Discussing Reality

This group will be to discuss books that deal with different aspects of reality, mainly from the viewpoint of science, but with overlap into history, philosophy and spirituality. The Category structure here doesn't really have a single place for a group like this. One of the things to explore is consensus reality - the view of the universe we...more »

    Is the Singularity Near?

According to the book, The Singularity is Near, if the growth of knowledge and technology continues its current exponential pace, especially along the lines of genetics, artificial intelligence, and biology, we will be transcending biological form within the next 20 years. That we will have created machine intelligence of the same level as our own, and nano-technology capable of totally repairing all physical ills including aging. We will not even be the same creature we now are. Let's explore that.

I am not sure whether this is relevant to the discussion but as far as I know the problem of the possibility of creating machines or better to say algorithmic machines being capable of thinking ,having consciousness(in rough terms) and posing nontrivial and genuine problems is a highly controversial issue. Some great scientists and philosophers including Roger Penrose believe and even making use of the celebrated Gödel’s theorem demonstrate that constructing such machines would lead to logical inconsistencies and in fact human brain obeys some non-algorithmic rules yet unknown however there are clues that these rules must be quantum mechanical in essence. All in all Penrose believes that some revolutionary change in our present physical theories should be made to make them viable for explaining issues like consciousness, thinking and life in general.
Regarding nanotechnology and genetics I can’t even imagine how far and deep the consequences will be. No terminology is more appropriate than the title of the book you have introduced: Singularity!
