiction is my favorite genre but I'll read most anything as long as it's not too scary such as horror.

I was born in Washington state and my family moved to Southern Calif in 1958 when I was 9. Mom & Dad took us to the public library every Saturday and we would check out as many books as we could carry. My hubby isn't much of a reader unless it's the newspaper, Runner's World, or National Geographic; but he does support me in my reading hobby. He surprised me with a Kindle for Christmas 2011 and I love it! Still read books from the library on a regular basis.

My favorite authors are Diana Gabaldon, Bernard Cornwell (I've read most of his Sharpe series), Alexander McCall Smith, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens. I also enjoy historical mysteries and cozy mysteries.

    Hi

I am based in Auckland New Zealand. I have taken to reading historical fiction in the last year or two, and also enjoy quite a few classics - mainly 19th century (so have joined the classics group too). Also I am on to my second book that is about forecasting the long term future, which I guess is the opposite of historical fiction but interesting all the same.

Much of my 'reading' is done in the car to and from work via audiobook. Currently I am about 55 chapters into Shogun, and wishing my commute was a bit longer. It is got me thinking I should read a book or two about (pre-communist) China or Vietnam, so any suggestions are welcome.

I have also read a few Bernard Cornwell books. Really liked Azincourt, and not long ago finished the first in the series about King Arthur. I'm not such a fan of series of books, although it was enjoyable so I might persist with this one unless it becomes a chore.

I look forward to hearing what interesting reads everyone else has discovered.

Welcome aboard from Augusta, Ga. in the USA. I'm not sure if you are referring to the years immediately preceding Communist China or any book before Communist China. If it is any, i would recommend Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. A good book even though I was a bit squeamish about the description of foot-binding.

Welcome, Nigel! I really liked Azincourt by Bernard Cornwell. Read "Shogun" years ago and thought it was fascinating although with the passage of so many years I don't remember much of the storyline. "Daughter of the Bamboo Forest" by Sheng-Shih Lin is on my TBR list. It's set in post-revolutionary China during the 1940's.

edited to correct the above date from 1040 to 1940!
