Founded in 1934, the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering was among the four departments of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Tehran. The department was then divided into Mining Engineering and Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Schools. Now, this school with an area of 17,800 m2 and 26 research and educational laboratories, a computer center, and a separate library, is known as one of the largest schools of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering in the Middle East. It is also reputable at the international level for the Center of Excellence in Processing and Characterization of High Performance Materials, advanced equipments, skillful faculty members, and numerous research projects related to the development of advanced materials.
For the last 68 years, the School of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering has trained qualified engineers many of whom have had distinguished careers in different areas of activities, nationally and internationally. Currently, about 400 undergraduate and 280 graduate students are studying in this school. The school has 28 academic members including 4 Professors, 15 Associate and 8 Assistant Professors and 1 Lecturer. They are involved in teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses as well as in research work.
The undergraduate program offered in this school is general materials engineering. The master and Ph.D. programs are also offered in the following fields:
Materials selection and characterization,
Metal forming,
Casting,
Extractive metallurgy,
Metal corrosion,
Metal Welding,
Nanotechnology (only Ph.D.).
Since its inception, the School has established a close and growing connection with industrial, research and educational centers and organizations. For example, Ministries of Industries, Mines and Metals, Energy, Petroleum, Defense, and Roads and Transportation, and also National Steel Company have had continuous educational and research cooperation with this school.
